Nonlinear viscoelastic characterization of thin polyethylene film

In order to understand the state of stress and strain in a typical balloon fabricated from thin polyethylene film, experiment data in the literature reviewed. It was determined that the film behaves as a nonlinear viscoelasticity material and should be characterized accordingly. A simple uniaxial, nonlinear viscoelastic model was developed for predicting stress given a certain strain history. The simple model showed good qualitative agreement with results of constant rate, uniaxial accurately predicting stresses for cyclic strain histories typical of balloon flights. A program was outlined which will result in the development of a more complex nonlinear viscoelastic model.

Finite-element analysis of nonlinear conduction problems subject to moving fields

Through the use of a space-time warp, specialized moving finite elements are developed that can be employed to generate a nonlinear heat conduction model for situations involving traveling boundary and heat generation fields superposed on an initial state. To facilitate the solution of the resulting nonlinear finite-element formulation, a multilevel heuristic iterative solution strategy is developed. In order to demonstrate the versatility and accuracy of the moving elements and their associated nonlinear solution strategy, the results of several numerical experiments are presented.

A modified Barrett-Lampard expansion and its application to bandpass nonlinearities with both AM-AM and AM-PM conversion

A two-dimensional Barrett-Lampard expansion is developed to handle two-dimensional nonlinear systems with random Gaussian inputs. The theory is applied to the problem of evaluating the mean signal and the inphase and quadrature noise correlation functions at the output of a TWT nonlinearity exhibiting arbitrary AM-AM and AM-PM characteristics, when the input consists of a narrow-band signal and Gaussian noise. As a specialized application, the classical problem of determining the coherent and incoherent noise correlation functions at the output of a power-law bandpass nonlinearity is also considered. The results are of interest in assessing the performance of coherent satellite communication channels. The theory developed is accompanied by numerical examples of practical interest.

A nonlinear, discrete-vortex-perturbation method for unsteady lifting-surface problems with edge separations

The nonlinear-discrete vortex method is coupled with a perturbation method to solve the problem of a rectangular wing with small oscillation about high angles of attack. The solution of the problem is based on decoupling the steady and unsteady effects. The steady part of the problem is a nonlinear one and is solved by the nonlinear-discrete vortex method. The unsteady part of the problem is a linear one and is solved directly without any iteration. So far, the developed method is restricted to flat rectangular surfaces with pitching oscillations. Total and distributed loads of several rectangular wings are presented as numerical results.

On numerical nonlinear analysis of highly flexible spinning cantilevers

The general nonlinear discretized equations of motion of spinning elastic solids and structures are derived as a set of nonlinear ordinary differential equations for the case when the strain-displacement and velocity-displacement relations are nonlinear up to the second order. It is shown that the cost of generation of such equations is proportional to the fourth power of the number of degrees of freedom. A computer program is written to automatically generate the equations for the case of spinning cantilevers with initial imperfections. The types and the number of the coordinate functions used in the trial solution are parameters of the program.

Computerized symbolic manipulation in nonlinear finite element analysis

The potential of using computerized symbolic manipulation in the development of nonlinear finite elements is discussed. Three tasks which can be efficiently performed using computerized symbolic manipulation are identified: (1) generation of algebraic expressions for the stiffness coefficients of nonlinear finite elements, (2) generation of FORTRAN source code for numerical evaluation of stiffness coefficients, and (3) checking the correctness of the FORTRAN statements for the arrays of coefficients. The symbolic and algebraic manipulation system MACSYMA is used in the present study. Two sample MACSYMA programs are presented for the development of the nonlinear stiffness coefficients of two-dimensional, shear-flexible, doubly-curved deep shell elements. The first program is for displacement models and the second program is for mixed models with discontinuous stress-resultant fields at interelement boundaries.

The nonlinear modified equation approach to analyzing finite difference schemes

The nonlinear modified equation approach is taken in this paper to analyze the generalized Lax-Wendroff explicit scheme approximation to the unsteady one- and two-dimensional equations of gas dynamics. Three important applications of the method are demonstrated. The nonlinear modified equation analysis is used to (1) generate higher order accurate schemes, (2) obtain more accurate estimates of the discretization error for nonlinear systems of partial differential equations, and (3) generate an adaptive mesh procedure for the unsteady gas dynamic equations. Results are obtained for all three areas. For the adaptive mesh procedure, mesh point requirements for equal resolution of discontinuities were reduced by a factor of five for a 1-D shock tube problem solved by the explicit MacCormack scheme.

Application of the concept of dynamic trim control and nonlinear system inverses to automatic control of a vertical attitude takeoff and landing aircraft

A full envelope automatic flight control system based on nonlinear inverse systems concepts has been applied to a vertical attitude takeoff and landing (VATOL) fighter aircraft. A new method for using an airborne digital aircraft model to perform the inversion of a nonlinear aircraft model is presented together with the results of a simulation study of the nonlinear inverse system concept for the vertical-attitude hover mode. The system response to maneuver commands in the vertical attitude was found to be excellent; and recovery from large initial offsets and large disturbances was found to be very satisfactory.

The power spectral density of digital modulations transmitted over nonlinear channels

This paper examines by analytical methods the power spectral densities of digital modulations (in particular, staggered and unstaggered quadrature modulations) passed through band-limited nonlinear channels. Previously observed (by computer simulation or hardware measurement) behavior of such spectra with regard to the suppression or restoration of its sidelobes after passing through the nonlinearity is verified analytically. Several examples corresponding to specific quadrature modulations and filter-nonlinearity combinations are presented as illustrations of the general results.

Analytical simulation of nonlinear satellite links

It is noted that performance predictions for nonlinear digital satellite channels are usually obtained by either purely analytical methods or Monte Carlo simulations. When used with other than very simple channel models, however, they become extremely costly. It is shown that, through analytical modeling of the effect of the nonlinearity on the uplink waveform, it is possible to obtain approximate performance predictions with a minimum of computer time. It is also demonstrated that the results agree quite well with Monte Carlo simulations and that significant trade-offs can be performed with this tool. An analytical simulation based on Blachman's (1968) definition of signal x signal, signal x noise, and noise x noise terms is shown to provide the required flexibility for modeling the effect of signal distortions on the link performance and to produce good results over a wide range of nonlinearities and channel conditions.

Nonlinear analysis of rotor-bearing systems using component mode synthesis

The method of component mode synthesis is developed to determine the forced response of nonlinear, multishaft, rotor-bearing systems. The formulation allows for simulation of system response due to blade loss, distributed unbalance, base shock, maneuver loads, and specified fixed frame forces. The motion of each rotating component of the system is described by superposing constraint modes associated with boundary coordinates and constrained precessional modes associated with internal coordinates. The precessional modes are truncated for each component and the reduced component equations are assembled with the nonlinear supports and interconnections to form a set of nonlinear system equations of reduced order. These equations are then numerically integrated to obtain the system response. A computer program, which is presently restricted to single shaft systems, has been written and results are presented for transient system response associated with blade loss dynamics with squeeze film dampers, and with interference rubs.

Nonlinear Marangoni convection in bounded layers. I - Circular cylindrical containers. II - Rectangular cylindrical containers

Liquid undergoing nonlinear Marangoni instability in a circular cylinder is examined, with attention given to roll-cell development and interaction. Surface deflections are neglected and the side walls are considered as adiabatic and impenetrable, allowing the liquid to freely slip. The nonlinear convective states are calculated and their stability is defined. The behavior and amplitude of cells forming in the liquid, heated from below, are modeled in order to derive all the transport properties. A new small parameter is formulated which is related to the critical Marangoni number of the infinite matrix expressing the eigenvalue expansion of the problem. The observed roll cell amplitudes and transport properties are shown to be available from simple eigenvalues, with double eigenvalues, indicating the existence of two roll-states as predicted by linear theory, nonlinear theory indicates transitions from one steady convective state to another.

Self-adaptive closed constrained solution algorithms for nonlinear conduction

Self-adaptive solution algorithms are developed for nonlinear heat conduction problems encountered in analyzing materials for use in high temperature or cryogenic conditions. The nonlinear effects are noted to occur due to convection and radiation effects, as well as temperature-dependent properties of the materials. Incremental successive substitution (ISS) and Newton-Raphson (NR) procedures are treated as extrapolation schemes which have solution projections bounded by a hyperline with an externally applied thermal load vector arising from internal heat generation and boundary conditions. Closed constraints are formulated which improve the efficiency and stability of the procedures by employing closed ellipsoidal surfaces to control the size of successive iterations. Governing equations are defined for nonlinear finite element models, and comparisons are made of results using the the new method and the ISS and NR schemes for epoxy, PVC, and CuGe.

Geometrically nonlinear analysis of adhesively bonded joints

A geometrically nonlinear finite element analysis of cohesive failure in typical joints is presented. Cracked-lap-shear joints were chosen for analysis. Results obtained from linear and nonlinear analysis show that nonlinear effects, due to large rotations, significantly affect the calculated mode 1, crack opening, and mode 2, inplane shear, strain-energy-release rates. The ratio of the mode 1 to mode 2 strain-energy-relase rates (G1/G2) was found to be strongly affected by he adhesive modulus and the adherend thickness. The ratios between 0.2 and 0.8 can be obtained by varying adherend thickness and using either a single or double cracked-lap-shear specimen configuration. Debond growth rate data, together with the analysis, indicate that mode 1 strain-energy-release rate governs debond growth. Results from the present analysis agree well with experimentally measured joint opening displacements.

Nonlinear and tangent stiffness of imperfect beam columns

A curved member under axial load is analyzed using beam column theory to determine nonlinear response and the tangent stiffness associated with small displacements from the nonlinear state. Such a result is suitable for incorporation into a general nonlinear analysis using a corotational coordinate system to describe the rigid body type motion of individual members. The method is applied to buckling problems. Several examples are given to show the accuracy of the method.

Guaranteed robustness properties of multivariable, nonlinear, stochastic optimal regulators

The robustness of optimal regulators for nonlinear, deterministic and stochastic, multi-input dynamical systems is studied under the assumption that all state variables can be measured. It is shown that, under mild assumptions, such nonlinear regulators have a guaranteed infinite gain margin; moreover, they have a guaranteed 50 percent gain reduction margin and a 60 degree phase margin, in each feedback channel, provided that the system is linear in the control and the penalty to the control is quadratic, thus extending the well-known properties of LQ regulators to nonlinear optimal designs. These results are also valid for infinite horizon, average cost, stochastic optimal control problems.

Linear approximations of nonlinear systems

The development of a method for designing an automatic flight controller for short and vertical take off aircraft is discussed. This technique involves transformations of nonlinear systems to controllable linear systems and takes into account the nonlinearities of the aircraft. In general, the transformations cannot always be given in closed form. Using partial differential equations, an approximate linear system called the modified tangent model was introduced. A linear transformation of this tangent model to Brunovsky canonical form can be constructed, and from this the linear part (about a state space point x sub 0) of an exact transformation for the nonlinear system can be found. It is shown that a canonical expansion in Lie brackets about the point x sub 0 yields the same modified tangent model.
