The Role of Alkalis in Orchestrating Uranyl-Peroxide Reactivity Leading to Direct Air Capture of Carbon Dioxide

Spectator ions have known and emerging roles in aqueous metal-cation chemistry, respectively directing solubility, speciation, and reactivity. Here, in this work, we isolate and structurally characterize the last two metastable members of the alkali uranyl triperoxide series, the Rb + and Cs + salts (Cs-U 1 and Rb-U 1 ). We document their rapid solution polymerization via small-angle X-ray scattering, which is compared to the more stable Li + , Na + and K + analogues. To understand the role of the alkalis, we also quantify alkali-hydroxide promoted peroxide deprotonation and decomposition, which generally exhibits increasing reactivity with increasing alkali size. Cs-U 1 , the most unstable of the uranyl triperoxide monomers, undergoes ambient direct air capture of CO 2 in the solid-state, converting to Cs 4 [U VI O 2 (CO 3 ) 3 ], evidenced by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, and Raman spectroscopy. We have attempted to benchmark the evolution of Cs-U 1 to uranyl tricarbonate, which involves a transient, unstable hygroscopic solid that contains predominantly pentavalent uranium, quantified by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Powder X-ray diffraction suggests this intermediate state contains a hydrous derivative of CsU V O 3 , where the parent phase has been computationally predicted, but not yet synthesized.

Pertechnetate/perrhenate–capped Zr/Hf–Dihydroxide Dimers: Elucidating Zr–TcO 4 Co–Mobility in the Nuclear Fuel Cycle

Spent nuclear fuel contains heavy element fission products that must be separated for effective reprocessing for a safe and sustainable nuclear fuel cycle. 93 Zr and 99 Tc are high-yield fission products that co-transport in liquid-liquid extraction processes. Here we seek atomic-level information of this co-extraction process, as well as fundamental knowledge about Zr IV (and Hf IV ) aqueous speciation in the presence of topology-directing ligands such as pertechnetate (TcO 4 – ) and non-radioactive surrogate perrhenate (ReO 4 – ). In this context, we show that the flat tetrameric oxyhydroxyl-cluster [M IV 4 (OH) 8 (H 2 O) 16 ] 8+ (and related polymers) is dissociated by perrhenate/pertechnetate to yield isostructural dimers, M 2 (OH) 2 (XO 4 – ) 6 (H 2 O) 6 • 3H 2 O (M=Zr/Hf IV ; X=Re/Tc VII ), elucidated by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. We used these model compounds to understand the pervasive 93 Zr- 99 Tc coextraction with further speciation studies in water, nitric acid, and tetrabutylphosphate (TBP) -kerosene; where the latter two media are relevant to nuclear fuel reprocessing. SAXS (small angle X-ray scattering), compositional evaluation, and where experimentally feasible, ESI-MS (electrospray ionization mass spectrometry) showed that perrhenate/pertechnetate influence Zr/Hf IV -speciation in water. Here, in Zr-XO 4 solvent extraction studies to simulate fuel reprocessing, we provide evidence that TcO 4 – enhances extraction of Zr IV , and compositional analysis of the extracted metal-complexes (Zr-ReO 4 study) is consistent with the crystallized Zr IV 2 (OH) 2 (Re VII O 4 – ) 6 (H 2 O) 6 •dimer.

New Phosphoranylideneketenes and Phosphoranylidenethioketenes‐Synthesis, Structure, Spectroscopy, and Lewis Base Properties

Posphoranylideneketene Ph 3 PCCO and its sulfur analogue, Ph 3 PCCS, are cumulated ylides that exhibit diverse reactivity and distinct structural features. Herein, we present the first systematic study of substituent effects on the structures and bonding of a series of aryl- and alkyl-substituted phosphoranylideneketenes, R 3 PCCO [R = Et, cyclohexyl, NMe 2 , 4-Me 2 N-C 6 H 4 , 4-MeO-C 6 H 4 , 4-CF 3 -C 6 H 4 , 3,5-(CF 3 ) 2 -C 6 H 3 ], prepared from the corresponding phosphonium salts, [R 3 PCH 2 COOEt]X (X = Br, I) and two equivalents of Na[N(SiMe 3 ) 2 ]. Multinuclear NMR and IR spectroscopy, supported by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, revealed that the bond strength within the central P═C═C═O fragment increases with the electron-deficiency of the aryl substituents at phosphorus. The corresponding phosphoranylidenethioketenes, R 3 PCCS (R = Et, cyclohexyl, NMe 2 , 4-Me 2 N-C 6 H 4 , 4-MeO-C 6 H 4 , 4-CF 3 -C 6 H 4 ), were obtained by reactions of R 3 PCCO with CS 2 . Here, the rate of conversion of R 3 PCCO into R 3 PCCS decreases with increasing electron deficiency at phosphorus. Both R 3 PCCO and R 3 PCCS act as relatively weak ambidentate Lewis donors, yet they form stable acid-base adducts with strong Lewis acids such as B(C 6 F 5 ) 3 and Al(C 6 F 5 ) 3 .

Electron-Deficient Phenazines: Synthesis, Structures, Redox, and Optoelectronic Properties in the Gas Phase, in Solution, and in the Solid State

High-temperature gas-phase reactions of 1,4-C4F8I2 with phenazine (PHNZ) afforded new thermally- and air-stable derivatives with cyclo-C4F8 substituents, viz. 1,2-PHNZ(C4F8), 2,3-PHNZ(C4F8), 1,2:6,7-PHNZ(C4F8)2, 1,2:7,8-PHNZ(C4F8)2, and 1,2:8,9-PHNZ(C4F8)2. Reactions in the presence of Cu powder resulted in reductive-defluorination/aromatization of some of the cyclo-C4F8 substituents to produce 2,3-PHNZ(C4F4), 2,3-PHNZ(C4HF3), and 1,2:6,7-PHNZ(C4F8)(C4F4), which are formally tri- or tetrafluoro derivatives of benzo[a]phenazine. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction structures of these compounds demonstrate the planarity of 2,3-PHNZ(C4F4) and 2,3-PHNZ(C4HF3) and ordered p-stacking in 1,2-PHNZ(C4HF3), 1,2-PHNZ(C4F4), 1,2-PHNZ(C4F8), and 2,3-PHNZ(C4F8). Low-temperature gas-phase photoelectron spectra of the PHNZ(C4F8)1,2 compounds show that they are strong electron acceptors, with the three PHNZ(C4F8)2 isomers having electron affinities exceeding that of C60. Cyclic voltammetry in acetonitrile show that the five PHNZ(C4F8)1,2 compounds exhibit reversible one-electron reductions with large positive shifts in their reduction potentials relative to unsubstituted PHNZ. Spectroelectrochemical absorption and EPR spectra of PHNZ(C4F8)1,2- • anion radicals and extensive DFT calculations revealed the significant role that the different substitution patterns have on determining the optoelectronic properties of the PHNZ(C4F8)1,2 derivatives and PHNZ(C4F8)1,2- • anion radicals. Time-resolved microwave conductivity measurements and photoluminescence spectra of blends of the PHNZ(C4F8)1,2 derivatives with the donor poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) were recorded to assess the possible use of the new compounds in optoelectronic devices.

Structural, Electronic, and Photophysical Insights into a Few Atom Copper-Sulfur Cluster in the Solid and Solution States

Coinage-metal chalcogenide clusters are widely studied for their attractive photoluminescence properties. Copper chalcogenides are especially promising, but are often confined to solid-state investigations due to their limited solution stability and the difficulty of synthesizing stable, well-defined clusters. Here, we investigate copper–sulfur clusters incorporating a small number of Cu atoms to elucidate fundamental atomic interactions, ground- and excited-state characteristics, and photophysical behavior in both solid and solution. We have synthesized the Cu6(4,6-dimethyl-2-mercaptopyrimidine)6 cluster in both neutral and charged states, Cu6 and Cu6-2H2+, respectively, by selective ligand protonation. The molecular structures are determined using single-crystal X-ray diffraction, while Cu K-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy is used to probe Cu electronic structure differences arising from the ligand modification. Steady-state and pump-probe optical spectroscopy is used to investigate photophysical properties, interpreted using density functional theory methods. Both clusters exhibit good stability in the solid state and in solution and show characteristic near-infrared emission with microsecond lifetimes. Overall, the Cu6S6 clusters display favorable charge–transfer characteristics and show potential for further use in driving photochemical transformations.

Phase Transitions in Tetramethylammonium Hexachlorometalate Compounds (TMA) 2 MCl 6 (M = U, Np, Pt, Sn, Hf, Zr)

A study of the phase transitions occurring in tetramethylammonium hexachlorometalate compounds with M = U IV , Np IV , Zr IV , Sn IV , Hf IV and Pt IV were performed using single-crystal X-ray diffraction across the temperature range 120 - 400K. When the crystals were cooled, movement of the octahedral [MCl 6 ] 2- anions induces a phase transition from Fm3m to Fd3c with a doubling of the unit cell. For the actinide compounds, no correlation between the f-electron configuration and the transition temperature was observed, instead, a correlation between the transition temperatures and both the [MCl 6 ] 2- anion and the TMA cation size is highlighted. Two phase transitions were observed and characterized. The first phase transition occurs with the ordering of the TMA cation and the second from a rotation of the [MCl 6 ] 2- octahedra. A third phase transition was observed at lower temperatures and was ascribed to a tetragonal distortion of the [MCl 6 ] 2- anions. Synthesis and study of their deuterated compounds did not show a significant isotope effect. As a result, Raman spectra performed on the protonated and deuterated compounds indicate only weak hydrogen bonding interactions between the TMA cations and the [MCl 6 ] 2- octahedra.

Uncovering Multiple Metal-Metal Bonding in a Tetranuclear Fluoride Rhenium Cluster or the Curious Case of {[Ni(H 2 O) 6 ](NH 4 ) 4 }[Re 4 F 18 ]·4H 2 O

The compound {[Ni(H 2 O) 6 ](NH 4 ) 4 }[Re 4 F 18 ]·4H 2 O (1) has been isolated and characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy and computational methods. The compound 1 crystallizes in the triclinic space group P 1 (a = 6.6620(9) Å, b = 9.7121(13) Å, c = 11.2007(15) Å, α = 67.644(2)°, β = 83.827(2)°, γ = 84.366(2)°). In 1, the [Re 4 F 18 ] 6– anion is composed of four Re(III) atoms bridged by two µ-bridging fluorine atoms and two di-µ-bridging fluorine atoms. Furthermore, in [Re 4 F 18 ] 6– , the shortest Re–Re distance (i.e., 2.3631(6) Å) is characteristic of the presence of a Re=Re double bond; the Re–F distances range from 1.854(6) to 2.008(5) Å. Theoretical calculations confirm the presence of a weak Re=Re double bond; the Mayer–Mulliken bond order of the doubly bridged Re atoms is 1.8097 and the natural localized molecular orbital bond order is 1.8751. The Raman spectrum of 1 has been measured and shows a series of bands in the region 167–1449 cm –1 that have been attributed to Re–F and Ni–O stretches, Re 4 F 18 ring breathing and NH 4 + bending and libration modes.

Synthesis and Characterization of Homoleptic Rare Earth Nitrato Complexes with the Quaternary Ammonium Cations Et 4 N + and n Pr 4 N +

Two periodic series of homoleptic rare earth nitrato com plexes, [R 4 N] x [M(NO 3 ) y ](M = La-Nd, Sm-Lu, Y); R = Et, $n$ Pr; x = 2-3; y = 5-6) have been synthesized, and charac terized by single crystal X-ray diffraction, IR and Raman spectroscopy, comparing the solid state speciation of the nitrate ions as a function of lanthanide ion and quarternary ammonium cation. The series of the form [Et 4 N] 3 [Ln(NO 3 ) 6 ] crystallizes in the rhombohedral space group $R$$\bar{3}$, as a twelve-coordinate hexanitrato complex [Et 4 N] 3 [Ln(NO 3 ) 6 ] with cocrystallized HNO 3 for La, Pr, and Nd. For Ce, a distinct orthorhombic phase retaining the same formula, [Et 4 N] 3 [Ce(NO 3 ) 6 ] is isolated in the absence of HNO 3 to prevent oxidation of the Ce(III) to Ce(IV) in nitric acid. A ten-coordinate pentanitrato complex, [Et 4 N] 2 [Ln(NO 3 ) 5 ], in monoclinic symmetry forms for the remainder of the series, and for Y(III). The entire series crystallized in the presence of [ $n$ Pr 4 N] + counterions forms a pentanitrato complex [ $n$ Pr 4 N] 2 [M(NO 3 ) 5 ] in the orthorhombic space group, $Pccn$. In conclusion, analysis of trends in the structural and spectroscopic characteristics of these series reveal insight into the structure directing influences of both the lanthanide contraction and the quarternary ammonium cations.

Porous Salts as Platforms for Heterogeneous Catalysis

In this study, the preparation of a new class of reactive porous solids, prepared via straightforward salt metathesis reactions, is described here. Reaction of the dimethylammonium salt of a magnesium-based porous coordination cage with the chloride salt of [Cr II Cl(Me 4 cyclam)] + affords a porous solid with concomitant removal of dimethylammonium chloride. The salt consists of the ions combined in the expected ratio based on their charge as confirmed by UV–vis and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopies, ion chromatography (IC), and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). The porous salt boasts a Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface area of 213 m 2 g -1 . Single crystal X-ray diffraction reveals the chromium(II) cations in the structure reside in the interstitial space between porous cages. Importantly, the chromium(II) centers, previously shown to react with O 2 to afford reactive chromium(III)-superoxide adducts, are still accessible in the solid state as confirmed by UV–vis spectroscopy. The site-isolated reactive centers have competence toward hydrogen atom abstraction chemistry and display significantly increased stability and reactivity as compared to dissolved ions.

Crystal Chemistry of RE 6 Mg x Cd 23- x Pb [0.6(1) ≤ x ≤ 3.2(1); RE = La and Ce]. New Mixed-Metal Derivatives of the RE 6 Cd 23 T Phases ( T = Group 14/15/16 Element)

Synthesis and crystal structure determinations are reported for six quaternary phases with the general formula RE 6 Mg x Cd 23-x Pb [RE = La, Ce; 0.6(1) ≤ x ≤ 3.2(1)]. These compounds were prepared by high temperature reaction of the elements in sealed Nb tubes. As revealed by powder and single-crystal X-ray diffraction, their crystal structures are of the cubic Zr 6 Zn 23 Si system (cF120, Fm 3 m, Z = 4), itself an interstitially filled variant of the Th 6 Mn 23 structure type. Finally, rather than distributing equally across the entire Cd 23 sub-lattice, Mg displayed a tendency to accumulate at specific sites (most notably 4a); charge differences between sites within the sub-lattice, as revealed by computational methods, are the likeliest explanation.

Framework Polymorphism and Modular Crystal Structures of Uranyl Vanadates of Divalent Cations: Synthesis and Characterization of M (UO 2 )(V 2 O 7 ) ( M = Ca, Sr) and Sr 3 (UO 2 )(V 2 O 7 ) 2

In this work, Uranyl vanadate compounds with divalent cations, M (UO 2 )(V 2 O 7 ) ( M = Ca, Sr) and Sr 3 (UO 2 )(V 2 O 7 ) 2 , were synthesized by flux crystal growth, and their crystal structures were solved using single-crystal X-ray diffraction data. Ca(UO 2 )V 2 O 7 and Sr(UO 2 )V 2 O 7 were synthesized from reactants with molar ratios M:U:V of 1:1:2 and identical heating conditions, and increasing the M:U:V ratio to 3:1:4 resulted in Sr 3 (UO 2 )(V 2 O 7 ) 2 . Crystallographic data for M(UO2)V2O7 compounds are: a = 7.1774(18) Å, b = 6.7753(17) Å, c = 8.308(2) Å; V = 404.01(18) Å 3 ; space group Pmn2 1 , Z = 2 for Ca; a = 13.4816(11) Å, b = 7.3218(6) Å, c = 8.4886(7) Å; V = 837.91(12) Å3; space group Pnma , Z = 4 for Sr. Compound Sr 3 (UO 2 )(V 2 O 7 ) 2 has a = 6.891(3) Å, b = 7.171(3) Å, c = 14.696(6) Å, α = 85.201(4)°, β = 78.003(4)°, γ = 89.188(4)°; V = 707.9(5) Å 3 ; space group P1, Z = 2. The framework structure of Sr(UO 2 )(V 2 O 7 ) is related to that of Pb(UO 2 )(V 2 O 7 ) reported previously, while that of Ca(UO 2 )(V 2 O 7 ) has a different topology. The topological polymorphism of the [(UO 2 )(V 2 O 7 )]-type framework may be due to the differing ionic radii of the guest M 2+ cations. Compound Sr 3 (UO 2 )(V 2 O 7 ) 2 has a modular structure based on two different types of electroneutral layers: [Sr(UO 2 )(V 2 O 7 )] and [Sr 2 (V 2 O 7 )]. This report calculated Structural complexities, and Raman spectra were collected and their peaks were assigned.

Crystal and electronic structure of the ternary Zintl bismuthide BaLiBi

Reported is the accurate refinement of the structure of the ternary bismuthide BaLiBi, based on single-crystal X-ray diffraction data. This compound crystallizes with the ZrBeSi structure type with the space group P6 3 /mmc (no. 194), a=4.9917(6) Å, c=9.079(2) Å, V=195.92(7) Å 3 with two formula units per unit cell. In addition to being a colored ternary variant of the AlB 2 type, the crystal structure of BaLiBi can be also viewed as a “stuffed” variant of the NiAs structure, where the Bi atoms form a hexagonal close packing, the Ba atoms occupy the octahedral voids in this packing, and the Li atoms are located between adjacent tetrahedral voids on their common triangular faces. Furthermore, in the absence of direct Bi–Bi interactions, the BaLiBi crystal structure rationalized according to the notation (Ba 2+ )(Li + )(Bi 3− ), suggesting an electron-balanced composition, i. e., a Zintl phase. In line with this notation, scalar-relativistic first-principle calculations with the LMTO code reveal a semiconducting ground state, with a bandgap of about 0.6 eV. Fully relativistic electronic structure calculations predict a semimetallic ground state.

High-pressure crystal structure and equation of state of ferromagnesian jeffbenite: implications for stability in the transition zone and uppermost lower mantle

Jeffbenite, ideally Mg 3 Al 2 Si 3 O 12 , has been identified as inclusions in super-deep diamonds originating from depths that exceed 300 km. Although Mg-end member jeffbenite has limited stability at upper-mantle conditions, iron-bearing jeffbenite may have broader P–T stability that extends to the transition zone or uppermost lower mantle, incorporating significant amounts of ferric iron. Using synchrotron-based, single-crystal X-ray diffraction (XRD) and synchrotron Mössbauer spectroscopy (SMS) at pressures up to 29 GPa, we report the crystal structure, compressibility, and likely spin transition of iron in ferromagnesian jeffbenite (Mg 2.32 Al 0.03 Fe 2+ 1.28 Fe 3+ 1.77 Si 2.85 O 12 ). High-pressure structure refinements reveal that Fe 3+ substitution for Si in the T2 site, which shares edges with the M2 octahedron, likely stabilizes jeffbenite at high pressure, because it increases the cation-to-cation distance between these sites. Although ferromagnesian jeffbenite does not undergo a structural phase transition below 30 GPa, SMS hyperfine parameters suggest the onset of an electronic spin transition of iron from high-spin (HS) to low-spin (LS) at around 22 GPa, which may increase its stability at high pressures. Pressure–volume data were fit to a third order Birch–Murnaghan equation of state, resulting in V o = 816.54(9), K To = 181.54(1.39), and K' T0 = 2.76(14). These equation of state parameters are applicable to evaluating the encapsulation pressures of super-deep diamonds. The density and bulk modulus of ferromagnesian jeffbenite are similar to or higher than pyrope–almandine, pyrope–majorite, and skiagite–majorite solid solution garnets, further suggesting that jeffbenite may be an important ferric–iron silicate in the deeper parts of the mantle transition zone and uppermost lower mantle. Furthermore, future studies on the influence of temperature and oxidation state on the stability and equations of state of iron-bearing jeffbennite are still needed to determine what role, if any, jeffbenite plays in transition-zone mineralogy.

Aluminum hydrides with radical-anionic and dianionic acenaphthene-1,2-diimine ligands

The reaction of 1,2-bis[(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)imino]acenaphthene (dpp-bian) with LiAlH{sub 4} affords two products regardless of the solvent used (tetrahydrofuran or diethyl ether). These products were isolated as green and colorless crystals. Green crystals of the complex [(dpp-bian)Al(H){sub 2}Li(THF){sub 3}] (1) were obtained from tetrahydrofuran; colorless crystals of the complex [{dpp-bian(H_2)}Al(H){sub 2}Li(Et{sub 2}O){sub 2}] (2), from diethyl ether. According to the single-crystal X-ray diffraction data, both compounds are built up by the trinuclear carboxylate units {Cd_3(O_2CR)_6}. Compound 1 has a layered structure, whereas compound 2 has a three-dimensional structure due to the presence of additional coordination interactions between adjacent trinuclear units and the formation of polymer chains {Cd_3(dmf)_2(μ_2-O_2CR-κ"1,κ"1)_2(μ_2-O_2CR-κ"2,κ"1)_4(O_2CR-κ"1)2}. The synthesized compounds were characterized by IR spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, elemental analysis, and powder X-ray diffrac- tion. The luminescence properties of these compounds provide evidence for the existence of both intraligand and charge-transfer transitions. The luminescence quantum yields for both compounds are 10%.
