Resolving the fast ion distribution from imaging neutral particle analyzer measurements

A recently developed imaging neutral particle analyzer (INPA) on the DIII-D tokamak (Du 2018 Nucl. Fusion 58 082006) enables fast ion velocity-space tomography of high fidelity at the interrogated phase space. To accomplish this, the spatial and energy depending fast ( E < 80 keV) neutral flux towards the INPA stripping foils is calculated with FIDASIM and a newly developed code INPASIM simulates the INPA instrumental response to this neutral flux. Included in INPASIM is the neutral-foil interaction, the Larmor orbit tracing between the foil and the phosphor, the phosphor response to the incident ion flux as well as camera focusing. Benefiting from heavy, localized velocity-space weights and excellent signal to noise, computed tomography using the Ridge regression method is able to successfully reconstruct fine-scale velocity-space structures produced by multiple neutral beams separated by as small as ~3 keV in tests. Applying the inversion method to a sawtooth crash event reveals a significant profile flattening of confined passing particles across q = 1 flux surface, as well as a redistribution of fast ions into the trapped orbits at the plasma edge close to the last closed flux surface.

A Study of Low-Temperature Neutron Star Atmospheres

We present a study of how a low-temperature accreted atmosphere influences the emitted X-ray spectrum of a neutron star. The atmosphere models and spectra were computed with Zcode, a multigroup radiation transfer code developed at the Los Alamos National Laboratory. Though the underlying hot neutron star behaves as a blackbody, the atmosphere shifts the peak of spectrum away from a blackbody and toward higher energies, producing an emitted spectrum similar to a dilute blackbody. Quantifying the effects of this atmosphere will remove a source of uncertainty in X-ray observations and better constrain the mass-radius relation for neutron stars and thus the equation of state of dense matter. We present a suite of these atmospheres with varying compositions and temperatures as well as the resulting spectra.

Early results in the search for extreme coronal line emitters with the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument

Here, we present the results of our search through the early data release (EDR) of the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) for extreme coronal line emitters (ECLEs) – a rare classification of galaxies displaying strong, high-ionization iron coronal emission lines within their spectra. With the requirement of a strong X-ray continuum to generate the coronal emission, ECLEs have been linked to both active galactic nuclei (AGNs) and tidal disruption events (TDEs). We focus our search on identifying TDE-linked ECLEs. We identify three such objects within the EDR sample, highlighting DESI’s effectiveness for discovering new nuclear transients, and determine a galaxy-normalized TDE-linked ECLE rate of RG=5 −3+5×10−6 galaxy−1 yr−1 at a median redshift of z=0.2 – broadly consistent with previous work. Additionally, we identify more than 200 AGNs displaying coronal emission lines, which serve as the primary astrophysical contaminants in searches for TDE-related events. We also include an outline of the custom python code developed for this search.

MECHANICAL PERFORMANCE EVALUATION OF THE PRINTED CIRCUIT HEAT EXCHANGER CORE EXPERIMENTS UNDER TENSION AND PRESSURE LOADING

The printed circuit heat exchanger (PCHE) has small channels with high surface area, making them an efficient solution for next-generation nuclear plants (NGNPs). These PCHEs are fabricated through a diffusion bonding process. This fabrication step changes the microstructure of wrought metal plates. The current ASME design code does not support the PCHE design for NGNPs due to a lack of test data. Hence, there has been initiative towards elevated temperature mechanical property characterization of the diffusion bonded material. One of the most common channel shapes is a semicircular channel with sharp corners. These corners act as a stress riser at the diffusion bonding interface. Evaluating elevated temperature mechanical performance of diffusion bonded material in the presence of stress risers is an essential step towards the ASME code development of PCHE design. This study selected two specimen geometries: the first is a PCHE bar specimen for tensile loading with three rows and three columns of channels, and the second is a lab-scaled PCHE with six rows and eight columns of channels. A set of elevated temperature monotonic and cyclic tests were conducted on the PCHE bar specimen to evaluate the mechanical performance under axial tensile loadings to study the failure mechanism. The lab-scaled PCHE specimens were tested under overpressure loads at room temperature, and pressure creep and pressure creep-fatigue loadings to mimic the realistic loading conditions observed in typical NGNPs. The X-ray scans of channeled specimens show interesting observations. The test results and observations are presented in the paper.

NEML2 - THE NEW ENGINEERING MATERIAL MODEL LIBRARY, VERSION 2

SF-22-157 NEML2 is an extension of an earlier open source code developed at ANL (SF-xxxx) called NEML. These libraries provide tools for constructing and using models of engineering materials, with a focus on high temperature materials for nuclear reactor applications. The software include tools for setting up material models, calibrating models, storing models for later use in other simulations, and running simple "material point" simulations of the material behavior. The main difference between NEML and NEML2 is the new software has been complete restructured to run on GPUs and other accelerators in order to improve the performance of methods used to train constitutive models against data and to improve the performance of the final models in production environments, like finite element software. While over time we expect NEML2 to become more-or-less feature complete with NEML we are filing a new software disclosure because (1) the library has been complete restructured and (2) we want to host NEML2 in a separate repository.

Electric Grid Simulator For Human Factor Research

The developed code simulates real-time monitor and control for west area of IEEE 118-bus system. The 24-hour load profile for each bus is derived by scaling the system’s rated load in the PSSE sav file according to the California Independent System Operator’s Day-ahead load forecast for May 1, 2024. This simulator performs several critical functions: (1) Calculating time-series power flow every 4 seconds; (2) Updating and dispatching AGC signals every minute; (3) Conducting N-1 contingency analysis every 5 minutes. Additionally, the simulator can trip lines and subsequently update and dispatch AGC signals, running power flow analysis after each tripping event.

Plant Reload Optimization (prlo)

The PRLO framework is built on a modular and extensible architecture that tightly couples advanced evolutionary optimization algorithms with nuclear fuel depletion solvers (i.e., nuclear physics neutronics code). It supports exploring complex, high-dimensional design spaces constrained by user-specified operational, safety, and economic constraints. Objectives such as minimizing fresh fuel enrichment, flattening radial and axial power distributions, and maximizing discharge burnup are evaluated. PRLO’s equilibrium cycle optimization capability enables the identification of core configurations that maintain fuel cycle sustainability over extended planning horizons. Its integration with the RAVEN platform facilitates optimization of loading patterns or fuel shuffling schemes across multiple cycles. The interface with SIMULATE, a licensed industry-standard nodal code developed by Studsvik, ensures accurate neutronic and thermal-hydraulic feedback for reactor core design. PRLO’s automated workflow engine supports iterative design refinement, enabling utilities to streamline core design processes and meet evolving performance and regulatory targets.

Modeling a Hypothetical Fusion Blanket Design Using MELCOR-TMAP

MELCOR (not an acronym) is a nuclear safety code developed by Sandia National Laboratories for the Nuclear Regulatory Commission. Idaho National Laboratory collaborates with Sandia to maintain and develop a version of MELCOR specifically for fusion device applications. Most recently, the tritium migration analysis program (TMAP) has been incorporated into MELCOR for fusion, in a version called MELCOR-TMAP. We show the results applying MELCOR-TMAP to model steady-state inventory and tritium retention in a liquid immersion blanket design for a hypothetical fusion device under steady-state operation.
