Aeroelastic Trim Drag Optimization of Mach 0.8 TransonicTruss-Braced Wing Aircraft with Variable Camber ContinuousTrailing Edge Flap

This paper presents an aeroelastic trim drag optimization study of the Mach 0.8 Tran-sonic Truss-Braced Wing (TTBW) aircraft with the Variable Camber Continuous TrailingEdge Flap (VCCTEF). An aero-structural analysis solver VSPAERO with transonic small dis-turbance, integral boundary-layer, and wing-strut interference corrections coupled to modeshapes computed by NASTRAN using the Galerkin method is developed to provide a rapidaircraft aeroelastic performance evaluation. Aeroelastic trim drag optimization studies areconducted for a VCCTEF configuration with 6-spanwise sections. Three different flight condi-tions corresponding to Mach 0.8 are selected for the aeroelastic trim drag optimization at thedesign and off-design cruise lift coefficients. The preliminary optimization results show thatthe TTBW aircraft with the optimized VCCTEF deflection achieves a drag reduction of about 9.2 counts, 9.6 counts, and 12.3 counts corresponding to the lift coefficients 0.661, 0.695, and0.729, respectively. When accounting for the actuator weight penalty, the corresponding dragreductions are 1.77%, 1.82%, 2.41%. A high-fidelity CFD solver FUN3D is used to validatethe aeroelastic trim drag optimization.

Optimal interaction of indenter with inhomogeneous plate

Consideration is given to a new class of problems dealing with an optimal design of an inhomogeneous plate during dynamic penetration of the rigid indenter. The quality criterion of the process is defined by the specific mass of the target, which absorbs the given kinetic mass of the indenter. Parameters of control are expressed in terms of mechanical characteristics, i.e., distribution of density and the related hardness across the plate thickness. The maximum principle of Pontryagin is used to search for the piecewise continuous control function. With consideration of impact conditions and characteristics for a given class of material, an optimal target structure criterion was estimated for engineering applications.

Computational simulations and beamline optimizations for an electron beam degrader at CEBAF

An electron beam degrader is under development with the objective of measuring the transverse and longitudinal acceptance of the Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility (CEBAF) at Jefferson Lab. This project is in support of the CE+BAF positron capability. Computational simulations of beam-target interactions and particle tracking were performed integrating the GEANT4 and Elegant toolkits. A solenoid was added to the setup to control the beam's divergence. Parameter optimization of the solenoid field and magnetic quadrupoles gradient was also performed to further reduce particle loss through the rest of the injector beamline.

Unraveling Defect-Dependent Conductivity-Type Switching in CuFe 2 O 4 for Enhanced Photoelectrocatalytic Reduction of Benzaldehyde

Photoelectrocatalytic (PEC) reduction provides a sustainable route for upgrading biomass-derived feedstocks with reduced energy requirements, yet remains largely unexplored beyond hydrogen evolution and CO 2 reduction due to the scarcity of stable photocathodes. Here, we report a defect-engineered CuFe 2 O 4 photocathode that enables directly quantified PEC reduction of benzaldehyde to benzyl alcohol using a singlecomponent, earth-abundant oxide. By controlling annealing temperature and oxygen partial pressure, CuFe 2 O 4 is systematically tuned from n-type to p-type conductivity. Electrochemical measurements, X-ray and ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy, and firstprinciples defect calculations collectively show that oxygen-rich annealing conditions suppress deep donor-type oxygen vacancies while stabilizing shallow acceptor-type copper vacancies, resulting in enhanced hole concentration and improved charge transport. In a mixed acetonitrile/water electrolyte employing 1,4-benzoquinone as a redox mediator, the optimized CuFe 2 O 4 photocathode achieves stable photoelectrochemical operation over 18 h under continuous illumination with a benzyl alcohol production rate of 2.57 μmol/h at −0.50 V vs Ag/AgNO 3 , corresponding to a Faradaic efficiency of 51.3%. This PEC approach lowers the required applied potential by ∼1 V compared to traditional electrocatalytic methods, offering a more energy-efficient route for carbonyl reduction. These findings establish CuFe 2 O 4 as a viable photocathode platform for sustainable photoelectrocatalytic organic transformations under mild reaction conditions.

Vapor compression distillation module

A Vapor Compression Distillation (VCD) module was developed and evaluated as part of a Space Station Prototype (SSP) environmental control and life support system. The VCD module includes the waste tankage, pumps, post-treatment cells, automatic controls and fault detection instrumentation. Development problems were encountered with two components: the liquid pumps, and the waste tank and quantity gauge. Peristaltic pumps were selected instead of gear pumps, and a sub-program of materials and design optimization was undertaken leading to a projected life greater than 10,000 hours of continuous operation. A bladder tank was designed and built to contain the waste liquids and deliver it to the processor. A detrimental pressure pattern imposed upon the bladder by a force-operated quantity gauge was corrected by rearranging the force application, and design goals were achieved. System testing has demonstrated that all performance goals have been fulfilled.

Development of a chemiluminescent and bioluminescent system for the detection of bacteria in wastewater effluent

Automated chemiluminescent and bioluminescent sensors were developed for continuous monitoring of microbial levels in wastewater effluent. Development of the chemiluminescent system included optimization of reagent concentrations as well as two new techniques which will allow for increased sensitivity and specificity. The optimal reagent concentrations are 0.0025 M luminol and 0.0125 M sodium perborate in 0.75N sodium hydroxide before addition of sample. The methods developed to increase specificity include (1) extraction of porphyrins from bacteria collected in a filter using 0.1N NaOH - 50 percent Ethanol, and (2) use of the specific reaction rate characteristics for the different luminol catalysts. Since reaction times are different for each catalyst, the reaction can be made specific for bacteria by measuring only the light emission from the particular reaction time zone specific for bacteria. Developments of the bioluminescent firefly luciferase system were in the area of flow system design.

Routh's algorithm - A centennial survey

One hundred years have passed since the publication of Routh's fundamental work on determining the stability of constant linear systems. The paper presents an outline of the algorithm and considers such aspects of it as the distribution of zeros and applications of it that relate to the greatest common divisor, the abscissa of stability, continued fractions, canonical forms, the nonnegativity of polynomials and polynomial matrices, the absolute stability, optimality and passivity of dynamic systems, and the stability of two-dimensional circuits.

Resonant power processors. II - Methods of control

The nature of resonant converter control is discussed. Employing the state-portrait, different control methods for series resonant converter are identified and their performance evaluated based on their stability, response to control and load changes and range of operation. A new control method, optimal-trajectory control, is proposed which, by utilizing the state trajectories as control laws, continuously monitors the energy level of the resonant tank. The method is shown to have superior control properties especially under transient operation.

The role of optimization in structural model refinement

To evaluate the role that optimization can play in structural model refinement, it is necessary to examine the existing environment for the structural design/structural modification process. The traditional approach to design, analysis, and modification is illustrated. Typically, a cyclical path is followed in evaluating and refining a structural system, with parallel paths existing between the real system and the analytical model of the system. The major failing of the existing approach is the rather weak link of communication between the cycle for the real system and the cycle for the analytical model. Only at the expense of much human effort can data sharing and comparative evaluation be enhanced for the two parallel cycles. Much of the difficulty can be traced to the lack of a user-friendly, rapidly reconfigurable engineering software environment for facilitating data and information exchange. Until this type of software environment becomes readily available to the majority of the engineering community, the role of optimization will not be able to reach its full potential and engineering productivity will continue to suffer. A key issue in current engineering design, analysis, and test is the definition and development of an integrated engineering software support capability. The data and solution flow for this type of integrated engineering analysis/refinement system is shown.

Intractable computations without local minima

An NP-complete problem which is not a spin-glass is exhibited. The NP-complete problem 3-satisfiability is also embedded into a continuous analog system with no hills in the energy landscape obstructing solution of the problem. There is, however, a large flat plateau. This shows how sculpting of the energy surfaces of continuous analog systems to remove hills may fail to aid solution of embedded combinatorial optimization problems.

Performance of a small, graphite electrode, multistage depressed collector with a 500-W, continuous wave, 4.8- to 9.6-GHz traveling wave tube

A small, isotropic graphite multistage depressed collector (MDC) and a short permanent magnet refocuser were designed, fabricated, and evaluated in conjunction with a 500-W, continuous-wave (CW), 4.8 to 9.6 GHz traveling wave tube (TWT). A novel performance optimization system and technique were used to optimize the TWT-MDC performance for saturated broad-band operation. The MDC performance was evaluated in both four- and three-stage configurations. Average TWT overall and four-stage collector efficiencies of 43.8 and 82.6 percent, respectively, were obtained for saturated octave-bandwidth operation. The isotropic graphite electrode material performed well, and shows considerable promise. However, considerably more test experience is required before definitive conclusions on its suitability for space and airborne TWT's can be made.

Reduced-dynamic technique for precise orbit determination of low earth satellites

A reduced-dynamic technique for precise orbit determination of low earth satellites is described. This technique optimally combines the conventional dynamic technique with the nondynamic technique which uses differential GPS continuous carrier phase to define the state transition. A Kalman filter formulation for this reduced-dynamic technique is given. A covariance analysis shows that when neither the dynamic nor the nondynamic technique is clearly superior, the reduced-dynamic technique appreciably improves the orbit accuracy. Guidelines for selecting a near-optimum weighting for the combination are given. Sensitivity to suboptimal weighting is assessed.

Hybrid state-space self-tuning control of uncertain linear systems

The paper presents a hybrid state-space self-tuner using a new dual-rate sampling scheme for digital adaptive control of continuous-time uncertain linear systems. A state-space-based recursive least-squares algorithm, together with a variable forgetting factor, is used for direct estimations of both the equivalent discrete-time uncertain linear system parameters and the associated discrete-time state of a continuous-time uncertain linear system from the sampled input and output data. An analogue optimal regional pole-placement design method is used for designing an optimal observer-based analogue controller. A suboptimal observer-based digital controller is then designed from the designed analogue controller using digital redesign technique. To enhance the robustness of parameter identification and state estimation algorithms, a dynamic bound for a class of uncertain bilinear parameters and a fast-rate digital controller are developed at each fast-sampling period. Also, to accommodate computation loads and computation delay for developing the advanced hybrid self-tuner, the designed analogue controller and observer gains are both updated at each slow-sampling period. This control technique has been successfully applied to benchmark control problems.

Fleet Assignment Using Collective Intelligence

Airline fleet assignment involves the allocation of aircraft to a set of flights legs in order to meet passenger demand, while satisfying a variety of constraints. Over the course of the day, the routing of each aircraft is determined in order to minimize the number of required flights for a given fleet. The associated flow continuity and aircraft count constraints have led researchers to focus on obtaining quasi-optimal solutions, especially at larger scales. In this paper, the authors propose the application of an agent-based integer optimization algorithm to a "cold start" fleet assignment problem. Results show that the optimizer can successfully solve such highly- constrained problems (129 variables, 184 constraints).

Validation of an Impedance Education Method in Flow

This paper reports results of a research effort to validate a method for educing the normal incidence impedance of a locally reacting liner, located in a grazing incidence, nonprogressive acoustic wave environment with flow. The results presented in this paper test the ability of the method to reproduce the measured normal incidence impedance of a solid steel plate and two soft test liners in a uniform flow. The test liners are known to be locally react- ing and exhibit no measurable amplitude-dependent impedance nonlinearities or flow effects. Baseline impedance spectra for these liners were therefore established from measurements in a conventional normal incidence impedance tube. A key feature of the method is the expansion of the unknown impedance function as a piecewise continuous polynomial with undetermined coefficients. Stewart's adaptation of the Davidon-Fletcher-Powell optimization algorithm is used to educe the normal incidence impedance at each Mach number by optimizing an objective function. The method is shown to reproduce the measured normal incidence impedance spectrum for each of the test liners, thus validating its usefulness for determining the normal incidence impedance of test liners for a broad range of source frequencies and flow Mach numbers.
