Thermal-Structural Evaluation of TD Ni-20Cr Thermal Protection System Panels

The results of a thermal-structural test program to verify the performance of a metallic/radiative Thermal Protection System (TPS) under reentry conditions are presented. This TPS panel is suitable for multiple reentry, high L/D space vehicles, such as the NASA space shuttle, having surface temperatures up to 1200 C (2200 F). The TPS panel tested consists of a corrugation-stiffened, beaded-skin TD Ni-20Cr metallic heat shield backed by a flexible fibrous quartz and radiative shield insulative system. Test conditions simulated the critical heating and aerodynamic pressure environments expected during 100 repeated missions of a reentry vehicle. Temperatures were measured during each reentry cycle; heat-shield flatness surveys to measure permanent set of the metallic components were made every 10 cycles. The TPS panel, in spite of localized surface failures, performed its designated function.

A discussion of Sortie Lab structural subsystem trade studies

The first trade study discussed is a structural sizing and resultant weight comparison between a 3.66 m diameter and a 3.94 m diameter pressurized shell. Results of this trade are presented, indicating the structural areas of weight reduction and growth. The orbiter payload support techniques are discussed, evaluating the advantages and disadvantages. A comparison of various techniques using the system is presented, along with resulting weight comparisons. A preliminary assessment of Sortie Lab natural frequencies and mode shapes is also presented and discussed. In conclusion, an assessment of the Sortie Lab weight related to structural design factor of safety and a discussion of a possible structural test program associated with increased design factors of safety is presented.

Studies of silicon PN junction solar cells

Silicon pn junction solar cells made with low-resistivity substrates show poorer performance than traditional theory predicts. The purpose of this research was to identify and characterize the physical mechanisms responsible for the discrepancy. Attention was concentrated on the open circuit voltage in shallow junction cells of 0.1 ohm-cm substrate resistivity. A number of possible mechanisms that can occur in silicon devices were considered. Two mechanisms which are likely to be of main importance in explaining the observed low values of open-circuit voltage were found: (1) recombination losses associated with defects introduced during junction formation, and (2) inhomogeneity of defects and impurities across the area of the cell. To explore these theoretical anticipations, various diode test structures were designed and fabricated and measurement configurations for characterizing the defect properties and the areal inhomogeneity were constructed.

The Nike-Black Brant V development program

The Nike-Black Brant V represents a combined U.S.-Canadian program to achieve a 40 percent increase in apogee performance over that of the unboosted BBV, with minimum component modification and no meaningful increase in flight environment levels. The process of achieving these objectives is described, in particular optimization of sustainer coast period and roll history, and the techniques used to ensure good stage separation. Details of the structural test program and subsequent successful vehicle proving flight are provided. Basic performance data are preented, with an indication of the further potential offered by Terrier boost.

Ultra high tip speed (670.6 m/sec) fan stage with composite rotor: Aerodynamic and mechanical design

A highly loaded, single-stage compressor having a tip speed of 670.6 m/sec was designed for the purpose of investigating very high tip speeds and high aerodynamic loadings to obtain high stage pressure ratios at acceptable levels of efficiency. The design pressure ratio is 2.8 at an adiabatic efficiency of 84.4%. Corrected design flow is 83.4 kg/sec; corrected design speed is 15,200 rpm; and rotor inlet tip diameter is 0.853 m. The rotor uses multiple-circular-arc airfoils from 0 to 15% span, precompression airfoils assuming single, strong oblique shocks from 21 to 43% span, and precompression airfoils assuming multiple oblique shocks from 52% span to the tip. Because of the high tip speeds, the rotor blades are designed to be fabricated of composite materials. Two composite materials were investigated: Courtaulds HTS graphite fiber in a Kerimid 601 polyimide matrix and the same fibers in a PMR polyimide matrix. In addition to providing a description of the aerodynamic and mechanical design of the 670.0 m/sec fan, discussion is presented of the results of structural tests of blades fabricated with both types of matrices.

Load control system

The load control system developed for the shuttle external structural tests is described. The system consists of a load programming/display module, and a load control module along with the following hydraulic system components: servo valves, dump valves, hydraulic system components, and servo valve manifold blocks. One load programming/display subsystem can support multiple load control subsystem modules.

A 3-D hydroelastic analysis in NASTRAN with general fluid and structure geometry

The implementation of a general three dimensional hydroelastic mode analysis capability in NASTRAN is presented. Finite elements with polyhedral shapes define the fluid; existing NASTRAN plate elements define the fluid/structure interface. Efficient solution methods were implemented to allow a separate structural matrix reduction and to allow connection of the fluid mass directly to a small set of grid points or modal coordinates representing the structure. Test case results for the various solution options are presented.

Toward a laminar-flow-control transport

Analyses were conducted to define a practical design for an advanced technology laminar flow control (LRC) transport for initial passenger operation in the early 1990's. Mission requirements, appropriate design criteria, and level of technology for the study aircraft were defined. The characteristics of the selected configuration were established, aircraft and LFC subsystems compatible with the mission requirements were defined, and the aircraft was evaluated in terms of fuel efficiency. A wing design integrating the LFC ducting and metering system into advanced composite wing structure was developed, manufacturing procedures for the surface panel design were established, and environmental and structural testing of surface panel components were conducted. Test results revealed a requirement for relatively minor changes in the manufacturing procedures employed, but have shown the general compatibility of both the selected design and the use of composite materials with the requirements of LFC wing surface panels.

Apparatus for measuring semiconductor device resistance

A test structure is described for enabling the accurate measurement of the resistance characteristics of a semiconductor material and includes one or more pairs of electrical terminals disposed on the surface of the material to enable measurements of the resistance encountered by currents passed between the terminals. A pair of terminals includes a first terminal extending in a closed path, such as a circle, around a second terminal, so that all currents flowing between the terminals flow along a region of known width and length. Two or more pairs of concentric terminals can be utilized, wherein the ratio of radii of each pair of terminals is the same as the ratio for all other pairs of terminals, to facilitate the calculation of the contact resistance between each terminal and the semiconductor surface, as well as the calculation of the resistance of the semiconductor material apart from the effect of the terminal to semiconductor contact resistances.
