AmeriFlux FLUXNET-1F US-Ton Tonzi Ranch

This is the AmeriFlux Management Project (AMP) created FLUXNET-1F version of the carbon flux data for the site US-Ton Tonzi Ranch. This is the FLUXNET version of the carbon flux data for the site US-Ton Tonzi Ranch produced by applying the standard ONEFlux (1F) software. Site Description - The Tonzi Ranch is located on the lower foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. The site is classified as an oak savanna woodland (Davis et al, 2016) and is situated on privately owned land. This site is representative of the oak savanna ecosystem that rings the Great Central Valley of California and inhabits the lower reaches of the Sierra Nevada foothills. This ecosystem is a natural laboratory for studying how ecosystem scale carbon and water fluxes respond to environmental change. The temperatures range between 0 and 40 C, the autumn, winter and spring are wet and cool, while the summer growing season is hot, dry and rainless. The overstory is dominated by blue oak trees (40% of total vegetation) with intermittent grey pine trees (3 trees/ha). Understory species include a variety of grasses and herbs, including purple false brome, smooth cat's ear, and rose clover. These two distinctive layers operate in and out of phase from one another. Growing season of the understory is confined to the wet season only, typically from October to early May. In contrast, the deciduous blue oak trees are dormant and leafless during the rainy winter months. The trees tend to leaf out in March and reach maximum LAI in April. During the rainless summers, the grasses in the understory die and the leaves experience soil moisture deficit stress References Davis, F., et al. (2016). "Oak woodlands." Ecosystems of California: 509–529.

In successive years, several other species were harvested. Logging was discontinued in 1980 when the land became protected under the private ownership of the University of Michigan. Patchy low- to high-intensity wildfires occurred yearly from 1880 - 1920, essentially burning the entire region.

AmeriFlux FLUXNET-1F US-Wi1 Intermediate hardwood (IHW)

This is the AmeriFlux Management Project (AMP) created FLUXNET-1F version of the carbon flux data for the site US-Wi1 Intermediate hardwood (IHW). This is the FLUXNET version of the carbon flux data for the site US-Wi1 Intermediate hardwood (IHW) produced by applying the standard ONEFlux (1F) software. Site Description - The Wisconsin Intermediate Hardwoods site is located in the Washburn Ranger District of the Chequamegon National Forest. A member of the northern coniferous-deciduous biome, surveys from the mid-19th century indicate the region consisted of a mixed stand of red, white, and jack pines. After extensive timber harvesting, wildfires, and farming activity, the region turned into a fragmented mosaic of stands of various ages and composition. The intermediate hardwoods site is one of ten sites that collectively represent the successional stages of development in the predominant stand types of a physically homogeneous landscape. In 2001, northern hardwood stands of all ages occupied 45% of the region.

Site Description - The Wisconsin Mature Hardwood site is located in the Washburn Ranger District of the northeastern section of Chequamegon National Forest. As an assemblage, the ten Wisconsin sites are indicative of the successional stages of development in the predominant stand types of a physically homogeneous landscape. The mature hardwood stand represents a typical naturally regenerated second-growth forest, free of anthropogenic disturbances for at least 70 years.

This is the FLUXNET version of the carbon flux data for the site US-xSJ NEON San Joaquin Experimental Range (SJER) produced by applying the standard ONEFlux (1F) software. Site Description - Located at The San Joaquin Experimental Range, in the western foothills of the Sierra Nevada, this 18.2 kilometer terrestrial field site is a mix of open woodlands, shrubs and grasslands with low density cattle grazing. SJER is an ecosystem research experimental area. It was originally conceived as a cooperative interdisciplinary research center to identify cost-effect methods of commercial livestock production in the annual grass-oak pine woodlands, while maintaining the integrity of the ecosystem. More recently, research objectives have expanded and diversified to include research projects making contributions to our knowledge of the patterns and processes working in this ecosystem.

AmeriFlux US-TLR Timberlake Observatory for Wetland Restoration (TOWeR)

This is the AmeriFlux version of the carbon flux data for the site US-TLR Timberlake Observatory for Wetland Restoration (TOWeR). Site Description - This tower is located in Timberlake Forest, a restored forested wetland located 4 km from Albermarle Sound on the North Carolina coast. The forest to the south of the tower had historically been ditched, drained and converted to agricultural land, and subsequently reforested with Black Gum and Cypress trees and naturally re-wetted in 2006. This southern region has a bottomland forest ecosystem which saw a large-scale succession event of pine trees following the reforestation efforts. The northern part of the forest had been ditched, but never drained or converted for other land uses. It is much wetter and more sparsely vegetated when compared to the southern region, and has a mixed bottomland forest and swamp ecosystem.
