Quaternion wave equations in curved space-time

The quaternion formulation of relativistic quantum theory is extended to include curvilinear coordinates and curved space-time in order to provide a framework for a unified quantum/gravity theory. Six basic quaternion fields are identified in curved space-time, the four-vector basis quaternions are identified, and the necessary covariant derivatives are obtained. Invariant field equations are derived, and a general invertable coordinate transformation is developed. The results yield a way of writing quaternion wave equations in curvilinear coordinates and curved space-time as well as a natural framework for solving the problem of second quantization for gravity.

Computer graphics for management: An abstract of capabilities and applications of the EIS system

The Executive Information Services (EIS) system, developed as a computer-based, time-sharing tool for making and implementing management decisions, and including computer graphics capabilities, was described. The following resources are available through the EIS languages: centralized corporate/gov't data base, customized and working data bases, report writing, general computational capability, specialized routines, modeling/programming capability, and graphics. Nearly all EIS graphs can be created by a single, on-line instruction. A large number of options are available, such as selection of graphic form, line control, shading, placement on the page, multiple images on a page, control of scaling and labeling, plotting of cum data sets, optical grid lines, and stack charts. The following are examples of areas in which the EIS system may be used: research, estimating services, planning, budgeting, and performance measurement, national computer hook-up negotiations.

Supersonic inlet contour interpolation

A method for designing supersonic inlet contours is described which consists in the interpolation of the contours of two known inlets designed for different Mach numbers, thereby determining the contours for a third inlet at an intermediate design Mach number. Several similar axisymmetric inlet contours were interpolated from known inlets with design Mach numbers ranging from 2.16 to 4.0 and with design Mach numbers differing by as much as 1.0. The flowfields were calculated according to Sorensen's (1965) computer program. Shockwave structure and pressure distribution characteristics are shown for the interpolated inlets. The validity of the interpolation is demonstrated by comparing the plots of the flowfield properties across the throat station of the interpolated inlet with the known inlets which were designed iteratively. It seems possible to write a computer program so that a matrix of known inlet contours can be interpolated.

Tape tracking and handling for magnetic tape recorders

One of the critical performance and life limiting elements of a spacecraft tape recorder instrumentation system which has received little attention in technical literature is magnetic tape tracking and handling technology. This technology is required to understand how to gently transfer tape from one reel to another with proper alignment and a desirable uniform velocity at the read and write transducer heads. The increased demand for high data rate (i.e., multi-track spacecraft recording instrumentation systems), coupled with performance under extreme environmental conditions, requires a thorough knowledge of the various parameters which establish an optimum designed tape tracking and handling system. Stress analysis techniques are required to evaluate these parameters substantiated with test tape tracking data, to show the effect of each parameter on a tape recorder instrumentation tracking system. The technology is applicable to ground type tape recorders where the detrimental effects of edge guidance can be eliminated.

Laser produces color images from digital data

Color recorder uses two lasers to generate three different-colored beams. Modulators vary intensity of each beam according to information stored on magnetic tape. Together, three beams are sufficient to reproduce virtually any colors on photographic film. Tape synchronizes motion of beam-writing carriage with modulation imposed on beams.

Considerations for the application of finite element beam modeling to vibration analysis of flight vehicle structures

The manner of representing a flight vehicle structure as an assembly of beam, spring, and rigid-body components for vibration analysis is described. The development is couched in terms of a substructures methodology which is based on the finite-element stiffness method. The particular manner of employing beam, spring, and rigid-body components to model such items as wing structures, external stores, pylons supporting engines or external stores, and sprung masses associated with launch vehicle fuel slosh is described by means of several simple qualitative examples. A detailed numerical example consisting of a tilt-rotor VTOL aircraft is included to provide a unified illustration of the procedure for representing a structure as an equivalent system of beams, springs, and rigid bodies, the manner of forming the substructure mass and stiffness matrices, and the mechanics of writing the equations of constraint which enforce deflection compatibility at the junctions of the substructures. Since many structures, or selected components of structures, can be represented in this manner for vibration analysis, the modeling concepts described and their application in the numerical example shown should prove generally useful to the dynamicist.

A survey of compiler development aids

A theoretical background was established for the compilation process by dividing it into five phases and explaining the concepts and algorithms that underpin each. The five selected phases were lexical analysis, syntax analysis, semantic analysis, optimization, and code generation. Graph theoretical optimization techniques were presented, and approaches to code generation were described for both one-pass and multipass compilation environments. Following the initial tutorial sections, more than 20 tools that were developed to aid in the process of writing compilers were surveyed. Eight of the more recent compiler development aids were selected for special attention - SIMCMP/STAGE2, LANG-PAK, COGENT, XPL, AED, CWIC, LIS, and JOCIT. The impact of compiler development aids were assessed some of their shortcomings and some of the areas of research currently in progress were inspected.

Ray trajectories in a torus: An application of MACSYMA to a complex numerical computation

The study of ray trajectories of plasma waves in a torodial geometry using MACSYMA is an example of how symbolic, numerical, and graphical facilities can be used in concert to accomplish a complex computational goal. Computational features of this study which are of particular significance include: the derivation of code (i.e. writing functions to generate program fragments), the use of array functions to simplify the specification of a numerical iteration scheme, and the graphical presentation of the results. Mathematically, this study originates in the solution of a linear inhomogeneous partial differential equation in 3 dimensions by the method of characteristics. While it is possible to describe this equation compactly by using vector notation, and by specifying the spatial variation of the coefficients in terms of intermediate parameters, the transformation of the equation into a form amenable to solution is very tedious. A MACSYMA program is presented for obtaining description of the rf field structure excited by a waveguide located at the edge of a toroidal plasma confinement device.

Computer transformation of partial differential equations into any coordinate system

The use of tensors to provide a compact way of writing partial differential equations in a form valid in all coordinate systems is discussed. In order to find solutions to the equations with their boundary conditions they must be expressed in terms of the coordinate system under consideration. The process of arriving at these expressions from the tensor formulation was automated by a software system, TENSR. An allied system that analyzes the resulting expressions term by term and drops those that are negligible is also described.

Photorefractive materials for optical storage and display

Real-time data storage and processing using optical techniques have been considered in recent years. Of particular interest are photosensitive electro-optic crystals which permit volume storage in the form of phase holograms, by means of a charge transfer process. A survey of the state of the art of such holographic memories is presented. The physical mechanism responsible for the formation of phase holograms in such crystals is discussed. Attention is focused on various aspects of materials characterization, development and utilization. Experimental reversible holographic read-write memory systems with fast random access and high storage capacity employing this new class of photosensitive materials have already been demonstrated.

Numerical solution of the Navier-Stokes equations for super-sonic flows with strong shocks

The numerical solution of the full Navier-Stokes Equations for viscous flows with high Mach numbers and a strong detached bow shock was obtained. Two dimensional flows around a circular cylinder, and a circular cylinder with an aft-body in the form of a fairing, were considered. The solution of the compressible N.S. equations was accomplished by the method of finite differences. An implicit scheme of solution, the S.O.R., was used with the optimum acceleration parameters determined by trial and error. The tensor notation was used in writing the N-S Equations transformed into general curvilinear coordinates. The equations for the generation of the coordinate system were solved, followed by the solution of the N.S. equations, at the end of a set of given number of time steps. "Wiggles", constituted the one major problem that needed to be overcome. These oscillations give rise to quantities such as negative temperatures, which ultimately caused the computational program to break down. Certain dissipative finite-difference schemes damped these oscillations.
