Dimerization and ring-opening in bis(diisopropylamino)cyclopropenylidene (BAC) mediated by [U(NR 2 ) 3 (CCPh)] (R = SiMe 3 )

Here the addition of 2 equiv. of bis(diisopropylamino)cyclopropenylidene (BAC) to [U(NR 2 ) 3 (CCPh)] (1, R = SiMe 3 ), in Et 2 O, results in formation of [cyclo-N(iPr)C(Me) 2 CH(NiPr 2 )C{[double bond, length as m-dash]CHC 3 (NiPr 2 ) 2 }][U(NR 2 ) 2 (N(SiMe 3 )SiMe 2 CH 2 )(CCPh)] (2) in moderate isolated yield. Complex 2 is the result of coupling and protonation of two BAC molecules, where complex 1 contributes the required proton. It was characterized by NMR spectroscopy and X-ray crystallography and represents a new mode of reactivity of the cyclopropenylidene fragment.

Application of the van der Pauw method for electrical conductivity measurements at high temperatures using an insulating compressing ring

High quality data on the high temperature electrical properties of ceramics, particularly oxides, is of great value for material selection, design, and modeling for a broad range of emerging applications. Utilizing the mismatch in the coefficient of thermal expansion between two materials, a purely mechanical method for establishing electrical contact in the van der Pauw geometry to measure the bulk resistivity of ceramic disks at high temperatures is presented. Measurements of a reference material, 20 mol. % Gd-doped cerium oxide, are presented up to 1000 °C. The viability of electrical measurements up to a maximum temperature of 1600 °C is also considered. Measurements are performed using multiple techniques and compared to literature values finding excellent agreement. Finally, the approach described in this work enables the van der Pauw method to be applied to many ceramic materials over a wide range of temperatures and environments.

Biochemical and structural characterization of an aromatic ring–hydroxylating dioxygenase for terephthalic acid catabolism

Significance More than 400 million tons of plastic waste is produced each year, the overwhelming majority of which ends up in landfills. Bioconversion strategies aimed at plastics have emerged as important components of enabling a circular economy for synthetic plastics, especially those that exhibit chemically similar linkages to those found in nature, such as polyesters. The enzyme system described in this work is essential for mineralization of the xenobiotic components of poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) in the biosphere. Our description of its structure and substrate preferences lays the groundwork for in vivo or ex vivo engineering of this system for PET upcycling.

SHADOW4: the popular ray tracing revived for evolving synchrotron sources in fourth-generation storage rings

We present SHADOW4, a new version of the popular ray tracing code. The SHADOW kernel has been completely rewritten in Python applying modern concepts of software engineering. A new user interface is available in the OASYS ecosystem. The new tool has been designed and implemented preparing the future needs both in computing (cloud computing, AI integration) and in the transit to fourth generation sources and beyond.

Averaged invariants in storage rings with synchrotron motion

In an ideal accelerator, the single-particle dynamics can be decoupled into transverse motion—the betatron oscillations— and longitudinal motion—the synchrotron oscillations. Chromatic and dispersive effects introduce a coupling between these dynamics, the so-called synchro-betatron coupling. We present an analysis of the fully coupled dynamics over a single synchrotron oscillation that leads to an averaged invariant with synchro-betatron coupling in a generic lattice. Here, we apply this analysis to two problems: first, a toy lattice where the computations are analytically tractable, then a design for a rapid cycling synchrotron built using the integrable optics described by Danilov and Nagaitsev, showing that although there is fairly complex behavior over the course of a synchrotron oscillation, the Danilov-Nagaitsev invariants are nevertheless periodic with the synchrotron motion.
