The Building Science Advisor: A Web-Based Tool to Assess the Durability of Building Envelope Components

The Department of Energy (DOE) and Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) have developed an innovative new design tool that will put building science expert advice in the hands of every building designer who cares to manage moisture risk in high-R envelope components. As modern buildings become increasingly more airtight, constructed with modern labor-saving materials, and equipped with air-conditioning, they have become less forgiving to moisture intrusion. The Building Science Advisor (BSA) provides building science knowledge and advice based on expert experience, field measurements, laboratory tests, and computer simulations.BSA users are prompted to enter relevant information about the building location, design, and material selection options like cladding, structural system, and insulation. Influential factors such as climate, building air tightness, material properties, and internal moisture loads are also considered to estimate and compare the moisture durability performance of several design options. If the BSA deems the assembly’s performance unsatisfactory, it will provide the reasons why, and suggest necessary changes to wall design to ensure more robust performance.Using the BSA tool enables building designers to confidently select assembly design characteristics that achieve their design goals with the least moisture durability risk. Links to design-specific guidance are also be provided to help users manage any remaining risk. This tool will further enable DOE’s Building Technologies Office (BTO) to meet its long-term energy goal of a 50% reduction in building energy consumption by reducing builder concern about using highly energy efficient wall systems.

KM-IT Mobile Platform for D and D - 18300

Knowledge management (KM) is the practice or process responsible for gathering, analyzing, storing and sharing insights, experiences, knowledge, and information within an organization or community. The main focus of the Knowledge Management Information Tool (KM-IT) for the deactivation and decommissioning (D and D) community is to enhance safety through improved efficiencies (e.g., by reducing the need to rediscover the knowledge and experience gained over time and to promote the reuse of the existing knowledge). KM-IT serves as a centralized information repository and a common interface for D and D related activities. It facilitates the gathering, analysis, storage and sharing of knowledge and information within the D and D community. FIU has developed eight active modules as part of the web-based mobile application for the KM-IT, which can be accessed from m.dndkm.org: Vendor, Specialist Directory, Technology, Picture Library, Hotline, Lessons Learned, Best Practices and Fixatives. All of the mobile modules are scaled-down versions of the desktop module available at www.dndkm.org and publish data from the KM-IT database to the D and D community. FIU has recently developed a native mobile application for Android mobile devices for selecting D and D fixatives. This application runs natively on mobile devices and displays data through the fixative services which uses REST-based API for communication across mobile platforms. Xamarin Forms are used to develop the front-end application for the Android operating system (OS) and will be used for future platforms (iOS and Windows) as well. The native fixative application can be installed on mobile devices to search information related to fixatives, decontamination gels and strippable coatings applicable to D and D. The KM-IT platform includes a comprehensive database of commercially available fixatives and other contamination control products. Search functionality allows the user to filter and sort these products according to the search criteria or keyword. Three levels of refinement are available via a drill down menu for the criteria. Web-based Preprocessing and Visualization of 3D FIB Tomography Data for Nuclear Fuel Characterization

Three-dimensional (3D) focused ion beam (FIB) tomography enables reconstruction of internal nuclear fuel features that can't be fully evaluated through surface imaging alone. This capability supports characterization of fuel constituents and defects under thermal and irradiation conditions relevant to microreactor development. However, large tomography datasets can create data-handling, loading, and visualization challenges, especially when image-stack preparation and file conversion must be completed with separate tools. The Computational Ultraspatial Tomography Toolkit for High-Resolution Object Analysis Tools (CUTTRHOAT) is an open-source web application being developed to display FIB tomography datasets available through the Nuclear Research Data System (NRDS). The current alpha version requires prepared HDF5 datasets and has limited integrated data-preparation capabilities. This project improves CUTTHROAT by adding dataset-folder selection, automatic input detection, dataset scanning, missing-slice identification, blank-slice insertion, and image-stack-to-HDF5 conversion. Two applications will be compared: the baseline CUTTHROAT alpha workflow and the updated application containing the integrated data-handling and preprocessing functions. Evaluation will consider dataset detection accuracy, conversion success, loading time, rendering responsiveness, application stability, and user interaction. Preliminary results demonstrate successful loading of existing HDF5 files and converted image stacks, while testing also identified performance reductions caused by excessive blank-slice generation. The updated workflow reduces reliance on external preparation tools and supports more direct movement from image stacks to color-code 3D visualization. Future work includes refining missing-slice handling, integrating additional preprocessing functions, like a denoising feature, parsing TIFF metadata for automatic voxel scaling, and adding manual X, Y, and Z voxel-spacing inputs for PNG and JPEG.
