Local imaging of diamagnetism in proximity-coupled niobium nanoisland arrays on gold thin films.

In this work, we study the effect of engineered disorder on the local magnetic response of proximity-coupled superconducting island arrays by comparing scanning superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) susceptibility measurements to a model in which we treat the system as a network of one-dimensional (1D) superconductor-normal-metal-superconductor Josephson junctions, each with a Josephson coupling energy E-J determined by the junction length or distance between islands. We find that the disordered arrays exhibit a spatially inhomogeneous diamagnetic response which, for low local applied magnetic fields, is well described by this junction network model, and we discuss these results as they relate to inhomogeneous 2D superconductors. Our model of the static magnetic response of the arrays does not fully capture the onset of nonlinearity and dissipation with increasing applied field, as these effects are associated with vortex motion due to the dynamic nature of the scanning SQUID susceptometry measurement. This work demonstrates a model 2D superconducting system with engineered disorder, and it highlights the impact of dissipation on the local magnetic properties of 2D superconductors and Josephson junction arrays.

Nanomagnet shape effects on magnetic reversal in artificial spin ice

We use micromagnetic simulations to study the influence of the shape of elongated nanomagnets that vary from rectangular to elliptical shapes in an artificial spin ice array. For weakly interacting ellipselike islands, the magnetic hysteresis loops align with the Stoner-Wohlfarth model, demonstrating nearly uniform magnetization at remanence and nearly coherent rotation. As expected, nonelliptical weakly interacting islands show deviations from the model due to the curling and pinning of the magnetization at the island edge. We find that increasing interisland coupling leads to an increasingly complex magnetic reversal process due to an interplay between internal and external degrees of freedom as the shape of the islands varies. Furthermore, our results open a roadmap for tailoring systems with desired magnetic properties by choosing the appropriate nanomagnet shape.

Neoclassical Tearing Mode Seeding by Nonlinear Three-Wave Interactions in Tokamaks

We report the experimental observation of seed magnetic island formation by nonlinear three-wave coupling of magnetic island triplets. In this experiment, disruptive 2,1 islands are seeded by the coupling of 4,3 and 3,2 tearing modes to a central 1,1 sawtooth precursor. Three-wave interactions between these modes are conclusively identified by bispectral analysis, indicating fixed phase relationships in agreement with theory. Furthermore, this new observation of this seeding mechanism has important implications for future reactors that must operate in stable plasma equilibria, free of disruptive 2,1 islands.

Design Power Control Strategies of Grid-Forming Inverters for Microgrid Application

This paper develops and compares two control schemes in the application control layer of a non-phase-locked loop (non-PLL) grid-forming (GFM) inverter to gain insight and understanding into how the two schemes affect the dynamic responses of GFM inverters and the transition operation of microgrids. The first scheme adopts power tracking based on an outer current loop in grid-connected mode and droop control in islanded mode, and the second uses droop control in both grid-connected and islanded modes. Analytical study is developed to compare the performance of these two strategies from various aspects, including fundamental differences, transition operation, power tracking, and P-Q capability with low point-of-common-coupling (PCC) voltages. Extensive simulation testing is carried out to validate the control performance of these two control strategies, and the simulation testing confirms the findings of the analytic study. Finally, the second strategy is recommended because of its superior control performance and ease of implementation. The analysis and results are useful in developing reliable control schemes for non-PLL GFM inverters because increasing numbers of inverters will work as non-PLL grid-forming sources in future grids because of their improved stability and reliability.

Development of a Power Electronics-based Testbed for a Flexible Combined Heat and Power System

A flexible combined heat and power (F-CHP) concept, enabled by a power electronics-based power conditioning system (PCS), has been recently proposed as a cost-effective way for supporting the grid with high penetration of renewable energy sources. To verify the design, control, and performance of the overall system, a laboratory-scale testbed is essential. This paper focuses on the development of a power electronics-based testbed for such a F-CHP system. The developed testbed can test the control, grid-connected mode operation, islanded mode operation, and mode transitions, including planned/unplanned islanding and reconnection, of the F-CHP system. In the grid-connected mode, both the steady state and transients of the ac grid can be emulated, and various grid support functions can be tested with the help of the developed PCS converter. In the islanded mode, the external ac loads can also be supported by the F-CHP system. Also, the central controller, which is implemented in a NI CompactRIO, can be tested. Experimental test results for the grid-connected mode, islanded mode, and mode transitions are provided to validate the testbed design.

Grid Forming Inverter With Increased Short-Circuit Contribution to Address Inverter-Based Microgrid Protection Challenges

Substantial differences in fault levels between grid-tied and islanded modes is one of the primary challenges of microgrid protection. During grid-tied mode, the bulk grid provides significant short-circuit, while during islanded operation the short-circuit magnitude is small due to inverter-based resources limiting their current output close to nominal ratings. Consequently, conventional distribution protection strategies based on overcurrent cannot reliably protect microgrids when operating in islanded mode. Fuses and circuit breakers are particularly affected because of their inverse characteristics. Presently, the absence of affordable solutions for protecting microgrids in islanded mode leads to microgrids shutting down during electrical faults. The contribution of this article is two-fold. The first innovation proposes specific hardware modifications to grid-forming inverters to increase their short-circuit current during electrical faults. The second innovation introduces a novel control strategy designed to preserve control stability margins even when the grid-filter saturates, ensuring sinusoidal output currents under normal and fault conditions. Through experimental results, the inverter with the proposed modifications can provide more than three-times its nominal current during electrical faults. For the prototype testbed, this was sufficient to enable the use of traditional legacy overcurrent protection, achieving the fuse-to-relay and relay-to-relay minimum coordination time for the line-to-ground, line-to-line to ground, and three-phase electrical faults.

Design of a Non-PLL Grid-Forming Inverter for Smooth Microgrid Transition Operation

This paper develops a controller for a grid-forming (GFM) inverter that is capable of operating as either a GFM or grid-feeding source that can improve the operation of a microgrid during on-off grid transitions through use of a novel synchronization approach. Furthermore, this controller avoids use of a phase-locked loop (PLL) and the inverter is able to synchronize with the grid with self-generated voltage and frequency. This prevents the inverter from replicating any grid voltage disturbances in its output—a key disadvantage of many grid-connected inverters that use a PLL. To enable fast synchronization, active synchronization control is adopted both during inverter start-up and microgrid reconnection operation and a method of coordinating synchronization of the inverter with a microgrid controller and grid interconnection circuit breaker is presented. Simulation results for multiple microgrid transition operations and unplanned islanding events demonstrate that the developed non-PLL grid-connected GFM inverter controller and synchronization method are effective in synchronizing the inverter and microgrid to the grid, avoiding phase jump during microgrid transition operation, and improving microgrid islanding transients versus a traditional configuration.

A Fast and Scalable Genetic Algorithm-Based Approach for Planning of Microgrids in Distribution Networks

As a result of climate change, extreme weather events are occurring more frequently and with increasing impact. This trend poses a significant challenge for distribution utilities and system operators to ensure that there is uninterrupted power supply to critical loads in their networks; thus, the level of proactive preparation of the distribution system to be able to handle severe impacts of extreme weather events represents the system's resilience. One method that distribution system planners can use to prepare for future extreme events is to plan multiple microgrids which can use local generation as much as possible to supply critical loads. But partitioning an existing distribution system such that multiple feasible islands are planned and which are capable of supporting critical loads is still challenging for distribution systems - first, because of the size of the network graph partitioning problem and, second, because of the difficulty in properly formulating the desired attributes of such islands or microgrids. Therefore, this paper presents a genetic algorithm based approach that facilitates incorporating multiple objectives for grid partitioning by formulating two types of problems - node allocation and edge elimination - and it considers multiple topological and resilience-enhancing objectives. The performance of the proposed genetic algorithm-based approach is numerically evaluated on multiple test systems as well as on a real distribution feeder in Colorado, United States.

Exploration for Blind Geothermal Resources in the State of Hawaii Utilizing Dissolved Noble Gasses in Well Waters

This study is an extension of the Hawaii Play Fairway Analysis (PFA), a statewide geothermal exploration project funded by the United States Department of Energy. Based on results from prior phases of the PFA, this project targeted 66 wells on the islands of Hawaii, Maui, Lanai, Oahu, and Kauai for sampling of dissolved noble gases, trace metals, common ions, and the stable isotopes 2H and 18O. Ultimately, 23 of the 66 well targets were sampled. The noble gas helium is used as an indicator of geothermal heat when excess 3He and/or 4He is present when compared to the atmospheric ratio of those isotopes (R/Ra). R/Ra is minimally affected by dilution and transport, allowing even those wells not perfectly situated over a geothermal system to indicate a geothermal anomaly. R/Ra anomalies are present on every island in this study. There is a strong correlation between R/Ra anomalies and proximity to rift zones and calderas. Across the islands R/Ra ranged from 15-16 on Kilauea's lower east rift zone, which is a mantle plume value, to 0.37 on Lanai, which is a crustal value. The majority of anomalous well samples had R/Ra values consistent with an upper mantle source. Mixing between upper mantle and crustal helium is evident on all islands. Geographically, R/Ra decreases from the high at Kilauea to upper mantle values at Mauna Loa, and remains at upper mantle values for all wells across the other volcanoes, with the exception of two of four sampled wells on Lanai.
