The practical implementation of fatigue requirements to military aircraft and helicopters in the United Kingdom

The methods adopted in the United Kingdom to ensure the structural integrity of military aeroplanes and helicopters from the fatigue point of view are described. The procedure adopted from the writing of the specification to the monitoring of fatigue life in service are presented along with the requirements to be met and the way in which they are satisfied. Some of the outstanding problems that remain to be solved are indicated.

Practical aspects of designing for and evaluating structural integrity

The application of procedures for designing and evaluating structural integrity of various construction techniques is discussed. The fatigue performance improvement of the following conditions is described: (1) conical fasteners, (2) hole preparation, (3) interference fit, and (4) interference protection. The application of fatigue tests to determine fail-safe conditions is analyzed.

Summary of nondestructive testing theory and practice

The ability to fabricate design critical and man-rated aerospace structures using materials near the limits of their capabilities requires a comprehensive and dependable assurance program. The quality assurance program must rely heavily on nondestructive testing methods for thorough inspection to assess properties and quality of hardware items. A survey of nondestructive testing methods is presented to provide space program managers, supervisors and engineers who are unfamiliar with this technical area with appropriate insight into the commonly accepted nondestructive testing methods available, their interrelationships, used, advantages and limitations. Primary emphasis is placed on the most common methods: liquid penetrant, magnetic particle, radiography, ultrasonics and eddy current. A number of the newer test techniques including thermal, acoustic emission, holography, microwaves, eddy-sonic and exo-electron emission, which are beginning to be used in applications of interest to NASA, are also discussed briefly.

Practical field repair of fused slurry silicide coating for space shuttle t.p.s.

Study of short-time high-temperature diffusion treatments as part of a program of development of methods of reapplying fused slurry silicide coating in the field. The metallographic structure and oxidation behavior of R512E applied to Cb-752 coated under simulated field repair conditions was determined. Oxidation testing in reduced pressure environment has shown that performance equivalent to furnace-processed specimens can be obtained in a two-minute diffusion at 2700 F.

The STAR /self-testing and repairing/ computer - An investigation of the theory and practice of fault-tolerant computer design.

This paper presents the results obtained in a continuing investigation of fault-tolerant computing which is being conducted at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory. Initial studies led to the decision to design and construct an experimental computer with dynamic (standby) redundancy, including replaceable subsystems and a program rollback provision to eliminate transient errors. This system, called the STAR computer, began operation in 1969. The following aspects of the STAR system are described: architecture, reliability analysis, software, automatic maintenance of peripheral systems, and adaptation to serve as the central computer of an outer-planet exploration spacecraft.

Training and education requirements for the practical application of remote sensing.

Review and analysis of the training and education needs of the Earth Resources Survey (ERS) program both within NASA and outside (i.e., domestic and foreign users). Potential recipients of training are identified, as well as categories of knowledge needs. The relationships between trainee categories and knowledge needs and between trainee categories and training mechanisms are explored. Some consideration is given to problems of training for the effective utilization of remote sensing in developing countries.

Practical method for diffusion welding of steel plate in air.

Description of a simple and easily applied method of diffusion welding steel plate in air which does not require a vacuum furnace or hot press. The novel feature of the proposed welding method is that diffusion welds are made in air with deadweight loading. In addition, the use of an autogenous (self-generated) surface-cleaning principle (termed 'auto-vac cleaning') to reduce the effects of surface oxides that normally hinder diffusion welding is examined. A series of nine butt joints were diffusion welded in thick sections of AISI 1020 steel plate. Diffusion welds were attempted at three welding temperatures (1200, 1090, and 980 C) using a deadweight pressure of 34,500 N/sq m (5 psi) and a two-hour hold time at temperature. Auto-vac cleaning operations prior to welding were also studied for the same three temperatures. Results indicate that sound welds were produced at the two higher temperatures when the joints were previously fusion seal welded completely around the periphery. Also, auto-vac cleaning at 1200 C for 2-1/2 hours prior to diffusion welding was highly beneficial, particularly when subsequent welding was accomplished at 1090 C.

Silicon solar cell efficiency - Practice and promise.

The maximum efficiency of silicon solar cells is calculated and yields a value near 18%. Additionally, the performance of these high efficiency cells in a synchronous orbit radiation field is calculated and indicates that these cells would be superior to present silicon cells at all times. The performance of conventional cells is analyzed and several areas in which performance gains may be achieved are discussed. These areas include improvements in diffused region profile, in reduction of excess forward currents in cells made from low resistivity material and in the theory for describing complex solar cell structures.

A practical solar energy heating and cooling system

Recent study has concluded that solar-powered residential heating and cooling system is non technically and economically feasible. Proposed system provides space heating, air conditioning, and hot water. Installation costs will be greater than for conventional heating systems, but this difference will eventually be defrayed by very low operating costs.
