Partnerships ensure a strong Laboratory and support our missions. Partnerships are critical to our success as a Laboratory: community relations, colleges and universities and technical communities, regional and national economic development through industrial partners, DOE Laboratories, and other federal agencies. The Laboratory has many tools to build and enhance partnerships. The Community Programs Office in our Northern New Mexico Region has K-12 educational programs, supports teacher professional development and retention in regional elementary, middle and high schools, and provides community college engagement. The Partnerships and Pipeline Office works with the National Security Education Center (NSEC) which has broad university engagement including New Mexico universities. The Feynman Center for Innovation is involved in 'tech transfer' to innovation asset stewardship. The External Assignments Office shares LANL's technical expertise. The Student and Postdoc Program Offices build our workforce of the future.
We seek to improve our ability to predict and understand the Richtmyer-Meshkov (RM) unstable dynamics of explosively shocked isolated features interfaced with vacuum or gases, and an HE products cavity. Explosively shocked features form as 2D or 3D RM phenomena. Liquid cavitation cause cavitation bubbles when shockwaves collide, and cavitation waves from wave interactions with isolated features form that source mass into the RM unstable sheets or spikes, and the cavitation waves may slice through bulk material into the HE products cavity.
This project aims at an improved understanding of non-hydrostatic dynamics in atmospheric modeling using the DOE’s next generation climate model. One aspect that we have been focusing on is baroclinic instability which is closely related to mid-latitude cyclone genesis. The other aspect that we recently developed is E3SM simulations under Radiative-Convective Equilibrium (RCE), a prototype of tropical climate.

The oil & natural gas (ONG) system like any other heavy industrial process, relies on a complex system of information technology (IT) and operational technology (OT) devices. Cyber-preparedness varies across the ONG industry from organization to organization. Common challenges include remote locations, long-lived field assets, and insufficient capabilities to find and track malware. ONG companies tend to be concerned with lack of cyber-awareness from employees, risk stemming from remote access for operations & maintenance, and software vulnerabilities within third-party equipment. For a variety of reasons, the general consensus from stakeholders interviewed by LLNL is that the state of cybersecurity within the electric grid is currently outpacing its ONG cousin. Existing strategies for the resilience and cybersecurity of the electric grid can and should be leveraged to provide immediate benefits to the ONG system. In LLNL’s view, there are two key factors currently limiting the development of necessary cyber-practices within the ONG industry: regulatory overlap and inefficiencies, and lack of industry awareness of potentially useful technologies for solving known issues. In the months following this report, LLNL will develop a cyber-resilience roadmap for the oil & gas pipeline sector, coupling threat intelligence, industry knowledge base, and ongoing outreach

What is a FTWC? Flanged Tritium Waste Containers (FTWC) are designed to hold tritium contaminated waste. The tritium contaminated waste is in secondary containers such as plastic bags and paint cans. Tritium is a gas that is lighter than air. Hydrogen gas is lighter-than-air. Hydrogen gas forms explosive mixtures with air from 4% concentration to 75% concentration. Tritium gas has a Biological ½ life = 10 – 12 days. It is a beta particle emitter. Exposure can occur by inhalation or by skin adsorption.
The outline for this presentation includes the history, World War II legacy, and current mission of Los Alamos National Laboratory; detonator manufacturing in the Nuclear Security Enterprise; manufacturing processes; and expanding the supply chain.

Scorpius will provide (DARHT scale) flash-radiography of dynamic nuclear material. DARHT radiographs non-nuclear (surrogate) materials at a cadence of 8 to 10 hydrodynamic shots per year. Scorpius will radiograph nuclear material at an initial cadence of about 2 to 3 subcritical shots per year in a more challenging environment. Both machines are Linear Induction Accelerators (LIAs) and generate X-rays with high-current, relativistic electron beams. Their use is termed Flash-Radiography.
