The goal of my project was to create a graphical user interface for a prototype crop scheduler. The crop scheduler was developed by Dr. Jorge Leon and Laura Whitaker for the ALSS (Advanced Life Support System) program. The addition of a system-independent graphical user interface to the crop planning tool will make the application more accessible to a wider range of users and enhance its value as an analysis, design, and planning tool. My presentation will demonstrate the form and functionality of this interface. This graphical user interface allows users to edit system parameters stored in the file system. Data on the interaction of the crew, crops, and waste processing system with the available system resources is organized and labeled. Program output, which is stored in the file system, is also presented to the user in performance-time plots and organized charts. The menu system is designed to guide the user through analysis and decision making tasks, providing some help if necessary. The Java programming language was used to develop this interface in hopes of providing portability and remote operation.
Programming System for Structural Synthesis, EAL/PROSSS, provides structural-synthesis capability by combining EAL and CONMIN computer programs with set of interface procedures. EAL is general-purpose finiteelement structural-analysis program; CONMIN is general-purpose optimization program. User supplies two smaller problem-dependent programs to define design variables, constraints, and objective function.
A program has been written for the identification of parameters in certain linear systems. These systems appear in biomedical problems, particularly in compartmental models of pharmacokinetics. The method presented here assumes that some of the state variables are regularly modified by jump conditions. This simulates administration of drugs following some prescribed drug regime. Parameters are identified by a least-square fit of the linear differential system to a set of experimental observations. The method is especially suited when the interval of observation of the system is very long.
A computer program was developed to describe the three-dimensional motion of the Dynamic Docking Test System active table. The input consists of inertia and geometry data, actuator structural data, forcing function data, hydraulics data, servo electronics data, and integration control data. The output consists of table responses, actuator bending responses, and actuator responses.
Nonlinear discrete time sampled systems optimal control by dynamic programming, with application to stochastic systems
Computer program calculates the steady state flow characteristics of an ideal compressible gas in a complex piping system. The program calculates the stagnation and total temperature, static and total pressure, loss factor, and forces on each element in the piping system.
The Solar System Exploration Education Forum has worked for five years to foster Education and Public Outreach (E/PO) cooperation among missions and programs in order to leverage resources and better meet the needs of educators and the public. These efforts are coming together in a number of programs and products and in '2004 - The Year of the Solar System.' NASA's practice of having independent E/PO programs for each mission and its public affairs emphasis on uniqueness has led to a public perception of a fragmented solar system exploration program. By working to integrate solar system E/PO, the breadth and depth of the solar system exploration program is revealed. When emphasis is put on what missions have in common, as well as their differences, each mission is seen in the context of the whole program.
Pyrotechnic systems, high burn rate propellant and explosive-actuated mechanisms, have been used extensively in aerospace vehicles to perform a variety of work functions, including crew escape, staging, deployment and destruction. Pyrotechnic system principles are described in this report along with their applications on typical military fighter aircraft, Mercury, Gemini, Apollo, and a representative unmanned spacecraft. To consider the possible pyrotechnic applications on the space shuttle the mechanical functions on a large commercial aircraft, similar in scale to the shuttle orbiter, were reviewed. Many potential applications exist for pyrotechnic system on the space shuttle, both in conventional short-duration functions and in longer duration and/or repetitive type gas generators.
Design concepts for stored program data acquisition system in spacecraft applications
Data collected via the International GPM Program could be used to provide a solution for the NOAA Estuarine Reserves Division s System-wide Monitoring Program by augmenting in situ rainfall measurements with data acquired via future satellite-acquired precipitation data. This Candidate Solution is in alignment with the Coastal Management National Application and will benefit society by assisting in estuary preservation.
This article introduces an interactive parallel programming environment (IPPE) that simplifies the generation and execution of parallel programs. One of the tasks of the environment is to generate message-passing parallel programs for homogeneous and heterogeneous computing platforms. The parallel programs are represented by using visual objects. This is accomplished with the help of a graphical programming editor that is implemented in Java and enables portability to a wide variety of computer platforms. In contrast to other graphical programming systems, reusable parts of the programs can be stored in a program library to support rapid prototyping. In addition, runtime performance data on different computing platforms is collected in a database. A selection process determines dynamically the software and the hardware platform to be used to solve the problem in minimal wall-clock time. The environment is currently being tested on a Grand Challenge problem, the NASA four-dimensional data assimilation system.
The advanced control and power system (ACAPS) program is to establish the technology necessary to satisfy space station and related large space structures requirements for efficient, reliable, and cost effective energy storage and attitude control. Technology advances in the area of integrated flywheel systems capable of performing the dual functions of energy storage and attitude control are outlined.
This paper discusses some of the key options for Mars programs, missions, bases, elements, and systems. Program and mission options include Mars flyby, orbiting, and landing missions; they include near-term 'sortie' missions, and later, longer-duration Mars-base missions. Key program and mission parameters include the mix of manned/unmanned elements, the number and types of space vehicles used, types of science done, trajectory options and implications launch timing and schedules, etc. The key mission parameters strongly affect the nature, sizing, and quantity of earth-to-orbit (ETO) vehicles. On-orbit assembly of space vehicles (SVs) is also an important related consideration. The potential degree of utilization of the Space Station (SS) and other then-existing elements is a key question, and several possibilities are discussed in this paper. Several configurations of SVs are provided. Several options are identified for the Mars base infra-structure, and parametric data is shown for buildup of bases as a function of mission and vehicle type. Technologies required for the missions are also discussed.
This paper describes the Payload Deployment and Retrieval System (PDRS) Failure Analysis and Diagnosis problem, our planned use of an expert system employing the C Language Integrated Production System (CLIPS) language to solve it, and our progress to date. In addition, it will address the importance of the overall design within the context of automation in the RTDS architecture, the methodology used, and the validation approach taken. The Decision Support System will evolve as a modularized rule-based system programmed in the CLIPS expert system language. Each of five modules represents a subsystem of the RMS and includes the positioning and retention hardware (MPM/MRL), the Display & Control panel (D8C), the Arm Based Electronics (ABE), the End Effector (EE), and the Orbiter to RMS data interface unit (MCIU). The MPM/MRL subsystem was chosen as the target of a prototype development and its knowledge base is completed. Testing and validation of the software is conducted by experienced mission controllers. The initial design stages for the D&C panel module are beginning.
C Language Integration Production System (CLIPS), a NASA-developed expert systems program, has enabled a security systems manufacturer to design a new generation of hardware. C.CURESystem 1 Plus, manufactured by Software House, is a software based system that is used with a variety of access control hardware at installations around the world. Users can manage large amounts of information, solve unique security problems and control entry and time scheduling. CLIPS acts as an information management tool when accessed by C.CURESystem 1 Plus. It asks questions about the hardware and when given the answer, recommends possible quick solutions by non-expert persons.
Global Positioning System (GPS) program status are discussed and plans for ensuring the long term continuation of the program are presented. Performance of GPS clocks is presented in terms of on orbit data as portrayed by GPS master control station kalman filter processing. The GPS Clock reliability program is reviewed in depth and future plans fo the overall clock program are published.
