Data volume reduction for imaging radar polarimetry

Two data reduction algorithms developed using the scattering and phase matrix approaches are described. In the scattering matrix approach, the scattering matrices of four consecutive along-track pixels are averaged and in the phase matrix approach, the phase matrices of four consecutive along-track pixels are averaged. The basic procedures necessary to generate a synthetic polarization image from original data sets are discussed. The two algorithms are evaluated in terms of data volume reduction and the number of errors introduced in the synthesized images. It is observed that the reduced data set produced by the scattering matrix algorithm is smaller than that generated by the phase matrix algorithm; however, greater errors are introduced into the data set by the scattering matrix algorithm than the phase algorithm. Flowcharts for the scattering and phase matrix approaches and for synthesis of uncompressible data are presented.

A Novel Segmentation Algorithm for the ARM User Facility All-Sky Imagers Using Machine Learning Applications

Cloud cover plays a pivotal role in modulating the Earth's energy budget through the reflection of incoming solar radiation and the trapping of outgoing longwave radiation. Ground-based all-sky imagers offer an objective assessment of cloud cover that can be used to estimate solar irradiance, classify cloud types, track cloud movement, and serve as a benchmark 10 for the evaluation of satellite and reanalysis data products. The Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) user facility has utilized all-sky imagers for more than 25 years to monitor cloud cover and augment its comprehensive suite of atmospheric measurements. Following the retirement of its Total Sky Imager (TSI), ARM recently deployed the TSI’s successor, the All Sky Imager (ASI-16 camera systems). To provide a smooth transition and continuity to the vast amount of knowledge gathered by the TSI over the years, while addressing typical deployment issues, we developed a novel pixel segmentation algorithm, 15 the ASI Sky Cover (ASISKYCOVER). ASISKYCOVER builds on the different strengths and properties of the TSI processing algorithm while integrating machine learning techniques, ensuring data validity and accuracy across diverse atmospheric conditions. It enhances cloud cover characterization with new features such as artifact detection and uncertainty quantification. ASISKYCOVER also includes cloud cover estimates for near-zenith (narrow field-of-view) and reduces susceptibility to false detections. This study introduces ASISKYCOVER, details its algorithm framework, and demonstrates its capabilities using a 20 year-long dataset from the ARM Southern Great Plains site. Comparisons with co-located TSI data and other ARM measurements, such as zenith-pointing radars and lidars, are presented, underscoring the ASISKYCOVER’s potential to improve cloud cover analyses and data evaluation efforts, as well as to be integrated into higher-level data products that synergize instrument suites to generate new and insightful information

LANDSAT instruments characterization

Work performed for the LANDSAT instrument characterization task in the areas of absolute radiometry, coherent noise analysis, and between-date smoothing is reported. Absolute radiometric calibration for LANDSAT-5 TM under ambient conditions was performed. The TM Radiometric Algorithms and Performance Program (TRAPP) was modified to create optional midscan data files and to match the TM Image Processing System (TIPS) algorithm for pulse determination. Several data reduction programs were developed, including a linear regression and its plotted result. A fast Fourier transformation study was conducted on the resequenced TM data. Subscenes of homogeneous water within scenes over Pensacola, Florida were used for testing the FFT on the resequenced data. Finally, a gain and pulse height stability study of LANDSAT 5 TM spectral bands was performed.

Meteorological data fields 'in perspective'

Perspective display techniques can be applied to meteorological data sets to aid in their interpretation. Examples of a perspective display procedure applied to satellite and aircraft visible and infrared image pairs and to stereo cloud-top height analyses are presented. The procedure uses a sophisticated shading algorithm that produces perspective images with greatly improved comprehensibility when compared with the wire-frame perspective displays that have been used in the past. By changing the 'eye-point' and 'view-point' inputs to the program in a systematic way, movie loops that give the impression of flying over or through the data field have been made. This paper gives examples that show how several kinds of meteorological data fields are more effectively illustrated using the perspective technique.

Designing the Imaging and Breadboard System for FBCE-TL Project

This presentation outlines the support work done on designing the imaging and breadboard system of the Transfer Line (TL) project, which is the third module for the Flow Boiling and Condensation Experiment (FBCE) operating in the Fluids Integrated Rack on-board the International Space Station (ISS). The goal of the FBCE is to serve as a facility for flow boiling and condensation investigating two-phase flow and heat transfer data in microgravity. The TL module aims use existing FBCE hardware to study cryogenic chilldown, a large component of cryogenic propellant tank transfer research. The TL test module will perform chilldown studies with normal-perfluorohexane (nPFH), a cryogenic simulant, flowing through a super-heated line, which is heated through the process of Joule-heating. SolidWorks and Creo were used to create electrically conductive pipe junctions that connect and seal several Indium Tin Oxide (ITO) coated sapphire tube sections together to allow for low leak probability fluid flow and circumferentially uniform electrical current density. It is necessary to understand and calculate the thermal expansion of the tubing sections such that the junctions would not leak at anticipated operating temperatures and pressures, would maintain electrical contact, and not crack the crystalline tubes. Optical imaging techniques were used to build an experimentally validated image remapping process for flight-like setups of cylindrical tubes. Then MATLAB was used to create an algorithm that distorts an image based on the refraction of light passing through the mediums we were imaging through to accurately visualize the cryogenic chilldown that is of scientific interest. This research will assist NASA to move forward with long-duration spaceflight missions where knowledge of efficient heat transfer processes becomes more critical.

Adaptive box filters for removal of random noise from digital images

Adaptive box-filtering algorithms to remove random bit errors and to smooth noisy data have been developed. For both procedures, the standard deviation of those pixels within a local box surrounding each pixel is used. A series of two or three filters with decreasing box sizes can be run to clean up extremely noisy images and to remove bit errors near sharp edges. The second filter, for noise smoothing, is similar to the 'sigma filter' of Lee (1983). The technique effectively reduces speckle in radar images without eliminating fine details.

Thermal and range fusion for a planetary rover

This paper describes how fusion between thermal and range imaging allows us to discriminate different types of materials in outdoor scenes. First, we analyze how pure vision segmentation algorithms applied to thermal images allow discriminating materials such as rock and sand. Second, we show how combining thermal and range information allows us to better discriminate rocks from sand. Third, as an application, we examine how an autonomous legged robot can use these techniques to explore other planets.

A Targeted Search for Variable Gravitationally Lensed Quasars

We present a pipeline to identify photometric variability within strong gravitationally lensing candidates, in the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument Legacy Imaging Surveys. In our first paper, we laid out our pipeline and presented seven new gravitationally lensed supernovae candidates in a retrospective search. In this companion paper, we apply a modified version of that pipeline to search for gravitationally lensed quasars. From a sample of 5807 strong lenses, we have identified 13 new gravitationally lensed quasar candidates (three of them quadruply lensed). We note that our methodology differs from most lensed quasar search algorithms that solely rely on the morphology, location, and color of the candidate systems. By also accounting for the temporal photometric variability of the posited lensed images in our search via difference imaging, we have discovered new lensed quasar candidates. While variability searches using difference imaging algorithms have been done in the past, they are typically performed over vast swathes of the sky, whereas we specifically target strong gravitationally lensed candidates. We also have applied our pipeline to 655 known gravitationally lensed quasar candidates from past lensed quasar searches, of which we identified 13 that display significant variability (one of them quadruply lensed). This pipeline demonstrates a promising search strategy to discover gravitationally lensed quasars in other existing and upcoming surveys.

Implementation of a Wavefront-Sensing Algorithm

A computer program has been written as a unique implementation of an image-based wavefront-sensing algorithm reported in "Iterative-Transform Phase Retrieval Using Adaptive Diversity" (GSC-14879-1), NASA Tech Briefs, Vol. 31, No. 4 (April 2007), page 32. This software was originally intended for application to the James Webb Space Telescope, but is also applicable to other segmented-mirror telescopes. The software is capable of determining optical-wavefront information using, as input, a variable number of irradiance measurements collected in defocus planes about the best focal position. The software also uses input of the geometrical definition of the telescope exit pupil (otherwise denoted the pupil mask) to identify the locations of the segments of the primary telescope mirror. From the irradiance data and mask information, the software calculates an estimate of the optical wavefront (a measure of performance) of the telescope generally and across each primary mirror segment specifically. The software is capable of generating irradiance data, wavefront estimates, and basis functions for the full telescope and for each primary-mirror segment. Optionally, each of these pieces of information can be measured or computed outside of the software and incorporated during execution of the software.

Modified Recursive Hierarchical Segmentation of Data

An algorithm and a computer program that implements the algorithm that performs recursive hierarchical segmentation (RHSEG) of data have been developed. While the current implementation is for two-dimensional data having spatial characteristics (e.g., image, spectral, or spectral-image data), the generalized algorithm also applies to three-dimensional or higher dimensional data and also to data with no spatial characteristics. The algorithm and software are modified versions of a prior RHSEG algorithm and software, the outputs of which often contain processing-window artifacts including, for example, spurious segmentation-image regions along the boundaries of processing-window edges.

Moon Search Algorithms for NASA's Dawn Mission to Asteroid Vesta

A moon or natural satellite is a celestial body that orbits a planetary body such as a planet, dwarf planet, or an asteroid. Scientists seek understanding the origin and evolution of our solar system by studying moons of these bodies. Additionally, searches for satellites of planetary bodies can be important to protect the safety of a spacecraft as it approaches or orbits a planetary body. If a satellite of a celestial body is found, the mass of that body can also be calculated once its orbit is determined. Ensuring the Dawn spacecraft's safety on its mission to the asteroid Vesta primarily motivated the work of Dawn's Satellite Working Group (SWG) in summer of 2011. Dawn mission scientists and engineers utilized various computational tools and techniques for Vesta's satellite search. The objectives of this paper are to 1) introduce the natural satellite search problem, 2) present the computational challenges, approaches, and tools used when addressing this problem, and 3) describe applications of various image processing and computational algorithms for performing satellite searches to the electronic imaging and computer science community. Furthermore, we hope that this communication would enable Dawn mission scientists to improve their satellite search algorithms and tools and be better prepared for performing the same investigation in 2015, when the spacecraft is scheduled to approach and orbit the dwarf planet Ceres.

High accuracy optical rate sensor

Optical rate sensors, in particular CCD arrays, will be used on Space Station Freedom to track stars in order to provide inertial attitude reference. An algorithm to provide attitude rate information by directly manipulating the sensor pixel intensity output is presented. The star image produced by a sensor in the laboratory is modeled. Simulated, moving star images are generated, and the algorithm is applied to this data for a star moving at a constant rate. The algorithm produces accurate derived rate of the above data. A step rate change requires two frames for the output of the algorithm to accurately reflect the new rate. When zero mean Gaussian noise with a standard deviation of 5 is added to the simulated data of a star image moving at a constant rate, the algorithm derives the rate with an error of 1.9 percent at a rate of 1.28 pixels per frame.

Determination of the Earth's Plasmapause Location from the CE-3 EUVC Images

The Moon-based Extreme Ultraviolet Camera (EUVC) aboard China's Chang'e-3 (CE-3) mission has successfully imaged the entire Earth's plasmasphere for the first time from the side views on lunar surface. An EUVC image on 21 April 2014 is used in this study to demonstrate the characteristics and configurations of the Moon-based EUV imaging and to illustrate the determination algorithm of the plasmapause locations on the magnetic equator. The plasmapause locations determined from all the available EUVC images with the Minimum L Algorithm are quantitatively compared with those extracted from insitu observations (Defense Meteorological Satellite Program, Time History of Events and Macroscale Interactions during Substorms, and Radiation Belt Storm Probes). Excellent agreement between the determined plasmapauses seen by EUVC and the extracted ones from other satellites indicates the reliability of the Moon-based EUVC images as well as the determination algorithm. This preliminary study provides an important basis for future investigation of the dynamics of the plasmasphere with the Moon-based EUVC imaging.

Image restoration of R136 - The dense core of NGC 2070

We present results from the application of a new seeing deconvolution technique to images of the dense core of NGC 2070 = 30 Doradus (the controversial object R136a). We utilize a new maximum entropy algorithm capable of restoring images to very high resolution, even to subpixel accuracy. Images of the object in different colors, as well as comparisons with previous speckle results, have been used to check the validity of the results. Our images of R136 have an angular resolution approaching 0.2 arcsec, better than any direct images of this object published to date, and corroborate evidence that R136a is a dense star cluster core, rather than a single ultraluminous object.

A Method for Obtaining Surface Flow Vectors and Its Implementation in Interferometric Skin Friction Measurement

A new method was developed to extract surface flow vectors from an oilflow visualization image that has oil streaklines. The method is analogous to the PIV processing where the image is divided into interrogation windows. A representative flow direction is obtained for each interrogation window using image processing with a line-detection algorithm. Repeating the process for the entire image, one can find the surface vector field. The Hough transformation, Radon transformation and Machine Learning were used as line-detection algorithms. The obtained vector field is then postprocessed to filter spurious vectors and to apply smoothing. The method was tested on 2D and 3D models with different flow complexities. The method was able to predict surface flow vectors for all cases tested. The predicted surface flow vectors were used in obtaining the surface skin friction. The successful implementation of the surface flow vectors enables interferometric skin friction measurements on surfaces beneath 3D complex flows. In addition, the surface flow vectors can be superimposed on the oilflow visualization images to better explain the surface flow topology.
