Finite-temperature density matrix embedding theory

We describe a formulation of the density matrix embedding theory at finite temperature. We present a generalization of the ground-state bath orbital construction that embeds a mean-field finite-temperature density matrix up to a given order in the Hamiltonian, or the Hamiltonian up to a given order in the density matrix. In this work, we assess the performance of the finite-temperature density matrix embedding on the one-dimensional Hubbard model both at half-filling and away from it, and the two-dimensional Hubbard model at half-filling, comparing to exact data where available, as well as results from finite-temperature density matrix renormalization group, dynamical mean-field theory, and dynamical cluster approximations. The accuracy of finite-temperature density matrix embedding appears comparable to that of the ground-state theory, with, at most, a modest increase in bath size, and competitive with that of cluster dynamical mean-field theory.

Doping a bad metal: Origin of suppression of the metal-insulator transition in nonstoichiometric VO 2

Rutile ( R ) phase VO 2 is a quintessential example of a strongly correlated bad metal, which undergoes a metal-insulator transition (MIT) concomitant with a structural transition to a V-V dimerized monoclinic ( M 1 ) phase below T MIT ~ 340 K . It has been experimentally illustrated that one can control this transition by doping VO 2 . In particular, doping with oxygen vacancies ( V O ) has been shown to completely suppress this MIT without any structural transition. We explain this suppression by elucidating the influence of oxygen vacancies on the electronic structure of the metallic R phase VO 2 , explicitly treating strong electron-electron correlations using dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT) as well as diffusion Monte Carlo (DMC) flavor of quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) techniques. DMC calculations show a gap closure in the M 1 phase when vacancies are present, suggesting that when vacancies are introduced in the high-temperature rutile phase, the dimerized insulating phase cannot be reached when temperature is lowered. Both DMFT and DMC calculations of nonstoichiometric metallic rutile phase shows that this tendency not to dimerize in the presence of vacancies is because V O 's tend to change the V - 3 d filling away from its nominal half-filled value, with the e g π orbitals competing with the otherwise dominant a 1 g orbital. Loss of this near orbital polarization of the a 1 g orbital is associated with a weakening of electron correlations, especially along the V-V dimerization direction. This removes a charge-density wave (CDW) instability along this direction above a critical doping concentration, which further suppresses the metal-insulator transition. Our research further suggests that the MIT is predominantly driven by a correlation-induced CDW instability along the V-V dimerization direction.

Metal-insulator transition in a random Hubbard model

In this work, we examine the metal-insulator transition in a half-filled Hubbard model of electrons with random and all-to-all hopping and exchange, and an on-site nonrandom repulsion, the Hubbard $\textit{U}$. We argue that recent numerical results of Cha et al. can be understood in terms of a deconfined critical point between a disordered Fermi liquid and an insulating spin glass. We find a deconfined critical point in a previously proposed large $\textit{M}$ theory, which generalizes the SU(2) spin symmetry to SU($\textit{M}$) and obtains exponents for the electron and spin correlators which agree with those of Cha et al. This critical point is expected to have the maximal quantum Lyapunov exponent. We also present a renormalization group analysis, and argue for the presence of an additional metallic spin glass phase at half-filling and small $\textit{U}$.

Kinetically constrained freezing transition in a dipole-conserving system

Here, we study a stochastic lattice gas of particles in one dimension with strictly finite-range interactions that respect the fractonlike conservation laws of total charge and dipole moment. As the charge density is varied, the connectivity of the system's charge configurations under the dynamics changes qualitatively. We find two distinct phases: Near half filling the system thermalizes subdiffusively, with almost all configurations belonging to a single dynamically connected sector. As the charge density is tuned away from half filling there is a phase transition to a frozen phase, where locally active finite bubbles cannot exchange particles and the system fails to thermalize. The two phases exemplify what has recently been referred to as weak and strong Hilbert space fragmentation, respectively. We study the static and dynamic scaling properties of this weak-to-strong fragmentation phase transition in a kinetically constrained classical Markov circuit model, obtaining some conjectured exact critical exponents.

Spin crossovers and superdiffusion in the one-dimensional Hubbard model

We use tools from integrability and generalized hydrodynamics to study finite-temperature dynamics in the one-dimensional Hubbard model. First, we examine charge, spin, and energy transport away from half-filling and zero magnetization, focusing on the strong coupling regime where we identify a rich interplay of temperature and energy scales, with crossovers between distinct dynamical regimes. We identify an intermediate-temperature regime analogous to the spin-incoherent Luttinger liquid, where spin degrees of freedom are hot but charge degrees of freedom are at low temperature. We demonstrate that the spin Drude weight exhibits sharp features at the crossover between this regime and the low-temperature Luttinger liquid regime, which are absent in the charge and energy response, and rationalize this behavior in terms of the properties of Bethe ansatz quasiparticles. We then turn to the dynamics along special lines in the phase diagram corresponding to half-filling and/or zero magnetization where on general grounds we anticipate that the transport is subballistic but superdiffusive. We provide analytical and numerical evidence for Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) dynamical scaling (with length and time scales related via x ~ t 2/3 ) along both lines and at the SO(4)-symmetric point where they intersect. Furthermore, our results suggest that both spin-coherence crossovers and KPZ scaling may be accessed in near-term experiments with optical lattice Hubbard emulators.

Chiral topologically ordered insulating phases in arrays of interacting integer quantum Hall islands

Here, we study networks of Coulomb-blockaded integer quantum Hall islands with even fillings ν = 2 k ( k being an integer), including cases with 2 k layers each of ν = 1 fillings. Allowing only spin-current interactions between the islands (i.e., without any charge transfer), we obtain solvable models leading to a rich set of insulating S U ( 2 ) k topologically ordered phases. The case with k = 1 is dual to the Kalmeyer-Laughlin phase, k = 2 to Kitaev's chiral spin liquid and the Moore-Read state, and k = 3 contains a Fibonacci anyon that may be utilized for universal topological quantum computation. Additionally, we show how the S U ( 2 ) k topological phases may be obtained also in an array of islands with ν = 2 k integer quantum Hall states and critical spin chains in a checkerboard pattern. The array and checkerboard constructions gap out the charge mode and additional “flavor” modes by virtue of their geometry. Furthermore, we find that a fine tuning of the system parameter is not needed in the checkerboard configuration and the ν = 2 case. We also discuss their bulk excitations, and show that their thermal Hall conductance is universal, reflecting the central charge c = 3 k / ( k + 2 ) of the chiral edge modes.

Quantum many-body scars in a Landau level on a thin torus

We review a kinetically constrained pair-hopping model that arises within a Landau level in the quantum Hall effect. At filling ν = 1/3, the model exactly maps onto the so-called “PXP model,” a constrained model for the Rydberg atom chain that is numerically known to exhibit ETH-violating states in the middle of the spectrum or quantum many-body scars. Indeed, particular charge density wave configurations exhibit the same revivals seen in the PXP model. We generalize the mapping to fillings factors ν = p/(2p+1), and show that the model is equivalent to nonintegrable spin chains within particular constrained Krylov Hilbert spaces. These lead to new examples of quantum many-body scars which manifest as revivals and slow thermalization of particular charge density wave states. Finally, we investigate the stability of the quantum scars under certain Hamiltonian perturbations motivated by the fractional quantum Hall physics.

Moiré quantum chemistry: Charge transfer in transition metal dichalcogenide superlattices

Transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) bilayers have recently emerged as a robust and tunable moiré system for studying and designing correlated electron physics. In this Rapid Communication, by combining a large-scale first-principles calculation and continuum model approach, we provide an electronic structure theory that maps long-period TMD heterobilayer superlattices onto diatomic crystals with cations and anions. We find that the interplay between the moiré potential and Coulomb interaction leads to filling-dependent charge transfer between different moiré superlattice regions. Further, we show that the insulating state at half filling found in recent experiments on WSe 2 /WS 2 is a charge-transfer insulator rather than a Mott-Hubbard insulator. Our work reveals the richness of simplicity in moiré quantum chemistry.

Electronic correlations in the semiconducting half-Heusler compound FeVSb

Electronic correlations are crucial to the low-energy physics of metallic systems with localized d and f states; however, their effect on band insulators and semiconductors is typically negligible. Here, we measure the electronic structure of the half-Heusler compound FeVSb, a band insulator with a filled shell configuration of 18 valence electrons per formula unit ( s 2 p 6 d 10 ). Additionally, angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy reveals a mass renormalization of m * / m bare = 1.4 , where m * is the measured effective mass and m bare is the mass from density functional theory calculations with no added on-site Coulomb repulsion. Our measurements are in quantitative agreement with dynamical mean-field theory calculations, highlighting the many-body origin of the mass renormalization. This mass renormalization lies in dramatic contrast to other filled shell intermetallics, including the thermoelectric materials CoTiSb and NiTiSn, and has a similar origin to that in FeSi, where Hund's coupling induced fluctuations across the gap can explain a dynamical self-energy and correlations. Our work calls for a rethinking of the role of correlations and Hund's coupling in intermetallic band insulators.

Twisted bilayer graphene. IV. Exact insulator ground states and phase diagram

Here, we derive the exact insulator ground states of the projected Hamiltonian of magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene (TBG) flat bands with Coulomb interactions in various limits, and study the perturbations away from these limits. We define the (first) chiral limit where the AA stacking hopping is zero, and a flat limit with exactly flat bands. In the chiral-flat limit, the TBG Hamiltonian has a U(4) × U(4) symmetry, and we find that the exact ground states at integer filling – 4 ≤ $\textit{ν}$ ≤ 4 relative to charge neutrality are Chern insulators of Chern numbers $ν_C$ = 4 – |$\textit{ν}$ |, 2 – |$\textit{ν}$ |, $\cdots$, |$\textit{ν}$ | – 4, all of which are degenerate. This confirms recent experiments where Chern insulators are found to be competitive low-energy states of TBG. When the chiral-flat limit is reduced to the nonchiral-flat limit which has a U(4) symmetry, we find $\textit{ν}$ = 0 , ± 2 has exact ground states of Chern number 0, while $\textit{ν}$ = ±1, ± 3 has perturbative ground states of Chern number $ν_C$ = ± 1, which are U(4) ferromagnetic. In the chiral-nonflat limit with a different U(4) symmetry, different Chern number states are degenerate up to second-order perturbations. In the realistic nonchiral-nonflat case, we find that the perturbative insulator states with Chern number $ν_C$ = 0 (0 < |$ν_C$| < 4 – |$\textit{ν}$ |) at integer fillings $\textit{ν}$ are fully (partially) intervalley coherent, while the insulator states with Chern number |$ν_C$| = 4 – |$\textit{ν}$ | are valley polarized. However, for 0 < |$ν_C$| ≤ 4 – |$\textit{ν}$ |, the fully intervalley coherent states are highly competitive (0.005 meV/electron higher). At nonzero magnetic field |$\textit{B}$ | > 0, a first-order phase transition for $\textit{ν}$ = ± 1, ± 2 from Chern number $ν_C$ = sgn ($\textit{νB}$)(2 – |$\textit{ν}$ |) to $ν_C$ = sgn ($\textit{νB}$)(4 – |$\textit{ν}$ |) is expected, which agrees with recent experimental observations. Lastly, the TBG Hamiltonian reduces into an extended Hubbard model in the stabilizer code limit.

Intertwined charge, spin, and pairing orders in doped iron ladders

Motivated by recent experimental progress on iron-based ladder compounds, we study the doped two-orbital Hubbard model for the two-leg ladder BaFe2S3. The model is constructed by using ab initio hopping parameters and the ground state properties are investigated using the density matrix renormalization group method. We show that the (π,0) magnetic ordering at half filling, with ferromagnetic rungs and antiferromagnetic legs, becomes incommensurate upon hole doping. Moreover, depending on the strength of the Hubbard U coupling, other magnetic patterns, such as (0,π), are also stabilized. We found that the binding energy for two holes becomes negative for intermediate Hubbard interaction strength, indicating hole pairing. Due to the crystal-field split among orbitals, the holes primarily reside in one orbital, with the other one remaining half filled. This resembles orbital selective Mott states. The formation of tight hole pairs continues with increasing hole density, as long as the magnetic order remains antiferromagnetic in one direction. The study of pair-pair correlations indicates the dominance of the intraorbital spin-singlet channel, as opposed to other pairing channels. Although in a range of hole doping pairing correlations decay slowly, our results can also be interpreted as corresponding to a charge density wave made of pairs, a precursor of eventual superconductivity after interladder couplings are included. Such a scenario of intertwined orders has been extensively discussed before in the cuprates, and our results suggest a similar physics could exist in ladder iron-based superconductors. Finally, we also show that a robust Hund's coupling is needed for pairing to occur.

Adiabatic construction of hierarchical quantum Hall states

We propose an exact model of anyon ground states including higher Landau levels, and use it to obtain fractionally quantized Hall states at filling fractions ν = p/(p(m - 1) + 1) with m odd, from integer Hall states at ν = p through adiabatic localization of magnetic flux. For appropriately chosen two-body potential interactions, the energy gap remains intact during the process. The construction hence establishes the existence of incompressible states at these fillings.

Optical conductivity of the two-dimensional Hubbard model: Vertex corrections, emergent Galilean invariance, and the accuracy of the single-site dynamical mean field approximation

We compute the frequency-dependent conductivity of the two-dimensional square lattice Hubbard model at zero temperature as a function of density to second order in the interaction strength, and compare the results to the predictions of single-site dynamical mean field theory computed at the same order. We find that despite the neglect of vertex corrections, the single-site dynamical mean field approximation produces semiquantitatively accurate results for most carrier concentrations, but fails qualitatively for the nearly empty or nearly filled band cases where the model exhibits an emergent Galilean invariance. The DMFT approximation also becomes qualitatively inaccurate very near half filling if nesting is important.

Theory of a continuous bandwidth-tuned Wigner-Mott transition

Here we develop a theory for a continuous bandwidth-tuned transition at fixed fractional electron filling from a metal with a generic Fermi surface to a “Wigner-Mott” insulator that spontaneously breaks crystalline space-group symmetries. Across the quantum critical point, (i) the entire electronic Fermi surface disappears abruptly upon approaching from the metallic side, and (ii) the insulating charge gap and various order parameters associated with the spontaneously broken space-group symmetries vanish continuously upon approaching from the insulating side. Additionally, the insulating side hosts a Fermi surface of neutral spinons. We present a framework for describing such continuous metal-insulator transitions (MITs) and analyze the example of a bandwidth-tuned transition at a filling, $v$=1/6, for spinful electrons on the triangular lattice. By extending the theory to a certain large-$N$ limit, we provide a concrete example of such a continuous MIT and discuss numerous experimental signatures near the critical point. We place our results in the context of recent experiments in moiré transition metal dichalcogenide materials.

Metal to Wigner-Mott insulator transition in two-leg ladders

Here we study theoretically the quantum phase transition from a metal to a Wigner-Mott insulator at fractional commensurate filling on a two-leg ladder. We show that a continuous transition out of a symmetry-preserving Luttinger liquid metal is possible where the onset of insulating behavior is accompanied by the breaking of the lattice translation symmetry. At fillings $v$=1/$m$ per spin per unit cell, we find that the spin degrees of freedom also acquire a gap at the Wigner-Mott transition for odd integer $m$. In contrast for even integer $m$, the spin sector remains gapless and the resulting insulator is a ladder analog of the two-dimensional spinon surface state. In both cases, a charge neutral spinless mode remains gapless across the Wigner-Mott transition. We discuss physical properties of these transitions and comment on insights obtained for thinking about continuous Wigner-Mott transitions in two-dimensional systems which are being studied in moire materials.

Phase diagram of the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger-Hubbard model on a square lattice

The Hubbard and Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) Hamiltonians are iconic models for understanding the qualitative effects of electron-electron and electron-phonon interactions, respectively. In the two-dimensional square lattice Hubbard model at half filling, the on-site Coulomb repulsion U between up and down electrons induces antiferromagnetic (AFM) order and a Mott insulating phase. On the other hand, for the SSH model, there is an AFM phase when the electron-phonon coupling λ is less than a critical value λ c and a bond order wave when λ > λ c . In this Letter, we perform numerical studies on the square lattice optical Su-Schrieffer-Heeger-Hubbard Hamiltonian, which combines both interactions. We use the determinant quantum Monte Carlo method which does not suffer from the fermionic sign problem at half filling. We map out the phase diagram and find that it exhibits a direct first-order transition between an antiferromagnetic phase and a bond-ordered wave as λ increases. Here, the AFM phase is characterized by two different regions. At smaller λ the behavior is similar to that of the pure Hubbard model; the other region, while maintaining long-range AFM order, exhibits larger kinetic energies and double occupancy, i.e., larger quantum fluctuations, similar to the AFM phase found in the pure SSH model.

Integer quantum Hall effect and enhanced g factor in quantum-confined Cd 3 As 2 films

Here, we investigate the integer quantum Hall effect in Cd 3 ⁢As 2 thin films under conditions of strong to moderate quantum confinement (thicknesses of 10, 12, and 15 nm). In all the films, we observe the integer quantum Hall effect in the spin-polarized lowest Landau level (filling factor v = 1) and at spin-degenerate higher index Landau levels with even filling factors (v = 2,4,6). With increasing quantum confinement, we also observe a lifting of the Landau-level spin degeneracy at v = 3, manifest as the emergence of an anomaly in the longitudinal and Hall resistivities. Tight-binding calculations show that the enhanced g factor likely arises from a combination of quantum confinement and corrections from nearby subbands.
