Stereoscopic computer graphics display system

Handbook was published on study which describes relative merits of two general-purpose, steroscopic display systems. Both systems are adaptable to most small data processing facilities and, with minimal hardware development, greatly enhance user ability to interact with computer and to interpret data output. Section also describes digital-to-analog converters designed for use with system.

BEAMR: An interactive graphic computer program for design of charged particle beam transport systems

A computer program for a PDP-15 is presented which calculates, to first order, the characteristics of charged-particle beam as it is transported through a sequence of focusing and bending magnets. The maximum dimensions of the beam envelope normal to the transport system axis are continuously plotted on an oscilloscope as a function of distance along the axis. Provision is made to iterate the calculation by changing the types of magnets, their positions, and their field strengths. The program is especially useful for transport system design studies because of the ease and rapidity of altering parameters from panel switches. A typical calculation for a system with eight elements is completed in less than 10 seconds. An IBM 7094 version containing more-detailed printed output but no oscilloscope display is also presented.

NASTRAN pre and postprocessors using low-cost interactive graphics

A design for a NASTRAN preprocessor is given to illustrate a typical preprocessor. Several displays of NASTRAN models illustrate the preprocessor's capabilities. A design of a NASTRAN postprocessor is presented along with an example of displays generated by that NASTRAN processor.

Visual space perception on a computer graphics night visual attachment

A series of experiments was conducted to compare five psychophysical methods of measuring how people perceive visual space in simulators. Psychologists have used such methods traditionally to measure visual space perception in the real world. Of the five tasks - objective-size judgments, angular-size judgments, shape judgments, slant judgments, and distance judgments - only the angular-size judgment task proved to be of potential use as a measure of simulator realism. In this experiment pilots estimated the relative angular size of triangles placed at various distances along a simulated runway. Estimates made when the display was collimated were closer to real-world performance than estimates made with an uncollimated display.

GASPLOT - A computer graphics program that draws a variety of thermophysical property charts

A FORTRAN V computer program, written for the UNIVAC 1100 series, is used to draw a variety of precision thermophysical property charts on the Calcomp plotter. In addition to the program (GASPLOT), which requires (15 160) sub 10 storages, a thermophysical properties routine needed to produce plots. The program is designed so that any two of the state variables, the derived variables, or the transport variables may be plotted as the ordinate - abscissa pair with as many as five parametric variables. The parameters may be temperature, pressure, density, enthalpy, and entropy. Each parameter may have as many a 49 values, and the range of the variables is limited only by the thermophysical properties routine.

The tasselled cap - A graphic description of the spectral-temporal development of agricultural crops as seen by Landsat

The time trajectories of agricultural data points as seen in Landsat signal space form a pattern suggestive of a tasselled woolly cap. Most of the important crop phenomena can be described using this three dimensional construct: the distribution of signals from bare soil, the processes of green development, yellow development, and shadowing and harvesting. A linear preprocessing transformation which isolates green development, yellow development and soil brightness is used to reduce the dimension of the signal space. Specific measurable pattern elements of the tasselled cap are used to estimate and correct atmospheric haze and moisture effects.

Retrieval techniques and graphics displays using a computerized stellar data base

The paper describes a stellar data retrieval system for which the data base consists of 28 machine-readable astronomical catalogs. Eleven of these catalogs have been combined into the Goddard Cross Index (GCI), which serves as the computer entry point to these catalogs. The full data entry from any of the GCI catalogs can be retrieved in a single computer run. With this system, it is possible to prepare candidates for observation by searching the data base for stars with given characteristics. Generation of plots of all catalog stars in or near the telescope's field of view to scale of Palomar, other atlases, or to the telescope itself for use as observing charts or to aid in identifying unknown sources, can be accomplished.
