The Low-Beta Quadrupoles for the High-Luminosity Large Hadron Collider: enabling higher luminosity by using Nb_3Sn conductor

The large-aperture, high-gradient Low Beta Quadrupoles for the High Luminosity Large Hadron Collider at CERN are the cornerstones of this collider. They are first-of-the-kind accelerator magnets bringing Nb_3Sn conductor to High Energy Physics colliders. In the US they are being fabricated and tested by the HL-LHC Accelerator Upgrade Project (AUP), and in Europe by CERN. The design was developed by AUP and CERN in close collaboration. The Q1/Q3 cryo-assemblies contain two 4.2 m long magnets (MQXFA) fabricated and by AUP. They are tested vertically before use in a cry-assembly. In this paper we are going to present the main features of the MQXFA design, results of vertical tests, and main lessons learned. We will also discuss lessons learned for future use of Nb_3Sn magnets in HEP colliders.

Investigating the Transverse Structure of Hadrons Using Parton Pseudodistributions

Within the pseudo-PDF framework, we investigate the perturbative contributions to correlators that are used to study transverse momentum dependent parton distributions (TMDs) on the lattice. Our results contain the full perturbative corrections which arise as artifacts from performing the calculation for a Euclidean separation between the parton fields, as well as the corrections which yield the evolution equations for the TMDs. This gives a path to extraction of the genuine non-perturbative features of the three-dimensional structure of the hadrons from lattice calculations.

Hadron Storage Ring Transition Crossing for Yellow Only Configuration

The Electron Ion Collider (EIC) Hadron Storage Ring (HSR) has undergone many iterations. This technical note captures the progress made on transition crossing in the HSR studies for the yellow only configuration. Being heavily dependent on the phase advance per cell, the hsr-au-trans-8786phi-071725 optics was used where the phase advances per arc cell are 87°, horizontal and 85°, vertical. These phase advances were chosen to aid in the cancellation of the β and η waves generated during the jump and to minimize the tune shift. The total change in the γ T is 1 unit as prescribed. This technical note will describe the process in which HSR will jump transition with the assumption that longitudinal dynamics will be handled similar to the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC).

Electron-Ion Collider (EIC) Hadron Storage Ring (HSR) Injection Transport Beamline (Y-Line Ext.) Lattice Design and Magnet Parameters

The preliminary design of the Electron-Ion Collider (EIC) Hadron Storage Ring (HSR) Normal Conducting Injection Beamline ( Y-Line Ext. ) lattice is discussed. The preliminary design includes the periodic cells, matching sections, state of the art Twiss parameters at the HSR injection, the magnet parameters and first order instrumentation placement. Furthermore, the beamline parameters, element coordinates, and other information are discussed. The names of the HSR Injection Beamline elements used in this technical report ( i.e. HD1, HQ1 ) are preliminary and not the official site wide names.

Snakes for the Hadron Storage Ring

The Electron Ion Collider calls for collisions of polarized proton and polarized helion beams on polarized electron beams. To preserve polarization of these polarized hadron beams during acceleration, six full helical snakes will be installed. As there are currently 4 snakes in RHIC, the remaining two snakes will be made from existing rotator magnet coils. The existing snakes are made from only right-handed helices where the rotator magnets are made from both right handed and left handed helicity magnets. In order for a sufficient stock of spare coils, one snake will be made of left handed coils. Simulations using Opera field maps in zgoubi show the left handed snake has sufficient range to provide the desired snake precession axes for helions and protons with the existing power supplies. This is an overview of the right and left handed snake assemblies and their effects.

Single-Bunch Instabilities Driven by Space Charge During Low-Energy Cooling at Injection in the EIC Hadron Storage Ring

This paper presents a simulation-based study of single-bunch dynamics at the injection energy of 23.8 GeV for protons in the EIC hadron storage ring, focusing on the impact of space-charge–driven instabilities. The analysis demonstrates that at this energy, the proton bunch experiences significant transverse space-charge forces, which can reduce the stability margin in the presence of the geometric and resistive wall impedance. Various collective effects were considered, with particular attention to the nonlinear nature of the transverse space charge. To stabilize the beam, high chromaticity and octupoles were introduced and their effects analyzed using the ELEGANT code. The results provide a quantitative assessment of the stability thresholds and offer guidance for the machine design and operational strategy at injection.

Study of Quadrupole Fringe Fields in the Interaction Region of the Hadron Storage Ring of the Electron Ion Collider

Fringe fields in quadrupole magnets are usually neglected in studies of beam dynamics at accelerators. However, the extreme optical parameters present in the final focus of a collider such as the Electron–Ion Collider (EIC) may give rise to effects that should not be overlooked. The calculation of quadrupole fringe fields presented in this study follows the procedure outlined in Ref. [1], specialized to the case of a straight reference orbit (i.e., with no dipole field component). A right-handed Cartesian coordinate system is employed, with the $z$-axis aligned with the quadrupole axis and $x$ and $y$ denoting the horizontal and vertical transverse coordinates, respectively. The magnetic quadrupole field gradient, $G = \partial B_y / \partial x$, transitions from its peak value inside the quadrupole—where it is nearly independent of the longitudinal coordinate $z$—to zero at some distance beyond the magnet edge. Consequently, $G$ is treated as a function of $z$. The region over which this variation occurs is defined as the quadrupole fringe field region. The study begins with the development of a description of the magnetic field in the fringe region using a power-series expansion in the transverse coordinates $x$and $y$, consistent with the longitudinally varying gradient. A model for the $z$-dependence of the gradient is then proposed and adjusted to reproduce magnetic field data obtained from three-dimensional field calculations. To evaluate the impact of the fringe fields on beam dynamics, the corresponding vector potential is derived and incorporated into a Hamiltonian formulation of particle motion. The significance of the fringe fields is quantified by calculating the amplitude-dependent tune shift from the Hamiltonian. Using linear beam optics parameters of the Hadron Storage Ring (HSR) of the EIC, the tune shift due to the fringe fields of all quadrupole magnets in the IR-6 interaction region is evaluated. Finally, the resulting tune shifts are compared with those arising from other nonlinear field components present in the HSR.

Technical Report for Bayesian Optimization and Reinforcement Learning for Beam Polarization Increase in the BNL Hadron Injectors

This project developed and evaluated physics-informed Bayesian learning and machine learning (ML)-based optimization methods for improving beam polarization preservation in the BNL hadron injector chain. The work focused on uncertainty-aware digital twin modeling, Bayesian calibration of accelerator simulations using beam measurements, and data-efficient optimization strategies including Bayesian optimization and reinforcement learning. These methods were applied to injector tuning and RF control problems in realistic accelerator settings to support improved operational robustness and readiness for RHIC operations and future Electron–Ion Collider facilities. No subject inventions were disclosed under this award.

Improving MicroBooNE's Inclusive Single-Photon Search with Low-Energy Hadronic Identification

This analysis aims to further investigate MicroBooNE’s inclusive single-photon search results, which reported a 2.2$\sigma$ excess below 600 MeV in shower energy for events with no reconstructed protons using roughly half of MicroBooNE's dataset. Taken together with MiniBooNE’s long-standing low-energy excess and MicroBooNE’s recent electron-like search results showing no observable excess with respect to Standard Model predictions, this result provides strong impetus for expanded exploration of the single-photon channel in Fermilab’s short-baseline liquid-argon time projection chamber (LArTPC) experiments. By identifying and classifying isolated MeV-scale energy depositions, or blips, in the vicinity of single-photon events selected by the Wire-Cell reconstruction framework, we establish a more comprehensive labeling scheme for nearby hadronic content. In particular, blips found backwards along the shower axis indicate the presence of previously-unidentified final-state protons, while elevated blip counts at wide angles signal the presence of final-state neutrons. By applying this new technique to its full dataset, MicroBooNE will perform a purer and higher-statistics test of the truly isolated nature of its modest photon-like excess, furthering its hunt for the presence of unexpected new physics beyond the Standard Model.

Beam Dynamics of the Strong Hadron Cooler ERL at the Electron-Ion Collider

The Strong Hadron Cooler Energy Recovery Linac (SHC-ERL) for the Electron-Ion Collider (EIC) is required to produce an electron beam with a bunch charge of 1 nC, an average current of 100 mA, and a beam energy of both 150 and 55 MeV, with strict requirements for the transverse emittance, slice energy spread, and longitudinal distribution. This paper covers the design in detail, including preliminary considerations of higher order effects and diagnostics.

Heavy quarkonium production in hadronic collisions in TMD framework

Heavy quarkonium ($\Upsilon$) production at low transverse momentum ($P_\perp$) in high-energy hadronic collisions is revisited from the point of view of transverse momentum dependent (TMD) framework. We perform resummation of double logarithmic correction associated with initial-state soft gluon shower for $b\bar b$ production by employing Collins-Soper-Sterman (CSS) formalism. We show that the CSS formalism provides a nice description of $\Upsilon$ production data in p+$\rm\bar{p}$ collisions at Tevatron and p+p collisions at the LHC.

Disconnected Hadronic Vacuum Polarization Contribution to the Muon g-2 with HISQ

We describe a computation of the contribution to the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon from the disconnected part of the hadronic vacuum polarization. We use the highly-improved staggered quark (HISQ) formulation for the current density with gauge configurations generated with four flavors of HISQ sea quarks. The computation is performed by stochastic estimation of the current density using the truncated solver method combined with deflation of low-modes. The parameters are tuned to minimize the computational cost for a given target uncertainty in the current-current correlation function. The calculation presented here is carried out on a single gauge-field ensemble of size $32^3\times48$ with an approximate lattice spacing of $\sim0.15$ fm and with physical sea-quark masses. We describe the methodology and the analysis procedure

$α_S$ from non-strange hadronic $τ$ decays

We review how the current precision attained in the extraction of $α_s(m_τ)$ from hadronic $τ$ decays requires the inclusion of Duality Violations (DVs) in the analysis, even though these decays are largely dominated by perturbation theory. A weighted average using the OPAL and ALEPH experimental data yields $αs(m_Z) =$ 0.1165$±$0.0012 and $αs(m_Z) =$ 0.1185$±$0.0015 in fixed-orderand contour-improved perturbation theory, respectively.
