Rotary Transformer Seals Power In

Rotary transformer originally developed for spacecraft transfers electrical power from stationary primary winding to rotating secondary without sliding contacts and very little leakage of electromagnetic radiation. Transformer has two stationary primary windings connected in parallel. Secondary, mounted on a shaft that extends out of housing, rotates between two windings of primary. Shaft of secondary is composed of electrically conducting inner and outer parts separated by an insulator. Electrical contact is made from secondary winding, through shaft, to external leads.

Three dimensional spline-generated coordinate transformations for grids around wing-body configurations

A direct algebraic method was developed and applied to generate three dimensional grids around wing-body configurations. The method used is a generalized transfinite interpolation method which generates the desired coordinate transformation using geometric data only on the boundaries of the domain of interest. The geometric data that can be specified includes not only coordinates on the boundaries but also out-of-surface parametric derivatives that give a very precise control over the transformation in the vicinity of the surface. In addition to this, the method gives good control over the stretching of the mesh between different boundaries.

An analytical transformation technique for generating uniformly spaced computational mesh

An analytical transformation method which can map arbitrary physical coordinate grid distribution into desired computational coordinate with uniform grid distribution is derived. The transformation function and its higher derivatives are differentiable. Salient features include; (1) precise control of grid sizes; (2) more than one location of clustered grids; (3) exact positioning of particular computational nodes in the physical plane; and (4) ensuring several patches of uniformly spaced grids in the physical plane for the higher accuracies (such as at the boundaries), etc., while keeping the variation of grid spacing continuous to avoid numerical instability.

Rapid correlation analysis in a group of motions and homogeneous scale transforms of the plane (M(2)xR sub +)

A method is proposed for picking out a given image, in a plane, irrespective of translations, rotations, and homogeneous scale transforms of the plane. The correlation integral is calculated, using the method of abstract harmonic analysis. In this case, and also for groups of translations, it is possible to carry out the calculations using the rapid Fourier transform. The latter fact makes it possible to substantially reduce the number of computer operations for calculating the correlation integral, as compared with direct methods.

A BAPTA employing rotary transformers, stepper motors and ceramic ball bearings

The utilization of rotary transformers as an alternative to slip rings for the power transfer from solar panels to a satellite's main body could be advantageous, especially if an ac bus system is taken into consideration. Different approaches with main emphasis on the electromagnetic design were investigated and showed efficiencies of up to 99% with a 3 kW power capability. A solidly preloaded pair of ball bearings with ceramic balls assures proper transformer air gaps and acceptable torque changes over temperature and temperature gradients. The bearing and power transfer assembly is driven by a direct drive stepper motor with inherent redundancy properties and needs no caging mechanism.

Fast transforms for decoding Reed-Solomon codes

In the paper it is shown that the Chinese remainder theorem when coupled with a modification of Winograd's method can be used to compute Fourier-like transforms over GF (s super m), where m = 2, 3, . . . , 8. These new transform techniques are to decode Reed-Solomon codes of block length 2 super m -1. The results are shown to be more efficient than the more conventional method.

Split Coil Forms for Rotary Transformers

Split cores for rotor and stator windings of rotary transformer mounted around their respective coils (which are in bobbins) and cemented together. This arrangement simplifies winding of stator coil to go in a slot in inner diameter of stator coil. One practical application of rotary transformers fabricated according to this technique is for centrifuges, in which conventional sliprings are of uncertain reliability.

Digital SAR processing using a fast polynomial transform

A new digital processing algorithm based on the fast polynomial transform is developed for producing images from Synthetic Aperture Radar data. This algorithm enables the computation of the two dimensional cyclic correlation of the raw echo data with the impulse response of a point target, thereby reducing distortions inherent in one dimensional transforms. This SAR processing technique was evaluated on a general-purpose computer and an actual Seasat SAR image was produced. However, regular production runs will require a dedicated facility. It is expected that such a new SAR processing algorithm could provide the basis for a real-time SAR correlator implementation in the Deep Space Network.

A parallel VLSI architecture for a digital filter of arbitrary length using Fermat number transforms

A parallel architecture for computation of the linear convolution of two sequences of arbitrary lengths using the Fermat number transform (FNT) is described. In particular a pipeline structure is designed to compute a 128-point FNT. In this FNT, only additions and bit rotations are required. A standard barrel shifter circuit is modified so that it performs the required bit rotation operation. The overlap-save method is generalized for the FNT to compute a linear convolution of arbitrary length. A parallel architecture is developed to realize this type of overlap-save method using one FNT and several inverse FNTs of 128 points. The generalized overlap save method alleviates the usual dynamic range limitation in FNTs of long transform lengths. Its architecture is regular, simple, and expandable, and therefore naturally suitable for VLSI implementation.

Texture transforms of remote sensing data

Tone and texture are fundamental interrelated visual concepts. The concepts are used for the digital analysis of remotely sensed image data. The reported investigation had the objective to develop software for the quantification of image texture and to apply the texture information to both image enhancement and thematic classification of remotely sensed data. The quantitative texture information was applied to the analysis of Landsat-2 Multispectral Scanner Subsystem (MSS) data. Attention is given to the characterization of image texture, textured transformations, the subtext program, and a description of methods and results. It is pointed out that the inability to use the texture transforms of the Landsat MSS data for the thematic mapping of the study area's land cover contrasts sharply with the reported results of the textural analysis of digitized aerial photography by Hsu (1978).

Stratospheric warmings diagnosed using the transformed Eulerian-mean equations and the effect of the mean state on wave propagation

Terms for the transformed Eulerian equations are calculated in order to characterize the phenomenom of sudden stratospheric warming. The transformed diagnostics are applied to data for warmings during Dec. and Jan. 1976-1977, as well as cross sections for the directions of the Eiliassen-Palm (EP) fluxes and residual mean meridional circulations. The convergence of the EP flux was determined to provide a strong approximation to the total effect of waves in forcing the zonal mean flow. The EP fluxes change from an upward and equatorward direction to an upward and poleward direction during the warmings, and indications are reported that the effect is due to a feedback on wave propagation of an evolving mean flow. Ray paths in the meridional plane are computed for different mean wind fields to determine the direction of wave propagation according to linear theory based on the WKB approximation.

A new architecture for adaptive transform compression of NTSC composite video signal

In orthogonal transform coding of NTSC video signal, the data is processed in blocks. Processing a block of data that is maximally correlated leads to larger compression. This paper describes a new architecture for arranging the pixels in a block that yields higher correlation than the adjacent pixel blocks. The data is processed using adaptive, intrafield, discrete cosine transform, variable bit allocation coding. In subjective tests, the picture quality was good for an average of about 2 bits/pel for intrafield processing.

Global transformations of nonlinear systems

Necessary and sufficient conditions for a nonlinear system of equations to be locally equivalent, in a neighborhood of the origin in the real number system, to a controllable linear system are combined with several versions of the global inverse function theorem to define sufficient conditions for transforming the nonlinear system into a linear system. Additionally, a technique is introduced for developing a transformation under the assumptions that the columns of a controllability matrix span an n-dimensional space. Finally, the n-l form of the controllability matrix columns is demonstrated to be involutive

A numerical method based on the Fourier-Fourier transform approach for modeling 1-D electron plasma evolution

A numerical method is presented for studying one-dimensional electron plasma evolution under typical interplanetary conditions. The method applies the Fourier-Fourier transform approach to a plasma model that is a generalization of the electrostatic Vlasov-Poisson system of equations. Conservation laws that are modified to include the plasma model generalization and also the boundary effects of nonperiodic solutions are given. A new conservation law for entropy in the transformed space is then introduced. These conservation laws are used to verify the numerical solutions. A discretization error analysis is presented. Two numerical instabilities and the methods used for their suppression are treated. It is shown that in interplanetary plasma conditions, the bump-on-tail instability produces significant excitation of plasma oscillations at the Bohm-Gross frequency and its second harmonic. An explanation of the second harmonic excitation is given in terms of wave-wave coupling during the growth phase of the instability.

A simple example of a classical gauge transformation

Attention is given to the manner in which the interaction of a gravitational field with a diffusing gas is induced by a gauge transformation. Since the gas can be thought of as a field, the diffusion process may be represented by a Lagrangian density with the symmetry property of invariance under translation. While this property is lost when the field interacts with a static gravitational field, it is formally restored when an appropriate gauge transformation is performed. This ascription of field properties to a gas offers an illuminating illustration of the coupling of matter to a gauge field within the context of classical mechanics.

Image Matching Using Generalized Hough Transforms

An image matching system specifically designed to match dissimilar images is described. A set of blobs and ribbons is first extracted from each image, and then generalized Hough transform techniques are used to match these sets and compute the transformation that best registers the image. An example of the application of the approach to one pair of remotely sensed images is presented.
