Selective hydrothermal extraction of lanthanides: Mimicking natural ore-forming processes [Slides]

Rare Earth Elements (REE) consumption in the US was 20,000 metric ton in 2018. China controls 97% of the global REE market. The aims for new technology are to 1. Avoid investing in extraction of cheap LREE, extract M/HREE only → increase the value of the intermediate/final product, 2. Exclude extraction and concentration of U and Th → avoid investment in rad remediation, and 3. Maximize environmental friendliness of the technology. Hints from nature can aid in achieving these amis.

Long-Term Monitoring & Stewardship at Los Alamos National Laboratory [Slides]

Development and implementation of the Institutional Control Evaluation Project will include: Evaluate institutional surface water controls and infrastructure installed by LANL. Implement pilot project in the Los Alamos Canyon Watershed Spring, 2020. Initial evaluations will include canyon bottom controls with plan to expand program as funding allows. This will be a building block for successful Long-Term Monitoring and Stewardship (LTM&S) Program.

TRACER Overview 200220 [Slides]

The Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) User Facility is a U.S. Department of Energy Office of Science asset to be used by scientists to further our scientific knowledge about the atmosphere. The DOE ARM program has maintained facilities for use by the scientific community for 25 years. Data is freely available at www.arm.gov. The ARM science objective is to provide a detailed and accurate description of the Earth’s atmosphere to resolve uncertainties in earth system models. This report provides information on TRACER: TRacking Aerosol Convection Interations Experiment.

w18_plxa Final Report Viewgraphs [Slides]

For our fusion concept, we want to look at the influence of: 1) Density perturbations of the liner [shell that pushes on the target to get the target to fusion conditions] and 2) Magnetic field and anisotropic conductivity effects. On the compression of the target (final ion temperatures, without nuclear reaction calculations)

Advancing representations of turbulence in Earth System Models [Slides]

We have created a suite of coastally focused Large Eddy Simulation (LES), including a first ever investigation of the influence of the ocean bottom on turbulence. We have added important forcing not previously considered in LES models. We have evaluated a new more physically realistic and advanced closure against our LES database of simulations. Test cases will constrain constants in the new model and help us transition the mixing model from the deep ocean to the coastal ocean for the first time.

Income Trends among U.S. Residential Rooftop Solar Adopters [Slides]

Berkeley Lab tracks and analyzes solar-adopter demographic characteristics. A central element of this work is an annual report describing income trends of residential solar adopters over time and across geographies. The report is based on household-level income estimates for single-family residential solar adopters across the United States, and is intended to serve as a foundational reference document for policy-makers, industry stakeholders, and other researchers interested in demographic trends among residential solar adopters. The report is published with an accompanying interactive data visualization tool that allows users to further explore the underlying data. In addition to the annual report, Berkeley Lab also conducts targeted topical analyses on issues related to solar-adopter demographics and provides direct analytical support to organizations working to expand access to solar energy among low-to-moderate income households.

Nucleosynthesis Probes of Cosmic Explosions [Slides]

GW170817 demonstrated the potential of GW+EM observations of NS mergers: most direct observation of r-process production to date. But what can we really learn from the observations. Getting from the observations to constraining properties of the merger ejecta requires multiple aspects of simulation (merger, disk calculations, and radiation flow) and physics (atomic, nuclear cross-section, dense nuclear matter, neutrino, …). Can we maximize what we can do with observations.
