Heterodyne spectroscopy of the J = 22-21 CO line in Orion

We have observed the J = 22-21 line of 12CO at 2528 GHz (118.8 micrometers) in the IRc2 region of Orion. The spectra at 0.6 km s-1 resolution show both plateau emission with FWHM approximately 35 km s-1 and a narrower component with FWHM approximately 8 km s-1. Comparison with heterodyne data of similar quality on the J = 17-16 line indicates that the broad and narrow components both originate in gas with an excitation temperature Tex approximately 600 K. The emission is consistent with the predictions of shock models in which the wide component arises from the heated outflow gas and postshock molecular material, while the narrow component comes from ambient material near the leading edge of the shock front where temperatures are high but significant acceleration has not yet occurred.

The discovery of a new infrared emission feature at 1905 wavenumbers (5.25 microns) in the spectrum of BD +30 degrees 3639 and its relation to the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon model

We have discovered a new IR emission feature at 1905 cm-1 (5.25 microns) in the spectrum of BD +30 degrees 3639. This feature joins the family of well-known IR emission features at 3040, 2940, 1750, 1610, "1310," 1160, and 890 cm-1 (3.3, 3.4, 5.7, 6.2, "7.7," 8.6, and 11.2 microns). The origin of this new feature is discussed and it is assigned to an overtone or combination band involving C-H bending modes of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Laboratory work suggests that spectral studies of the 2000-1650 cm-1 (5.0-6.1 microns) region may be very useful in elucidating the molecular structure of interstellar PAHs. The new feature, in conjunction with other recently discovered spectral structure, suggests that the narrow IR emission features originate in PAH molecules rather than large carbon grains. Larger species are likely to be the source of the broad underlying "plateaus" seen in many of the spectra.

67 additional L dwarfs discovered by the Two Micron All Sky Survey

One of the goals of this new search was to locate more examples of the latest L dwarfs. Of the 67 new discoveries, 17 have types of L6 or later. Analysis of these new discoveries shows that 16 (and possibly four more) of the new L dwarfs are lithium brown dwarfs and that the average line strength for those L dwarfs showing lithium increases until type L6.5 V, then declines for later types.

ISO Mid-Infrared Spectra of Reflection Nebulae

Our goal is to test predictions of models attributing the IEFs to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Interstellar models predict PAHs change from singly ionized to neutral as the UV intensity, Go, decreases.

10-30 micrometer Maps of the Central 5 parsecs of the Galaxy: Heating of the Cavity and Neutral-Gas Disk

Maps are presented for 10, 20, and 30 micrometers of the central 60' X 90' (RA X Dec) of the galaxy made at approximately 4' resolution with the MSFC bolometer array. The maps are the first to show the thermal emission from dust particles in both the ionized cavity and the neutral-gas ring with high sensitivity and an angular resolution as good as several arcsec.

HH110 Jet Near Infrared Imaging. I. The Outflow Mixing Layer?

Near infrared images are presented of the Herbig-Haro 110 jet centered at the molecular hydrogen lines. The ratio of these lines provides a preliminary diagnostic of molecular gas excitation, which is expected from low velocity shocks and turbulent processes. It is suggested that the morphological properties of the molecular hydrogen emission are consistent with that of a boundary layer.

High Resolution IRAS Maps and IR Emission of M31 -- II. Diffuse Component and Interstellar Dust

Large-scale dust heating and cooling in the diffuse medium of M31 is studied using the high resolution (HiRes) IRAS maps in conjunction with UV, optical (UBV), and the HI maps. A dust heating/cooling model is developed based on a radiative transfer model which assumes a 'Sandwich' configuration of dust and stars takes account of the effect of dust grain scattering.
