Identification of USSR Indicator Regions

Potential indicator regions were determined by comparing the statistics for barley and wheat at the lowest administrative levels for which published statistics were available. Fourteen were selected for review based on their relative abundances of wheat and barely. These potential indicator regions were grouped according to three conditions that could affect labeling and classification accuracies: (1) high-barley content; (2) presence of barley and spring wheat; and (3) presence of barley and winter wheat. Each region was further evaluated based on the availability of crop calendars, LANDSAT acquisitions, and ancillary data. Based on the relative abundance of wheat and barley and the availability of data, three indicator regions were recommended. Within each region, individual oblasts and/or krays were selected according to segment availability and segment acquisition histories for potential barley separation.

Development of a universal water signature for the LANDSAT-3 Multispectral Scanner, part 1

A generalized four channel hyperplane to discriminate water from nonwater was developed using LANDSAT-3 multispectral scaner (MSS) scenes and matching same/next day color infrared aerial photography. The MSS scenes varied in sun elevation angle from 40 to 58 deg. The 28 matching air photo frames contained over 1400 water bodies larger than one surface acre. A preliminary water discriminant, was used to screen the data and eliminate from further consideration all pixels distant from water in MSS spectral space. A linear discriminant was iteratively fitted to the labelled pixels. This discriminant correctly classified 98.7% of the water pixels and 98.6% of the nonwater pixels. The discriminant detected 91.3% of the 414 water bodies over 10 acres in surface area, and misclassified as water 36 groups of contiguous nonwater pixels.

Effect of weightlessness and centrifugation on red cell survival in rats subjected to space flight

Rats were flown aboard the Soviet biosatellite Cosmos 936 for 18.5 d during August, 1977. Five rats were subjected to near-weightless space flight, as with Cosmos 782, and five rats were subjected to a 1-G force via an on-board centrifuge. These rats and three control groups were injected with 2-(C-14) glycine 19 d preflight. The flight rats were recovered from orbit after 18.5 d of space flight. Erythrocyte hemolysis and lifespan were evaluated in the five groups of rats by quantitation of radioactive carbon monoxide exhaled in the breath which arises from the breakdown of the previously labeled hemoglobin. The results support the previous findings wherein hemolysis was found to increase as a result of weightless space flight. A comparison to the centrifuged animals indicates that artificial gravity attenuates the effect of weightlessness on hemolysis and appears to normalize the hemolytic rate in the early postflight period.

Synthesis of oligoguanylates on oligocytidylate templates

The influence of template length in the self-condensation of guanosine 5'-phosphorimidazole in the presence of oligocytidylate templates is investigated. Reactions were carried out with cyclic cytidine 2',3'-phosphate, oligo- or polyC, and radioactively labeled guanosine 5'-phosphorimidazolide in the presence of Zn(+2) or Pb(+2) catalyst; product yields were determined by paper chromatography, thin-layer chromatography, and high-performance liquid chromatography. In the absence of a catalytic metal or in the presence of Pb(+2), a significant template effect is observed starting with the cytidine dimer and increasing in yield up to the hexamer template. Oligomers longer than the template are observed, and are predominantly 2'-5' linked in the presence of Pb(+2) and of mixed linkages in the uncatalyzed reaction. With the zinc ion as the catalyst, the template effect is first observed with the pentamer and is maximal with the heptamer. Products are predominantly 3'-5', and only a small proportion of them are longer than the template. The importance of the demonstrated formation of molecules with up to 10 guanosine units from oligocytidines as short as the dimer on the primitive earth is noted.

AgRISTARS: Foreign commodity production forecasting. Corn/soybean decision logic development and testing

The development and testing of an analysis procedure which was developed to improve the consistency and objectively of crop identification using Landsat data is described. The procedure was developed to identify corn and soybean crops in the U.S. corn belt region. The procedure consists of a series of decision points arranged in a tree-like structure, the branches of which lead an analyst to crop labels. The specific decision logic is designed to maximize the objectively of the identification process and to promote the possibility of future automation. Significant results are summarized.

Selection of the Australian indicator region

Each Australian state was examined for the availability of LANDSAT data, area, yield, and production characteristics, statistics, crop calendars, and other ancillary data. Agrophysical conditions that could influence labeling and classification accuracies were identified in connection with the highest producing states as determined from available Australian crop statistics. Based primarily on these production statistics, Western Australia and New South Wales were selected as the wheat indicator region for Australia. The general characteristics of wheat in the indicator region, with potential problems anticipated for proportion estimation are considered. The varieties of wheat, the diseases and pests common to New South Wales, and the wheat growing regions of both states are examined.

Evaluation of ceramic packed-rod regenerator matrices

An extensive evaluation of a modified cryocooler with various regenerator matrices is reported. The matrices examined are 0.015 in. diam. Pb spheres and 0.008, 0.015, and 0.030 in. diam. rods of a 0.2% SnCl2 doped ceramic labelled LS-8A. Specific heat and thermal conductivity data on these rod materials are also reported. The chronic pulverization/dusting problem common to Pb spheres was investigated. During a 1000 hr life test with 0.0008 in. diam. rods there was no degradation of the refrigerator performance, and a subsequent examination of the rods themselves revealed no evidence of breakage or pulverization. The load temperature characteristics for the rod packed regenerators were inferior to that for the Pb spheres, the effect being to shift the Pb spheres load curve up in temperature. This temperature shift was 5.0, 7.4, and 11.6K for the 0.0008, 0.015, and 0.030 in. diam. rods, respectively.

The violet interstellar medium associated with the Carina Nebula

The interstellar spectrum of HD 93205, an 03V star in the cluster Tr16, located inside the most active part of the Great Carina Nebula was analyzed using data extracted directly from raw IUE images. From the analysis of 67 lines of 25 atoms, ions and molecules, up to six discrete absorption components spanning a maximum velocity range of approximately 375 km 5/1 were identified. The component structure for different species is tabulated and sample absorption lines, indicating at the top the positions of the six components, labelled A to F are shown. Ion column densities appropriate to each component which can be resolved in at least one line were derived by constructing empirical curves of growth and by fitting the observations with corresponding theoretical absorption line profiles. The most important results concerning each component are discussed.

Use of Landsat-derived temporal profiles for corn-soybean feature extraction and classification

A physical model is presented, which has been derived from multitemporal-multispectral data acquired by Landsat satellites to describe the behavior and new features that are crop specific. A feasibility study over 40 sites was performed to classify the segment pixels into those of corn, soybeans, and others using the new features and a linear classifier. Results agree well with other existing methods, and it is shown the multitemporal-multispectral scanner data can be transformed into two parameters that are closely related to the target of interest and thus can be used in classification. The approach is less time intensive than other techniques and requires labeling of only pure pixels.

The latitude dependence of the variance of zonally averaged quantities

Geometric characteristics of the spherical earth are shown to be responsible for the increase of variance with latitude of zonally averaged meteorological statistics. An analytic model is constructed to display the effect of a spherical geometry on zonal averages, employing a sphere labeled with radial unit vectors in a real, stochastic field expanded in complex spherical harmonics. The variance of a zonally averaged field is found to be expressible in terms of the spectrum of the vector field of the spherical harmonics. A maximum variance is then located at the poles, and the ratio of the variance to the zonally averaged grid-point variance, weighted by the cosine of the latitude, yields the zonal correlation typical of the latitude. An example is provided for the 500 mb level in the Northern Hemisphere compared to 15 years of data. Variance is determined to increase north of 60 deg latitude.

Using ecological zones to increase the detail of Landsat classifications

Changes in classification detail of forest species descriptions were made for Landsat data on 2.2 million acres in northwestern California. Because basic forest canopy structures may exhibit very similar E-M energy reflectance patterns in different environmental regions, classification labels based on Landsat spectral signatures alone become very generalized when mapping large heterogeneous ecological regions. By adding a seven ecological zone stratification, a 167% improvement in classification detail was made over the results achieved without it. The seven zone stratification is a less costly alternative to the inclusion of complex collateral information, such as terrain data and soil type, into the Landsat data base when making inventories of areas greater than 500,000 acres.

Performance comparison for Barnes model 12-1000, Exotech model 100, and Ideas Inc. Biometer Mark 2

Results of tests show that all channels of all instruments, except channel 3 of the Biometer Mark 2, were stable in response to input signals were linear, and were adequately stable in response to temperature changes. The Biometer Mark 2 is labelled with an inappropriate description of the units measured and the dynamic range is a inappropriate for field measurements causing unnecessarily high fractional errors. This instrument is, therefore, quantization limited. The dynamic range and noise performance of the Model 12-1000 are appropriate for remote sensing field research. The field of view and performance of the Model 100A and the Model 12-1000 are satisfactory. The Biometer Mark 2 has not, as yet, been satisfactorily equipped with an acceptable field of view determining device. Neither the widely used aperture plate nor the 24 deg cone are acceptable.

Prime agricultural land monitoring and assessment component of the California Integrated Remote Sensing System

The use of digital LANDSAT techniques for monitoring agricultural land use conversions was studied. Two study areas were investigated: one in Ventura County and the other in Fresno County (California). Ventura test site investigations included the use of three dates of LANDSAT data to improve classification performance beyond that previously obtained using single data techniques. The 9% improvement is considered highly significant. Also developed and demonstrated using Ventura County data is an automated cluster labeling procedure, considered a useful example of vertical data integration. Fresno County results for a single data LANDSAT classification paralleled those found in Ventura, demonstrating that the urban/rural fringe zone of most interest is a difficult environment to classify using LANDSAT data. A general raster to vector conversion program was developed to allow LANDSAT classification products to be transferred to an operational county level geographic information system in Fresno.

Geometric and radiometric characterization of LANDSAT-D thematic mapper and multispectral scanner data

A geometrically raw image of Washington, D.C. was acquired and radiometrically corrected. The data show little of the detector stripping common in earlier MSS images. The radiometrically corrected data have uniform means and standard deviations for the detectors in each band; however, the data for different detectors utilize a different pattern of DN levels, resulting in ubiquitous stripping of 1 DN amplitude. Band-to-band registration was assessed using color composites and small area correlation techniques. The spectral equivalency of the first four bands of the thematic mapper with the four bands of the MSS is being examined. Geometric analysis of the Washington, D.C. scene have started and a generalized routine for examining the contents of the label files and nonvideo data files was implemented. Several discrepancies from the documentation are described. Night scenes and daytime ocean scenes required for radiometric purposes were identified and the data ordered.
