Performance of the Zeeman analyzer system of the McDonald Observatory 2.7 meter telescope

The paper describes a multichannel photoelectric Zeeman analyzer at the coude spectrograph of the McDonald 2.7 m reflector. A comparison of Lick and McDonald observations of HD 153882 reveals no significant difference in slopes or zero points of the two magnetic fields indicating that the systematic scale difference of 30-40% is probably instrumental in origin. Observations of the magnetic variable beta Cor Bor revealed a more nearly sinusoidal magnetic curve with less internal scatter than the photographically determined field measures of the Lick and Mauna Kea Zeeman systems. Investigation of periodicity in the secularly varying magnetic minima of beta Cor Bor did not yield evidence of previously noted periodicities other than that expected from the time structure of the data sampling.

Temperature and pressure measurement techniques for an advanced turbine test facility

A high pressure, high-temperature turbine test facility is being constructed at the NASA Lewis Research Center for use in turbine cooling research. Several recently developed temperature and pressure measuring techniques will be used in this facility. This paper describes these measurement techniques, their status, previous applications and some results. Noncontact surface temperature measurements will be made by optical methods. Radiation pyrometry principles combined with photoelectric scanning will be used for rotating components and infrared photography for stationary components. Contact (direct) temperature and pressure measurements on rotating components will be handled with an 80-channel rotary data package which mounts on and rotates with the turbine shaft at speeds up to 17,500 rpm. The data channels are time-division multiplexed and converted to digital words in the data package. A rotary transformer couples power and digital data to and from the shaft.

Future production of hydrogen from solar energy and water - A summary and assessment of U.S. developments

The paper examines technologies of hydrogen production. Its delivery, distribution, and end-use systems are reviewed, and a classification of solar energy and hydrogen production methods is suggested. The operation of photoelectric processes, biophotolysis, photocatalysis, photoelectrolysis, and of photovoltaic systems are reviewed, with comments on their possible hydrogen production potential. It is concluded that solar hydrogen derived from wind energy, photovoltaic technology, solar thermal electric technology, and hydropower could supply some of the hydrogen for air transport by the middle of the next century.

Longitudinal variability of methane and ammonia bands on Jupiter

Results of a quantitative study of the longitudinal variations of methane and ammonia absorption on Jupiter are presented. A total of 78 high signal-to-noise ratio photoelectric spectra in the range 6000 to 6600 A were obtained on two consecutive nights, with complete longitudinal equatorial coverage each night through 9-min exposures covering a total of over 9 h. Analysis of the equivalent widths of the CH4 6190 A and NH3 6450 A absorption bands by means of a blind, automated, self-consistent method of continuum determination reveals large equivalent widths in both bands near longitudes of 35 and 340 deg and small equivalent widths near 150 deg, with a high degree of correlation between the equivalent widths of the bands. Continuum molecular absorption is found to be slightly negatively correlated with band equivalent widths. Radiative transfer calculations based on the model of Sato and Hansen (1979) using a doubling and adding technique indicate that the observed longitudinal variables of equivalent widths and continuum reflectivity are the results of longitudinal variations in ammonia cloud altitude.

Multi-anode microchannel arrays

The Multi-Anode Microchannel Arrays (MAMA's) are a family of photoelectric, photon-counting array detectors being developed for use in instruments on both ground-based and space-borne telescopes. These detectors combine high sensitivity and photometric stability with a high-resolution imaging capability. MAMA detectors can be operated in a windowless configuration at extreme-ultraviolet and soft X-ray wavelengths or in a sealed configuration at ultraviolet and visible wavelengths. Prototype MAMA detectors with up to 512 x 512 pixels are now being tested in the laboratory and telescope operation of a simple (10 x 10)-pixel visible-light detector has been initiated. The construction and modes-of-operation of the MAMA detectors are briefly described and performance data are presented.

X-ray and ultraviolet spectroscopy of Cygnus X-1 = HDE 226868

Observations of Cygnus X-1 with the solid-state spectrometer on the Einstein Observatory are presented. The X-ray spectra of two intensity dips viewed near superior conjunction did not exhibit increased photoelectric absorption. Rather, the data support a model in which an increase in the electron-scattering optical depth modifies both the observed spectrum and the intensity. The characteristic temperature of the intervening material is greater than about 50 million K. These measurements were in part simultaneous with observations by IUE. The ultraviolet spectrum and intensity remained relatively constant during an X-ray intensity dip.

The young open cluster NGC 3293 and its relation to Car OB1 and the Carina Nebula complex

On the basis of visible evidence, NGC 3293 appears to be associated with a number of objects in the Carina Nebula complex. UBVRI photoelectric photometry and MK-spectral specifications are presented for a large number of stars in this cluster and its surroundings (Car OB1). Over 70 cluster members with spectral types earlier than B9 are identified. Star counts indicate that the expected number of members brighter than V = 18 is 297 plus or minus 9. The cluster appears to be situated just in front of a dense dust lane, which itself appears to be part of the dust complex emanating from the center of the Carina Nebula.

Asteroid rotation. III - 1978 observations

Photoelectric observations of 32 asteroids observed from Table Mountain Observatory during the second half of 1978 are reported. Rotation periods were obtained for most objects. Absolute magnitudes and phase functions were not determined for any of these asteroids. The geometric mean rotation period of the 32 asteroids observed is 14.2 + or - 1.6 hr, as compared to 9.38 + or - 0.35 hr for 182 asteroids analyzed in Harris and Burns (1979). This difference is attributed to an observational selection effect which favors detection of fast rotation. If this is true, then the present sample contains the reverse bias, since it is complete in that a period (in some cases very approximate) was obtained for each object observed, but fast rotators are underrepresented due to prior discovery of their rotation properties.

Outer planet investigations using a CCD camera system

Problems related to analog noise, data transfer from the camera buffer to the storage computer, and loss of sensitivity of a two dimensional charge coupled device imaging system are reported. To calibrate the CCD system, calibrated UBV pinhole scans of the Saturn disk were obtained with a photoelectric area scanning photometer. Atmospheric point spread functions were also obtained. The UBV observations and models of the Saturn atmosphere are analyzed.

Spatial distribution and broad-band spectral characteristics of the diffuse X-ray background, 0.1 - 1.0 keV

Preliminary maps covering more than 85% of the sky are presented for three energy bands: 0.1 - 0.188 keV(B-band), 0.15 - 0.284 keV(C-band), and 0.45 - 1.0 keV(M-band). Preliminary analysis finds that: (1) there is no evidence requiring any substantial fraction of the soft X-ray background in this energy range to be extragalactic; (2) although large-scale anticorrelations between the lowest energy X-ray intensity and H(I) column density exist, most of the observed spatial variation cannot be explained by simple photoelectric absorption; and (3) although most of the B and C-band flux has a common origin most of the M-band flux does not come from the same material.

A magnetic study of spotted UV Ceti flare stars and related late-type dwarfs

A multichannel photoelectric Zeeman analyzer has been used to investigate the magnetic nature of the spotted UV Ceti flare stars. Magnetic observations were obtained on a sample of 19 program objects, of which 5 were currently spotted dKe-dMe stars, 7 were normal dK-dM stars, 7 were UV Ceti flare stars, and 1 was a possible post-T Tauri star. Contrary to most previously published observations and theoretical expectations, no magnetic fields were detected on any of these objects from either the absorption lines or the H-alpha emission line down to an observational uncertainty level of 100-160 gauss (standard deviation).

The lightcurve and phase function of the asteroid 304 Olga

Photoelectric lightcurves of 304 Olga were obtained at Table Mountain Observatory in 1978 near opposition. From these observations, and several observations made from Lowell Observatory a month later, a rotation period of 18.36 + or - 0.02 hr and a light curve amplitude of 0.20 magnitude are obtained. The range of solar phase angle covered by the observations is from 2.0 to 22 deg. The resulting phase function is well fit by the Bowell and Lumme model (1979), with Q = 0.02. This low value of Q is suggestive of a low-albedo object.

A photometric study of the eclipsing binary RX Hercules

A new photoelectric light curve of RX Hercules, a binary system with similar components, has been analyzed using Wood's computer model. RX Her, using Popper's spectroscopic mass ratio of q = 0.8472, turned out to be composed of a dimmer AO component and a larger B9.5 component. This detached system, upon analysis of the residuals in secondary minimum, shows some asymmetry during ingress which then disappears just before secondary minimum. The eccentricity e = 0.022 determined in this study is a little larger than previously published values of e = 0.018. In combination with the spectroscopic analysis of Popper, and ubvy data of Olson and Hill and Hilditch new photometric elements for RX Her were found.

X-ray observations of the OAO1653-40 field

The region of sky containing OAO1653-40 have been observed simultaneously with the Einstein and Copernicus satellites in 1979 August. A best position of RA = 254.318 degrees, Dec = -41.577 degrees (1950) and a period of 38.019 + or - 0.009 sec were obtained for the X-ray pulsar discovered by White and Pravdo. The X-ray spectrum shows considerable photoelectric absorption with an equivalent hydrogen column density of 2.3 x 10 to the 23rd atom per sq cm. An upper limit to any 0.5-3.0 keV flux from V861 Sco of (4 + or - 1) x 10 to the -13th erg /sq cm/sec was also obtained.

The remaining large minor planets with unknown rotational properties - 31 Euphrosyne and 65 Cybele

Photoelectric photometry results are presented for 31 Euphrosyne and 65 Cybele. The rational properties of the asteroids were found to be quite similar, both in period and maximum amplitude. Evidence was found for an opposition effect for 65 Cybele. The B-V and U-B colors were determined to be plus 0.67 and plus 0.30 for 31 Euphrosyne, plus 0.73 and plus 0.23 for 65 Cybele. Recent observations of 65 Cybele occulting a star have shown evidence of a possible satellite for this minor planet.

Observational studies of Cepheids. I - BVRI photometry of bright Cepheids

Over 1,000 differentially determined photoelectric BVRI observations and the resulting light curves are presented for 24 bright Cepheids accessible from Northern Hemisphere observatories. The internal precision of these data is shown to be better than + or - 0.01 mag, and the accuracy of transformation to the Johnson BVRI system is nearly as good.

Comparison of stratospheric aerosol measurements over Poker Flat, Alaska, July, 1979

Stratospheric aerosols were collected at Poker Flat, Alaska, in July, 1979, to determine particle properties, confirm coincident satellite SAGE measurements, and compare similar results obtained with different airborne samplers. Because of the steep slopes in size-distribution curves for larger particles, it is found that properties such as concentrations, aerosol mass, and optical extinction are very sensitive to small errors in radii. It is calculated that the concentration measurements agree with photoelectric particle counter results when a 16% radius change is introduced. An 8% radius change matches our calculated sulfate mass with filter mass measurements. And a 13% radius change results in agreement between the calculated optical extinction and coincident SAGE satellite results. Recognizing that different instruments can produce 10-20% differences in measured sizes, it is believed the results of these comparative measurements of SAGE and in situ instruments are essentially in agreement.
