Galerkin approximations for dissipative magnetohydrodynamics

A Galerkin approximation scheme is proposed for voltage-driven, dissipative magnetohydrodynamics. The trial functions are exact eigenfunctions of the linearized continuum equations and represent helical deformations of the axisymmetric, zero-flow, driven steady state. The lowest nontrivial truncation is explored: one axisymmetric trial function and one helical trial function each for the magnetic and velocity fields. The system resembles the Lorenz approximation to Benard convection, but in the region of believed applicability, its dynamical behavior is rather different, including relaxation to a helically deformed state similar to those that have emerged in the much higher resolution computations of Dahlburg et al.

Newton's method applied to finite-difference approximations for the steady-state compressible Navier-Stokes equations

Finite-difference approximations for steady-state compressible Navier-Stokes equations, whose two spatial dimensions are written in generalized curvilinear coordinates and strong conservation-law form, are presently solved by means of Newton's method in order to obtain a lifting-airfoil flow field under subsonic and transonnic conditions. In addition to ascertaining the computational requirements of an initial guess ensuring convergence and the degree of computational efficiency obtainable via the approximate Newton method's freezing of the Jacobian matrices, attention is given to the need for auxiliary methods assessing the temporal stability of steady-state solutions. It is demonstrated that nonunique solutions of the finite-difference equations are obtainable by Newton's method in conjunction with a continuation method.

An eigenvalue analysis of finite-difference approximations for hyperbolic IBVPs

The eigenvalue spectrum associated with a linear finite-difference approximation plays a crucial role in the stability analysis and in the actual computational performance of the discrete approximation. The eigenvalue spectrum associated with the Lax-Wendroff scheme applied to a model hyperbolic equation was investigated. For an initial-boundary-value problem (IBVP) on a finite domain, the eigenvalue or normal mode analysis is analytically intractable. A study of auxiliary problems (Dirichlet and quarter-plane) leads to asymptotic estimates of the eigenvalue spectrum and to an identification of individual modes as either benign or unstable. The asymptotic analysis establishes an intuitive as well as quantitative connection between the algebraic tests in the theory of Gustafsson, Kreiss, and Sundstrom and Lax-Richtmyer L (sub 2) stability on a finite domain.

An approximate viscous shock layer approach to calculating hypersonic flows about blunt-nosed bodies

An approximate axisymmetric method has been developed which can reliably calculate fully viscous hypersonic flows over blunt-nosed bodies. By substituting Maslen's second order pressure expression for the normal momentum equation, a simplified form of the viscous shock layer (VSL) equations is obtained. This approach can solve both the subsonic and supersonic regions of the shock layer without a starting solution for the shock shape. Since the method is fully viscous, the problems associated with coupling a boundary-layer solution with an inviscid-layer solution are avoided. This procedure is significantly faster than the parabolized Navier-Stokes (PNS) or VSL solvers and would be useful in a preliminary design environment. Problems associated with a previously developed approximate VSL technique are addressed. Surface heat transfer and pressure predictions are comparable to both VSL results and experimental data. The present technique generates its own shock shape as part of its solution, and therefore could be used to provide more accurate initial shock shapes for higher-order procedures which require starting solutions.

Approximate factorization with source terms

A comparative evaluation is made of three methodologies with a view to that which offers the best approximate factorization error. While two of these methods are found to lead to more efficient algorithms in cases where factors which do not contain source terms can be diagonalized, the third method used generates the lowest approximate factorization error. This method may be preferred when the norms of source terms are large, and transient solutions are of interest.

Approximate Solutions Of Equations Of Steady Diffusion

Rigorous analysis yields reliable criteria for "best-fit" functions. Improved "curve-fitting" method yields approximate solutions to differential equations of steady-state diffusion. Method applies to problems in which rates of diffusion depend linearly or nonlinearly on concentrations of diffusants, approximate solutions analytic or numerical, and boundary conditions of Dirichlet type, of Neumann type, or mixture of both types. Applied to equations for diffusion of charge carriers in semiconductors in which mobilities and lifetimes of charge carriers depend on concentrations.

Approximation methods for control of acoustic/structure models with piezoceramic actuators

The active control of acoustic pressure in a 2-D cavity with a flexible boundary (a beam) is considered. Specifically, this control is implemented via piezoceramic patches on the beam which produces pure bending moments. The incorporation of the feedback control in this manner leads to a system with an unbounded input term. Approximation methods in this manner leads to a system with an unbounded input term. Approximation methods in the context of linear quadratic regulator (LQR) state space control formulation are discussed and numerical results demonstrating the effectiveness of this approach in computing feedback controls for noise reduction are presented.

Methodology for sensitivity analysis, approximate analysis, and design optimization in CFD for multidisciplinary applications

Fundamental equations of aerodynamic sensitivity analysis and approximate analysis for the two dimensional thin layer Navier-Stokes equations are reviewed, and special boundary condition considerations necessary to apply these equations to isolated lifting airfoils on 'C' and 'O' meshes are discussed in detail. An efficient strategy which is based on the finite element method and an elastic membrane representation of the computational domain is successfully tested, which circumvents the costly 'brute force' method of obtaining grid sensitivity derivatives, and is also useful in mesh regeneration. The issue of turbulence modeling is addressed in a preliminary study. Aerodynamic shape sensitivity derivatives are efficiently calculated, and their accuracy is validated on two viscous test problems, including: (1) internal flow through a double throat nozzle, and (2) external flow over a NACA 4-digit airfoil. An automated aerodynamic design optimization strategy is outlined which includes the use of a design optimization program, an aerodynamic flow analysis code, an aerodynamic sensitivity and approximate analysis code, and a mesh regeneration and grid sensitivity analysis code. Application of the optimization methodology to the two test problems in each case resulted in a new design having a significantly improved performance in the aerodynamic response of interest.

The blind leading the blind: Mutual refinement of approximate theories

The mutual refinement theory, a method for refining world models in a reactive system, is described. The method detects failures, explains their causes, and repairs the approximate models which cause the failures. The approach focuses on using one approximate model to refine another.

A New Approximate Fracture Mechanics Analysis Methodology for Composites with a Crack or Hole

A new approximate theory which links the inherent flaw concept with the theory of crack tip stress singularities at a bi-material interface was developed. Three assumptions were made: (1) the existence of inherent flaw (i.e., damage zone) at the tip of the crack, (2) a fracture of the filamentary composites initiates at a crack lying in the matrix material at the interface of the matrix/filament, and (3) the laminate fails whenever the principal load-carrying laminae fails. This third assumption implies that for a laminate consisting of 0 degree plies, cracks into matrix perpendicular to the 0 degree filaments are the triggering mechanism for the final failure. Based on this theory, a parameter bar K sub Q which is similar to the stress intensity factor for isotropic materials but with a different dimension was defined. Utilizing existing test data, it was found that bar K sub Q can be treated as a material constant. Based on this finding a fracture mechanics analysis methodology was developed. The analytical results are correlated well with test results. This new approximate theory can apply to both brittle and metal matrix composite laminates with crack or hole.

Artificial neural networks and approximate reasoning for intelligent control in space

A method is introduced for learning to refine the control rules of approximate reasoning-based controllers. A reinforcement-learning technique is used in conjunction with a multi-layer neural network model of an approximate reasoning-based controller. The model learns by updating its prediction of the physical system's behavior. The model can use the control knowledge of an experienced operator and fine-tune it through the process of learning. Some of the space domains suitable for applications of the model such as rendezvous and docking, camera tracking, and tethered systems control are discussed.

Nonlinear control via approximate input-output linearization - The ball and beam example

A study is made of approximate input-output linearization of nonlinear systems which fail to have a well defined relative degree. For such systems, a method is provided for constructing approximate systems that are input-output linearizable. The analysis presented in this note is motivated through its application to a common undergraduate control laboratory experiment, the ball and beam system, where it is shown to be more effective for trajectory tracking than the standard Jacobian linearization.

An approximate analytical solution for interlaminar stresses in angle-ply laminates

An improved approximate analytical solution for interlaminar stresses in finite width, symmetric, angle-ply laminated coupons subjected to axial loading is presented. The solution is based upon statically admissible stress fields which take into consideration local property mismatch effects and global equilibrium requirements. Unknown constants in the admissible stress states are determined through minimization of the complementary energy. Typical results are presented for through-the-thickness and interlaminar stress distributions for angle-ply laminates. It is shown that the results represent an improved approximate analytical solution for interlaminar stresses.

Analytical shape sensitivities and approximations of modal response of generally laminated tapered skew plates

In the present determination of the derivatives of natural frequencies and mode shapes of a generally laminated tapered skew plate, with respect to various shape parameters, springs are used to simulate the essential boundary conditions. The independent shape parameters are plate surface area, aspect ratio, taper ratio, and sweep angle. Eigenvalues and eigenvectors are approximated over the range of the variable using linear, exponential, and pseudoexponential approximation schemes, and are compared with reanalysis-obtained values. Numerical results are presented for symmetrically and unsymmetrically laminated plates.

Best approximation to the weighted slab method

The weighted-slab method is modified so that, although it is still not exact, it gives the 'best' approximation in a minimization sense when energy loss cannot be neglected. In this approximation the species-dependent energy-change term that operates on the path-length distribution is 'averaged' over the slab-model solution for that particular energy and path length.

Approximations for inclusion of rotor lag dynamics in helicopter flight dynamics models

Approximate forms are suggested for augmenting linear rotor/body response models to include rotor lag dynamics. Use of an analytically linearized rotor/body model has shown that the primary effect comes from the additional angular rate contributions of the lag inertial response. Addition of lag dynamics may be made assuming these dynamics are represented by an isolated rotor with no shaft motion. Implications of such an approximation are indicated through comparison with flight test data and sensitivity of stability levels with body rate feedback.

Autonomous vehicle motion control, approximate maps, and fuzzy logic

Progress on research on the control of actions of autonomous mobile agents using fuzzy logic is presented. The innovations described encompass theoretical and applied developments. At the theoretical level, results of research leading to the combined utilization of conventional artificial planning techniques with fuzzy logic approaches for the control of local motion and perception actions are presented. Also formulations of dynamic programming approaches to optimal control in the context of the analysis of approximate models of the real world are examined. Also a new approach to goal conflict resolution that does not require specification of numerical values representing relative goal importance is reviewed. Applied developments include the introduction of the notion of approximate map. A fuzzy relational database structure for the representation of vague and imprecise information about the robot's environment is proposed. Also the central notions of control point and control structure are discussed.
