Shuttle Application for Rotary Recorders

From the Conclusion: The ATMOS Recorder Subsystem will be a great benefit to the ATMOS experiment. By maximizing the amount and quality of scientific data returned by ATMOS during an ATLAS mission, the entire Mission to Planet Earth scientific investigation of the earth's atmosphere benefits. A successful demonstration of the ARS will show that off-the-shelf military grade equipment can be flown in a shuttle environment without major modifications or a large development expenditure.

A 30+ Year AVHRR LAI and FAPAR Climate Data Record: Algorithm Description, Validation, and Case Study

In- land surface models, which are used to evaluate the role of vegetation in the context ofglobal climate change and variability, LAI and FAPAR play a key role, specifically with respect to thecarbon and water cycles. The AVHRR-based LAIFAPAR dataset offers daily temporal resolution,an improvement over previous products. This climate data record is based on a carefully calibratedand corrected land surface reflectance dataset to provide a high-quality, consistent time-series suitablefor climate studies. It spans from mid-1981 to the present. Further, this operational dataset is availablein near real-time allowing use for monitoring purposes. The algorithm relies on artificial neuralnetworks calibrated using the MODIS LAI/FAPAR dataset. Evaluation based on cross-comparisonwith MODIS products and in situ data show the dataset is consistent and reliable with overalluncertainties of 1.03 and 0.15 for LAI and FAPAR, respectively. However, a clear saturation effect isobserved in the broadleaf forest biomes with high LAI (greater than 4.5) and FAPAR (greater than 0.8) values.

Land Long Term Climate Data Record

AVHRR data record is well alive and continue to improve and be used by a large land user community. Most of the improvement are due to the overlapping with MODIS Aqua, Terra. We recommend operating missions as long as possible to enable overlap of at least a few years (especially for applications).

Exploration Electronic Health Record (xEHR) Techport Entry

Exploration missions beyond low Earth orbit will experience significant communication delays and communication black outs that will necessitate asynchronous, increasingly Earth-independent provision of medical care to onboard crew. In this new paradigm, the Crew Medical Officer (CMO), other Crewmembers, and ground support will have to quickly, efficiently, and independently, view medical data, make decisions, and relay important information. Currently, the NASA electronic health record (EHR) is intended only for ground use and is not accessible to in-mission ISS crew for medical decision support and communication. An EHR capable of providing the crew health data, medical store-and-forward communications, and necessary medical administrative tools is critical in enabling NASA’s standard of healthcare during increasingly autonomous operations. The Exploration Medical Integrated Product Team (XMIPT) project called Medical Exploration Development and Implementation Scoping (MEDIScope) developed and reviewed objectives and concept of operations for an exploration EHR (xEHR) with project stakeholders, developed preliminary high-level requirements, and coordinated the handoff of the project to a design and implementation team at the Johnson Space Center (JSC). This JSC team will develop system requirements for the xEHR with inputs from subject matter experts. Following final requirements development, a team will be chosen to develop the xEHR and to conduct a demonstration on a future exploration vehicle such as Gateway.

Climate Data Record Derived from Hyperspectral Sounders on AQUA, S-NPP and NOAA 20

Climate products are typically derived by performing spatial and temporal averaging of level-2 products. It is a time-consuming process to generate level-2 data products since modern hyperspectral satellite sensors have millions of observations each day with thousands of spectral channels for each observation. Additionally, differences in level-2 retrieval algorithms for different satellite sensors can lead to errors in the climate products. We have developed a Climate Fingerprinting Sounder Product (ClimFiSP), which is derived from spatiotemporally averaged level-1 hyperspectral radiances directly. The ClimFiSP algorithm uses consistent radiative kernels and a robust spectral fingerprinting method. It provides accurate data climate data fusion products from multiple satellite sensors. It eliminates or reduces the errors due to inconsistent L2 algorithms. We have applied this method to both AIRS and CrIS (on SNPP and on NOAA 20) data and generated two decades climate data records for atmospheric temperature, water vapor, cloud, trace gases, and surface skin temperature. The ClimFiSP are being transitioned to NASA data centers for routine generations level-3 products.
