Continuous thermostat setpoint monitoring and correction (Thermostat setpoint correction) v1.0

The Continuous Thermostat Setpoint Monitoring and Correction software is a set of fault detection and correction algorithms that can be implemented in thermostats with two-way OpenAPIs. It is written in the Python language. The algorithms aim to detect the most common and impactful efficiency problems associated with thermostat setpoints - overly aggressive heating or cooling setpoints, incorrect schedules/setbacks, and overly narrow deadbands. These algorithms can automatically detect faults, and implement associated corrective actions to bring the system back to a state of efficient operation. The algorithms can run remotely in the cloud, and directly implemented by connected thermostat manufacturers, or by third party service providers. The software enables a lightweight cost-effective energy management strategy for HVAC systems. The solution is specially viable for small and medium sized commercial buildings, where a full scale building automation system and fault detection and diagnostic tools are often unavailable.

An Open-source Llm Enhanced-tool Specialized In Helping Moose Related Problems And Tasks

MOOSEenger is an open-source, terminal-first chat application for the MOOSE ecosystem that couples specialized parsing of MOOSE documentation and “.i” input files with retrieval-augmented generation to deliver grounded answers about multiphysics modeling and workflows. It includes dedicated readers for MOOSE-style HTML and a pyhit-based parser that uses the MOOSE syntax tree to preserve block structure and attach retrieval metadata. A data-ingestion pipeline performs semantic chunking into atomic facts and stores them hierarchically in a local Chroma vector database that maintains parent–child relationships across documents; the system can ingest directories, individual files, and single-page web content, and it provides CRUD operations (insert, update, delete) to manage the corpus. At query time, relevant chunks are embedded, retrieved, and fused into the model context, with interactive features such as token streaming, persistent chat history, and dynamic RAG (retrieval triggered by user input or intermediate model output). Deployment is flexible: MOOSEenger runs with local Ollama models or remote Hugging Face/OpenAI backends—typically coordinating generation, lightweight tagging/summarization, and embeddings across three models—and it also supports a server mode and integration with the VS Code Continue interface.

MTRE

Multi-Token Reliability Estimation (MTRE) is a lightweight, white-box hallucination detector for vision-language models. Instead of using only the first output token, MTRE aggregates logits from the first ~10 tokens and feeds them to a small attention-based reliability head; per-token scores are combined via a sequential log-likelihood-ratio test with early-stopping, and an MTRE-t variant calibrates thresholds via cross-fitting. MTRE reports average gains of +9.4% Accuracy and +14.8% AUROC over common baselines across MAD-Bench, MM-SafetyBench, MathVista, and arithmetic/counting tasks, while adding ~4.3M params and ~1% inference overhead (~26 MB VRAM, ~0.94 ms per detection). Key limitation: requires access to early token logits and is evaluated on a handful of open-source 7B VLMs.

Evaluation of the EarthSHAB Stratospheric Solar Hot Air Balloon Flight Prediction Model Using Balloon Trajectory Data

Abstract The heliotrope is a solar balloon design which is constructed out of painter’s plastic, and the exterior is coated in charcoal powder. Darkening the plastic gives the balloon a high solar absorptance, which allows it to ascend into the lower stratosphere and float for hours at a time. The balloons have previously been used to lift scientific instruments into the stratosphere to study chemical explosions, earthquakes, and stratospheric aerosols. They have also been proposed as a platform for planetary exploration. Flight predictions are crucial to preflight planning to reduce safety risks and meet flight objectives. However, there exists a wide range of possible flight paths due to varying environmental conditions and solar balloon configurations. EarthSHAB is one such software that was designed to support flight planning using the weather forecasts and balloon properties to predict the flight path of a solar balloon. We compare EarthSHAB-simulated flight paths to a set of observed flight paths for the 3.5-m diameter heliotrope design called the “Cloudskimmer.” Using the criteria that the modeled paths must fall within 5% of the observations to be considered successful, we found that EarthSHAB successfully predicted the Cloudskimmer ascent rate and average float altitude 10% and 90% of the time, respectively. We also found that the average difference in the observed and predicted landing locations was 97 km and landing times were 54 ± 38 min. Significant deviations between the observed and predicted ascent rates and excursions at float were found to be associated with heavy payloads and convective cloud development, respectively. Significance Statement Solar balloons are used to lift scientific instruments into the lower stratosphere for hours at a time to study chemical explosions, earthquakes, stratospheric aerosols, and more. The flight paths of solar balloons can be difficult to predict due to variability in their design and surrounding environment. We evaluate the accuracy of EarthSHAB, a software that predicts the altitude profile and horizontal trajectory of a solar balloon using inputs such as the weather, balloon size, and balloon mass. Our results suggest that for the balloon design used in this study, EarthSHAB is best suited for modeling the behavior of balloons with lightweight payloads that do not fly within or directly above clouds.

Epoxy resin reinforced with carbonized chicken feathers: An innovative composite material with sustainable potentials

Here, this article explores a novel method for enhancing the mechanical properties of epoxy resin composites by incorporating carbonized chicken feathers as a filler material. The fabrication process involves carbonizing chicken feathers at 600°C and incorporating 5-10 wt% of the fillers into an epoxy matrix. The composites showed enhanced mechanical properties and samples containing 10 wt% filler exhibit the best properties. The performance corresponds to 49% increase in tensile strength, 16% rise in Young’s modulus, 40% improvement in flexural modulus, and 57% in flexural strength. X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive spectroscopy were employed to characterize the filler. This characterization provides valuable insights into the structure and chemical composition of the pulverized carbonized chicken feathers that contributed to the attained improvement in composites’ properties. Microstructural examination of the developed composite under scanning electron microscope also provides insights into matrix-filler interface and dispersion of the fillers within the composite matrix. The study not only highlights the unique combination of carbonized feathers’ inherent strength and compatibility with the epoxy matrix but also underscores the eco-friendly nature of utilizing agricultural waste. The findings suggest promising applications in industries demanding lightweight, high-strength materials, which can contribute to sustainable engineering solutions.

An On-Demand Electric Transit Case Study of New Rochelle, New York

Here, this article characterizes the performance and ridership patterns of an on-demand transit (ODT) service utilizing lightweight electric vehicles (EVs) in New Rochelle, New York. Ridership sociodemographics, travel patterns (both temporal and spatiotemporal), and energy use from the service were explored using travel and survey data from September 2019 through December 2023. The ODT service was found to be used more by women (nearly 60%) and younger demographics (>65% under the age of 42), with peak use in the middle of the day and a grocery store as a top origin and destination. The service was utilized primarily for short trips (86% under 2 mi), with approximately one-third of riders using the ODT service to connect to a train or bus. The costs associated with fueling/charging were compared for different types of fleet vehicles, and the small, right-sized EVs were found to have annual charging costs that were roughly half of the refueling costs for conventional hybrid vans, and 24 times lower than a fleet of diesel buses. Evaluating the vehicle fleet and mapping current socio-spatial travel demand can inform system performance, guide service area development, and support future planning such as expansion to nearby communities and transit hubs. The findings in this case study suggest that on-demand electric transit may be a significant and growing space for advancing highly valued public mobility services. Public transport interventions that consider right-sized, electric, on-demand vehicles can help improve mobility access and reduce energy use and refueling costs.

Polymer-fiber-reinforced polymers with enhanced interfacial bonding between polypropylene fiber and polyethylene matrix

Self-reinforced composites (SRCs) consist of reinforcing fibers and a base matrix made of the same thermoplastic polymer, offering lightweight, recyclability, and sustainability benefits. However, limited research exists on composites where the reinforcing thermoplastic polymer fibers differ from the base thermoplastic matrix. Here, this study focuses on investigating the mechanical behavior of such composites and exploring different surface modification methods to enhance the fiber/matrix interfacial bonding using polypropylene fibers and a polyethylene matrix as an example. It is shown that surface treatment with a commercial adhesion promoter containing n-butyl acetate significantly improves the interfacial shear strength between polypropylene fibers and the polyethylene matrix, increasing it by 145% compared to other methods investigated. Additionally, increasing the length of the embedded polymer fiber in the matrix leads to a notable increase in specific interfacial energy. Consequently, the thermoplastic polymer-fiber-reinforced polymers (PFRPs) using surface-treated woven polypropylene fabrics and a polyethylene matrix exhibit a 20% higher tensile strength and a 65% higher toughness compared to non-treated PFRPs. This study also shows that specific mechanical properties (normalized by the composite density) of the investigated woven PFRPs are similar to those of non-treated SRCs under uni-axial tension. Particularly, their ductility outperforms carbon-/glass-/aramid-fiber-reinforced polymers by at least 6 times at a same fiber volume fraction. The investigation of such composites and the exploration of surface modification methods present important progress in the field of thermoplastic PFRPs, which serve as a solution for addressing concerns related to recyclability and sustainability.
