Phonon Dispersion Relations and Electron-Phonon Coupling in Iridium

This dataset comprises inelastic neutron scattering measurements of iridium conducted at SNS (ARCS, ITPS-30061) and HFIR (HB-3, TAX, IPTS-25194). ARCS data collected using 50 meV incident energy and include both signal and background files at various temperatures (100 K to 700 K). HB-3 (TAX) measurements span a temperature range from 100 K to 700 K and are organized by run numbers. Background contributions from the sample environment, such as shiver-induced noise, are included for completeness. The details of data description can be found in description.txt.

Lattice dynamics of alpha-uranium measured on ARCS.

The combined inelastic neutron scattering data from ARCS for alpha-Uranium single crystal measured at 300K, 200K, 70K and 20K. The incident neutron energy was 30 meV. To obtain a significant four-dimensional Q-E volume, the crystal was measured in two scattering geometries, with the [001] and [011] directions oriented along the vertical rotations axis. For each geometry, the crystal was rotated in 1 degree steps with respect to the incident beam. All the individual angles data files at each temperature were merged and analyzed using SHIVER software package (https://neutrons.github.io/Shiver/). The files labeled a_U_HKL_20K_new.nxs, a_U_HKL_70K.nxs, a_U_HKL_200K.nxs and a_U_HKL_300K.nxs are for [011] oriented scattering at 20K, 70K, 200K, and 300K respectively. The files labeled a_U_HK0_70K.nxs, a_U_HK0_200K.nxs and a_U_HK0_300K.nxs are for [001] oriented scattering at temperatures 70K, 200K and 300K respectively.

Kernel polynomial method for linear spin wave theory

Calculating dynamical spin correlations is essential for matching model magnetic exchange Hamiltonians to momentum-resolved spectroscopic measurements. A major numerical bottleneck is the diagonalization of the dynamical matrix, especially in systems with large magnetic unit cells, such as those with incommensurate magnetic structures or quenched disorder. In this paper, we demonstrate an efficient scheme based on the kernel polynomial method for calculating dynamical correlations of relevance to inelastic neutron scattering experiments. This method reduces the scaling of numerical cost from cubic to linear in the magnetic unit cell size.

Evidence for field induced quantum spin liquid behavior in a spin-1/2 honeycomb magnet

One of the most important issues in modern condensed matter physics is the realization of fractionalized excitations, such as the Majorana excitations in the Kitaev quantum spin liquid. To this aim, the 3d-based Kitaev material Na 2 Co 2 TeO 6 is a promising candidate whose magnetic phase diagram of B // a* contains a field-induced intermediate magnetically disordered phase within 7.5 T < |B| < 10 T. The experimental observations, including the restoration of the crystalline point group symmetry in the angle-dependent torque and the coexisting magnon excitations and spinon-continuum in the inelastic neutron scattering spectrum, provide strong evidence that this disordered phase is a field induced quantum spin liquid with partially polarized spins. Our variational Monte Carlo simulation with the effective K-J 1 -Γ-Γ'-J 3 model reproduces the experimental data and further supports this conclusion.

Dirac Magnon in Honeycomb Lattice Magnet NiTiO 3

We performed inelastic neutron scattering experiments on single-crystal samples of the honeycomb lattice magnet, ilmenite NiTiO 3 . Below the Néel temperature of 22 K, spin wave excitations with a band energy of 3.7 meV were observed. Further, the neutron energy spectra were well-reproduced by modeling the system as a ferromagnetic honeycomb lattice with antiferromagnetic interlayer coupling, using linear spin wave theory. Similar to another ilmenite CoTiO 3 , a crossing structure was observed at the K point, suggesting the presence of Dirac magnons in NiTiO 3 . Further calculations suggested the formation of Dirac nodal line.

Neutron Spectroscopy Study on Crystalline Electric Field Excitations in NdB 4

Herein, the f-electron states of NdB 4 were determined by observing crystalline electric field (CEF) excitations in inelastic neutron scattering experiments. The resulting CEF excitation energies were 2.8, 12.4, 17.2, and 25.4 meV. The f-electron states were simply described by one of the J-multiplets |±J z $\rangle$ with negligibly small mixing. The ground state was the pseudoquartet comprising the ground doublet dominated by |±$\frac{5}{2}$$\rangle$ and the first excited doublet dominated by |±$\frac{7}{2}$$\rangle$ at 2.8 meV, consistent with magnetic specific heat and entropy reported in a previous study. In conclusion, the simple f-electron states in NdB 4 were the consequence of the strong uniaxial and in-plane isotropic CEF potential due to the local structure of Nd 3+ with point symmetry C 2v .

High resolution daytime photoelectron energy spectra from AE-E

The daytime photoelectron energy spectrum has been measured at altitudes above 154 km by the photoelectron-spectrometer experiment on the Atmosphere Explorer-E satellite. Below 200 km, well-resolved peaks are observed in the spectrum corresponding to production of O(+) and N2(+) in various electronic states from photoionization of N2 and O by solar He II (304A) radiation. Vibration-rotation excitation of N2 by inelastic electron scattering is observed at 2.5 eV. The features due to nitrogen disappear from the spectrum at altitudes above 200 km.

Background studies in gas ionizing x ray detectors

The background response of a gas ionizing proportional x ray detector is estimated by solving the one dimensional photon transport equation for two regions using Monte Carlo techniques. The solution was effected using the SSL VAX 780 and the CRAY XMP computers at Marshall Space Flight Center. The isotropic photon energy spectrum encompassing the range from 1 to 1000 KeV incident onto the first region, the shield, is taken so as to represent the measured spectrum at an altitude of 3 mb over Palastine, Texas. The differential energy spectrum deposited in the gas region, xenon, over the range of 0 to 100 KeV is written to an output file. In addition, the photon flux emerging from the shield region, tin, over the range of 1 to 1000 KeV is also tabulated and written to a separate file. Published tabular cross sections for photoelectric, elastic and inelastic Compton scattering as well as the total absorption coefficient are used. Histories of each incident photon as well as secondary photons from Compton and photoelectric interactions are followed until the photon either is absorbed or exits from the regions under consideration. The effect of shielding thickness upon the energy spectrum deposited in the xenon region for this background spectrum incident upon the tin shield was studied.
