The telecommunications and data acquisition report

Developments in Earth-based radio technology are reported. The Deep Space Network is discussed in terms of its advanced systems, network and facility engineering and implementation, operations, and energy sources. Problems in pulse communication and radio frequency interference are addressed with emphasis on pulse position modulation and laser beam collimation.

A remote millivolt multiplexer and amplifier module for wind tunnel data acquisition

A 30-channel remotely located multiplexer and amplifier module is developed for the measurement of wind tunnel models, which substantially reduces the amount of wiring necessary and thus provides higher accuracy. The module provides for a wide variety of transducer voltage outputs to be multiplexed and amplified within the model, and all signals are able to exit the module on two wires. The module is self-calibrating, and when coupled with the electronically scanned pressure instrumentation widely used in wind tunnels, it allows the modular wind tunnel models to be fabricated and checked before installation into the wind tunnel.

Data acquisition and projected applications of the observations from LANDSAT-D

The capabilities of the multispectral scanner and thematic mapper aboard LANDSAT-D are reviewed in terms of spectral, spatial, and radiometric resolution. The applications made possible by increased sensor sensitivity are discussed. Communication relay systems and the ground segment are also described.

Internationally supported data acquisition for solar system exploration in the 1990's

Procedures that could be followed for cooperative agreements between countries with large ground station antennas to help provide mission telemetry support for increasing solar system exploration are outlined. It is noted that mission cost reductions, and thereby greater chances that missions will be approved, are offered by the opportunity to make planetary probes multinational efforts. The Canberra station is a suitable site for the Japanese Planet A Halley's comet intercept probe. The French have requested U.S. cooperation in developing VLBI stations in the L-band to receive signals from the Venus balloons and landers being sent as part of a joint French-Soviet mission to Venus and Halley's comet. The construction of the stations would extend the capabilities already present with NASA's deep space network, particularly for tracking the Voyager visits to Uranus and Neptune.

Tracking and data acquisition system for the 1990's. Volume 7: TDAS space technology assessment

The results of the TDAS and user spacecraft technology assessment effort are provided. For each TDAS Satellite enhancement and user spacecraft element previously enumerated, the technology issues are identified and the R&D needed to resolve these issues is delineated. Subsequently, taking into account developments taking place elsewhere, the addition unique TDAS satellite module and user spacecraft element R&D efforts needed are identified, and conclusions are drawn in each case. From these conclusions, it is evident that with additional unique R&D efforts carried out for TDAS and appropriate user spacecraft elements the desired TDAS' capabilities for the 1990's can be realized and user spacecraft can be implemented that adequately interface with the projected TDAS.

Tracking and data acquisition system for the 1990's. Volume 8: TDAS frequency planning

Current planning calls for the TDAS to support new user and crosslink services, in addition to TDRSS-compatible services. TDRSS-compatible services would operate in current S-band and K-band channels used by TDRSS. New services, however, can take advantage of technology advances at microwave and optical frequencies. For augmented space-to-space services, 60 GHz and GaAs laser systems offer technical advantages, relative freedom from RFI, and a benign regulatory environment (i.e., minimal congestion and, in the case of 60 GHz, maximum regulatory support for TDAS-type services). For TDAS Earth-to-space and space-to-Earth services, the 30/20 GHz band offers the best mix of technical and regulatory advantages. But use of these bands would have to be coordinated with the U.S. military.

Photo-Optical Blade-Vibration-Data Acquisition System

Techniques developed for measuring blade vibrations using optical sensors fixed in casing around bladed turbine-engine stage. Measurement system coordinates and assembles inputs of many optical probes in order to monitor all of blades on spinning stage. Several points on every blade monitored in order to develop quantitative measure of overall bladed-stage response.

Data acquisition system for phase-2 KGF proton decay experiment

Phase-2 of KGF proton decay experiment using 4000 proportional counters will start operating from middle of 1985. The detection systems, in addition to measuring the time information to an accuracy of 200 n see, also records ionization in the hit counters. It also monitors different characteristics of the counters like pulse height spectrum, pulse width spectrum and counting rate. The acquisition system is discussed.

T-28 data acquisition during COHMEX 1986

As part of the 1986 Cooperative Huntsville Meteorological Experiment (COHMEX) a cloud physics instrumented T-28 aircraft was used in conjunction with multiple ground based Doppler radars to characterize hydrometeors and updraft structure within developing summertime cumulus and cumulonimbus cloud systems near Huntsville, Alabama. Instrumentation aboard the aircraft included a Particle Measuring Systems (PMS) Forward Scattering Spectrometer Probe (FSSP), a PMS 2D Cloud Probe and a PMS 2D Precipitation Probe, as well as a hail spectrometer and a foil impactor. Hydrometeor spectra were obtained in the interior of mature thunderstorms over the size range from cloud droplets through hailstones. In addition, vertical wind speed, temperature, Johnson-Williams (JW) liquid water content and electric field measurements were made. Significant microphysical differences exist between these clouds and summertime cumulonimbus clouds which develop over the Central Plains. One notable difference in clouds displaying similar radar reflectivities is that COHMEX hydrometeors are typically smaller and more numerous than those observed in the Central Plains. The COHMEX cloud microphysical measurements represent ground truth values for the remote sensing instrumentation which was flown over the cloud tops at altitudes between 60,000 and 70,000 ft aboard NASA U-2 and ER-2 aircraft. They are also being used jointly with a numerical cloud model to assist in understanding the development of summertime subtropical clouds.
