Electronic Structures, Magnetic Properties and Half-Metallicity of Heusler Compounds Hf{sub 2}VZ (Z = Ga, In, Tl, Si, Ge, Sn and Pb): First-Principle Calculations

We investigate the electronic structures, magnetic properties and half-metallicity of Heusler compounds Hf{sub 2}VZ (Z = Ga, In, Tl, Si, Ge, Sn and Pb) with Hg{sub 2}CuTi-type structure by using the first-principle calculations based on density-functional theory. It is found that the equilibrium lattice constants of Hf{sub 2}VZ (Z = Ga, In, Tl, Si, Ge, Sn and Pb) compounds are 6.68, 6.88, 6.91, 6.57, 6.63, 6.85 and 6.94 Å, respectively. Hf{sub 2}VZ (Z = Ga, In, Tl, Si and Sn) compounds exhibit half-metallicity at their respective equilibrium lattice constants. Hf{sub 2}VGe and Hf{sub 2}VPb do not exhibit half-metallicity at their equilibrium lattice constants but can present the half-metallicity when the lattice constant decreases to 6.51 and 6.71 Å, respectively. In case of the lattice thermal expansion, the half-metallicity can be kept in the range of 6.30∼ 7.27, 6.36∼ 7.80, 6.46∼ 7.35, 6.00∼ 6.70 and 6.10∼ 6.95 Å (lattice constant) for Hf{sub 2}VZ (Z = Ga, In, Tl, Si and Sn). Under the unaxial strain, the half-metallicity can still be kept for Hf{sub 2}VZ (Z = Ga, In, Tl) when the lattice distortion is up to ± 10% (c/a) and be kept for Hf{sub 2}VZ (Z = Si, Sn) when the lattice distortion is 0.88∼ 1.09, 0.91∼ 1.09 (c/a). For the Hf{sub 2}VZ compounds with half-metallicity, the total magnetic moment is 2 μ{sub B} when Z is the third main group elements and is 1 μ{sub B} when Z is the fourth main group elements. The Hf{sub 2}VZ compounds with half-metallicity obey the Slater-Pauling formula: M{sub t} = 18 − Z{sub t} rule.

First-Principles Study in New Hf{sub 2}CoZ (Z = B, C, Al, Si, Ga, Ge, In, Sn, Tl, and Pb) Heusler Alloys

The full-potential linearized augmented plane wave method within density functional theory was used to investigate the electronic structures, magnetic properties, and half-metallicity in Hf{sub 2}CoZ (Z = B,C, Al, Si, Ga, Ge, In, Sn, Tl, and Pb) alloys with AlCu{sub 2}Mn- and CuHg{sub 2}Ti-type structures. The AlCu{sub 2}Mn-type structure is energetically favorable than the CuHg{sub 2}Ti-type structure for all compounds. Hf{sub 2}CoGa, Hf{sub 2}CoAl, Hf{sub 2}CoIn, Hf{sub 2}CoTl, and Hf{sub 2}CoSn compounds in the CuHg{sub 2}Ti-type structure were half-metallic ferromagnets. The d-d and covalent hybridizations between transition metals Hf and Co were effective in the formation of minority band gap. The total magnetic moments of half-metallic Hf{sub 2}CoZ (Z = Al, Ga, In, Sn, and Tl) compounds in the CuHg{sub 2}Ti-type structure obeyed the Slater–Pauling rule (M{sub tot} = Z{sub tot} − 18). Hf{sub 2}CoIn and Hf{sub 2}CoTl compounds were half-metals in relatively wide ranges of lattice constants which indicates that they can be promising and interesting candidates for spintronic devices.

High pressure synthesis of a hexagonal close-packed phase of the high-entropy alloy CrMnFeCoNi

High-entropy alloys, near-equiatomic solid solutions of five or more elements, represent a new strategy for the design of materials with properties superior to those of conventional alloys. However, their phase space remains constrained, with transition metal high-entropy alloys exhibiting only face- or body-centered cubic structures. Here, we report the high-pressure synthesis of a hexagonal close-packed phase of the prototypical high-entropy alloy CrMnFeCoNi. This martensitic transformation begins at 14 GPa and is attributed to suppression of the local magnetic moments, destabilizing the initial fcc structure. Similar to fcc-to-hcp transformations in Al and the noble gases, the transformation is sluggish, occurring over a range of >40 GPa. However, the behaviour of CrMnFeCoNi is unique in that the hcp phase is retained following decompression to ambient pressure, yielding metastable fcc-hcp mixtures. This demonstrates a means of tuning the structures and properties of high-entropy alloys in a manner not achievable by conventional processing techniques.

First-Principle Calculation of Electronic Structures and Magnetic Properties of Heusler Alloys Co{sub 2}ZrPb and Zr{sub 2}MnBa

Using first-principle method of density functional theory (DFT), we have investigated the underlying mechanism related to the electronic and magnetic properties of novel full Heusler alloys Co{sub 2}ZrPb and Zr{sub 2}MnB. Our results show that compound Zr{sub 2}MnB is a nonmagnetic semiconductor whereas Co{sub 2}ZrPb is half metallic a magnetic moment of 2 μ{sub B} per formula unit. It exhibits a large spin gap of 0.334 eV for equilibrium lattice constant and has excellent half-metallic ferrimagnetism with 100% spin polarization at the Fermi level. The half-metallicity of Co{sub 2}ZrPb is stable against lattice change of −2.6 to 0.83%. The Co-based Heusler alloys are expected to be ideal candidates for spintronic devices.

Synthesis and Characterization of Er-Doped Nano ZnO Samples

Pure and erbium-doped ZnO nanoparticles (Zn{sub 1−x}Er{sub x}O), (0.00 ≤ x ≤ 0.10), were synthesized by wet chemical co-precipitation method. The structural, optical, and magnetic properties of the prepared samples were investigated using x-ray powder diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy (UV), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), M-H magnetic hysteresis, and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR). XRD studies exhibit the presence of a single ZnO wurtzite hexagonal crystal structure for 0.00 ≤ x ≤ 0.06. A secondary phase of Er{sub 2}O{sub 3} appears for x > 0.06. This means that the solubility limit for doping Zn{sup 2+} ions by Er{sup 3+} ions is about x = 0.06 under our preparations condition. The lattice parameter a is not affected by the Erbium doping. On the other hand, the lattice parameter c and the unit cell volume V increase with the increase of x up to x = 0.06. This is attributed to the larger ionic size of Er{sup 3+} ions (0.88 Å) compared to Zn{sup 2+} ions (0.74 Å). Both c and V decrease for x > 0.06. TEM micrographs indicate that the shape and the size of the ZnO nanoparticles are modified by changing the doping level of Er. The UV measurements point out that band gap energy E{sub g} decreases with the increase of x up to x = 0.06. Then, it increases for both x = 0.08 and 0.10. FTIR spectra confirm the presence of O–H and Zn–O stretching modes at 3451.963 and 428.901 cm{sup − 1}, respectively, in pure and doped ZnO samples. The Zn–O stretching mode shifts toward a lower wavenumber for x = 0.06 and toward a higher wavenumber for x = 0.10. M-H hysteresis analysis, at room temperature, reveals that the pure ZnO has a ferromagnetic signal combined with diamagnetic and paramagnetic contributions. This ferromagnetism is reduced for the doped samples up to x = 0.02, and an antiferromagnetic alignment appears for 0.04 ≤ x ≤ 0.10. The saturation magnetization (M{sub s}), the coercivity (H{sub c}), the retentivity (M{sub r}), the anisotropy constant (K{sub a}), and the magnetic moment (μ{sub m}) were estimated and discussed in terms of erbium doping for the different samples. EPR spectra for Zn{sub 1−x}Er{sub x}O were measured at room temperature in order to study the effect of Er substitution on the g value, resonance field (H{sub r}), peak to peak line width (ΔH{sub pp}) and spin–spin relaxation time constant (T{sub 2}).

Quaternary rare-earth sulfides RE{sub 3}M{sub 0.5}GeS{sub 7} (RE=La–Nd, Sm; M=Co, Ni) and Y{sub 3}Pd{sub 0.5}SiS{sub 7}

The two metal-deficient series of quaternary Ge-containing sulfides RE{sub 3}M{sub 0.5}GeS{sub 7} (RE = La–Nd, Sm; M = Co, Ni), as well as the related Si-containing sulfide Y{sub 3}Pd{sub 0.5}SiS{sub 7}, were prepared by reactions of the elements at 1050 °C. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis performed on all compounds confirmed noncentrosymmetric hexagonal structures (space group P6{sub 3}, Z =2) with cell parameters in the ranges of a =10.0–10.3 Å and c =5.7–5.8 Å for RE{sub 3}Co{sub 0.5}GeS{sub 7} and RE{sub 3}Ni{sub 0.5}GeS{sub 7}, or a =9.7891(3) Å and c =5.6840(4) Å for Y{sub 3}Pd{sub 0.5}SiS{sub 7}. They are classified as La{sub 3}Mn{sub 0.5}SiS{sub 7}-type structures, with M atoms centred within octahedra (in contrast to La{sub 3}CuSiS{sub 7}-type structures in which M atoms occupy trigonal planar sites) and Ge atoms centred within tetrahedra, both types of polyhedra being arranged in one-dimensional stacks aligned along the c-direction. Charge balance requirements dictate half-occupancy of the M sites. However, bond valence sum arguments indicated that the M atoms are somewhat underbonded within these octahedral sites, so that there is evidence that in some compounds, they can also enter the trigonal planar site at low occupancy (~5%). Magnetic measurements on RE{sub 3}Co{sub 0.5}GeS{sub 7} (RE = Ce, Pr, Sm) revealed paramagnetic behaviour for the Ce and Pr members and apparent antiferromagnetic ordering (T{sub N} =14 K) for the Sm member; fitting to the Curie-Weiss law gave effective magnetic moments consistent with the presence of RE{sup 3+} and Co{sup 2+} species. Band structure calculations on ordered models of La{sub 3}M{sub 0.5}GeS{sub 7} (M = Co, Ni) showed that the Fermi level cuts through M 3d states in the DOS curve and supported the presence of strong M–S and Ge–S bonding interactions. - Graphical abstract: RE{sub 3}M{sub 0.5}GeS{sub 7} (M = Co, Ni) and Y{sub 3}Pd{sub 0.5}SiS{sub 7} contain M atoms partially occupying octahedral and, in some cases, trigonal planar sites within noncentrosymmetric hexagonal structures. - Highlights: • The missing M = Co and Ni series in hexagonal RE{sub 3}M{sub 0.5}GeS{sub 7} have been prepared. • Charge balance is ensured through half occupancy of octahedral M sites. • In some cases, a secondary trigonal planar M site is occupied at very low levels. • Magnetic measurements on RE{sub 3}Co{sub 0.5}GeS{sub 7} support presence of RE{sup 3+} and Co{sup 2+}.

Neutron scattering off Weyl semimetals

We present how to detect type-I Weyl nodes in a material by inelastic neutron scattering. Such an experiment first of all allows one to determine the dispersion of the Weyl fermions. We extend the reasoning to produce a quantitative test of the Weyl equation, taking into account realistic anisotropic properties. These anisotropies are mostly contained in the form of the emergent magnetic moment of the excitations, which determines how they couple to the neutrons. Although there are many material parameters, we find several quantitative predictions that are universal and demonstrate that the excitations are described by solutions to the Weyl equation. The anisotropic coupling between electrons and neutrons implies that even fully unpolarized neutrons can reveal the spin-momentum locking of the Weyl fermions because the neutrons will couple to some components of the Weyl fermion pseudospin more strongly. On the other hand, in an experiment with polarized neutrons, the scattered neutron beam remains fully polarized in a direction that varies as a function of momentum transfer (within the range of validity of the Weyl equation). This allows measurement of the chirality of Weyl fermions for inversion-symmetric nodes. Furthermore, in this work we estimate that the scattering rate may be large enough for such experiments to be practical; in particular, the magnetic moment may be larger than the ordinary Bohr magneton, compensating for a small density of states.

The Structural, Electronic, and Magnetic Properties of Binary Heusler Alloys ZCl{sub 3} (Z = Li, Na, K, Rb) with DO{sub 3}-Type Structure from First Principle Calculations

The structural, electronic, and magnetic properties of binary Heusler alloys ZCl{sub 3} (Z = Li, Na, K, Rb) with DO{sub 3}-type structure have been studied by means of the first principle calculations. The calculated results reveal that all four alloys are half-metallic (HM) materials at the stable ferromagnetic ground state. The total magnetic moments (M{sub t}) of LiCl{sub 3}, NaCl{sub 3}, KCl{sub 3,} and RbCl{sub 3} alloys are all 2.000 μ{sub B}/f.u., following the Slater-Pauling rule M{sub t} = 24 − Z{sub t} for the former two alloys, while satisfying the Slater-Pauling rule M{sub t} = 30 − Z{sub t} for the latter two alloys. The spin-up band gaps of the binary Heusler alloys ZCl{sub 3} (Z = Li, Na, K, Rb) are 5.598, 5.687, 6.744, and 6.745 eV at equilibrium lattice constants 7.076, 7.237, 7.588, and 7.819 Å, respectively. The positive cohesion energy and negative formation energy indicate that they are thermodynamically stable. Moreover, wide HM regions for binary Heusler alloys ZCl{sub 3} (Z = Li, Na, K, Rb) show their HM characters are robust when the lattices are expanded or compressed under uniform and tetragonal strains. Finally, the total charge density, magnetic charge density, and charge density difference of the (110) plane for LiCl{sub 3} alloy are analyzed in detail.

First-principles Calculations of Structural, Magnetic Electronic and Optical Properties of Rare-earth Metals TbX (X=N, O, S, Se)

The structural, magnetic, electronic and optical properties of Terbium-based binaries (TbX) (X = N, O, S and Se) in two cubic structures NaCl and CsCl have been investigated. This study is carried out by Full-Potential linearized Muffin-Tin orbitals (FP-LMTO) method in the framework of the functional theory of density (DFT) implemented in the lmtart code. The presence of f-state electrons in these induced high-correlation materials led us to study these systems using local density approximation (LDA) for the paramagnetic state and spin local density approximation (LSDA) for the ferromagnetic state within two cubic structures. We have demonstrated that these binaries are stable in the ferromagnetic state in the cubic phase of NaCl, which allows us to deduce the magnetic moments of these components. From the electronic band structures and density states, we have concluded that TbX (X = N, O, S and Se) are metallic in the NaCl phase. The results obtained in this work show that the theoretical parameters of the ground state, structure of the bands, density of the states (DOS) and optical properties agree well with other available theoretical and experimental data.

Magnetic Interactions in Substitutional Core-Doped Graphene Nanoribbons

The design of a spin imbalance within the crystallographic unit cell of bottom-up engineered 1D graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) gives rise to nonzero magnetic moments within each cell. Here, we demonstrate the bottom-up assembly and spectroscopic characterization of a one-dimensional Kondo spin chain formed by a chevron-type GNR (cGNR) physisorbed on Au(111). Substitutional nitrogen core doping introduces a pair of low-lying occupied states per monomer within the semiconducting gap of cGNRs. Charging resulting from the interaction with the gold substrate quenches one electronic state for each monomer, leaving behind a 1D chain of radical cations commensurate with the unit cell of the ribbon. In this work, scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and spectroscopy (STS) reveal the signature of a Kondo resonance emerging from the interaction of $\textit{S}$ = 1/2 spin centers in each monomer core with itinerant electrons in the Au substrate. STM tip lift-off experiments locally reduce the effective screening of the unpaired radical cation being lifted, revealing a robust exchange coupling between neighboring spin centers. First-principles DFT-LSDA calculations support the presence of magnetic moments in the core of this GNR when it is placed on Au.

A Role of the 3d Electron Subsystem in the Evolution of Band Structure and Magnetic and Optical Properties of ErNi{sub 5 –} {sub x}Co{sub x} Compounds (x = 0–4)

The evolution of the electronic structure and optical and magnetic properties of ErNi{sub 5 –} {sub x}Co{sub x} compounds (x = 0–4), occurring upon substitution of nickel by cobalt atoms, has been investigated. Spin-polarization calculations of the band spectrum of these intermetallic compounds have been performed within the local spin density approximation with a correction for strong electron correlations in the 4f shell of a rare-earth ion (method LSDA+U). The values of magnetic moments for erbium, nickel, and cobalt ions (located at different crystallographic sites) are obtained. The exchange-interaction parameters for the 3d sublattice of transition metals are determined. The spectral properties of the compounds have been investigated in the wavelength range of 0.22–15 μm by optical ellipsometry. The experimental frequency dependences of the optical conductivity in the interband absorption region are compared with the corresponding characteristics calculated based on the density of electronic states.

Quantum sensing for fundamental physics efforts at SQMS

One of the areas of research of the Superconducting Quantum Systems and Materials (SQMS) center is the application of quantum sensing to fundamental physics searches, demonstrating that quantum sensors can greatly improve the sensitivity of experiments searching for Beyond the Standard Model (BSM) physics, or performing high-precision measurements. Theorists have developed many ideas for BSM physics that would result in interactions that can in principle be detected, but with signals small enough that they haven t been observed yet. In this field, the capability to lower the detector s thermal noise to few or dozens of mK, and to use QIS technologies such as Josephson Parametric Amplifiers and photon counters (in-situ or itinerant) enable us to reach unprecedented sensitivities and faster scan rates. Here is presented an overview of the quantum sensing efforts at SQMS [1], focusing on theoretical advancements and experimental searches for Dark Sector particles (as dark matter candidates and not), gravitational waves, and precision measurements. The experiments conducted, or under preparation, include axion dark matter (DM) [2, 3], dark photon DM searches [4,5], light-shining-through-wall experiments [6], cavity-based searches for high frequency gravitational waves [7], and measurements of the electron magnetic moment [8]. Measurement of the proton spin structure at long distances

Measuring the spin structure of protons and neutrons tests our understanding of how they arise from quarks and gluons, the fundamental building blocks of nuclear matter. At long distances, the coupling constant of the strong interaction becomes large, requiring non-perturbative methods to calculate quantum chromodynamics processes, such as lattice gauge theory or effective field theories. In this work, we report proton spin structure measurements from scattering a polarized electron beam off polarized protons. The spin-dependent cross-sections were measured at large distances, corresponding to the region of low momentum transfer squared between 0.012 and 1.0GeV 2 . This kinematic range provides unique tests of chiral effective field theory predictions. Our results show that a complete description of the nucleon spin remains elusive, and call for further theoretical works, for example, in lattice quantum chromodynamics. Finally, our data extrapolated to the photon point agree with the Gerasimov–Drell–Hearn sum rule, a fundamental prediction of quantum field theory that relates the anomalous magnetic moment of the proton to its integrated spin-dependent cross-sections.

Insight into Structural, Electronic, Magnetic, Mechanical, and Thermodynamic Properties of Actinide Perovskite BaPuO{sub 3}

In this paper, we have performed a systematic investigation on structural, magnetic, electronic, mechanical, and thermodynamic properties of BaPuO{sub 3} perovskite within density functional theory (DFT) using generalized gradient approximations (GGA), onsite coulomb repulsion (GGA + U), and modified Becke-Johnson (mBJ). The calculated structural parameters were found in good agreement with the experimental results. A large value of magnetic moment equal to integer value of 4 μ{sub B} was obtained for the compound. The spin-polarized electronic band structure and density of states present 100% of spin polarization at Fermi level, resulting in half-metallic nature for the compound with spin-up states as metallic and spin- down states as a semiconducting. The elastic and mechanical properties have also been predicted. Moreover, we have calculated thermodynamic properties like Debye temperature (𝜃{sub D}), specific heat (C{sub V}), entropy (S), etc. using quasi-harmonic Debye model.

Data-driven estimates for light-quark-connected and strange-plus-disconnected hadronic g − 2 window quantities

A number of discrepancies have emerged between lattice computations and data-driven dispersive evaluations of the RBC/UKQCD intermediate-window-hadronic contribution to the muon anomalous magnetic moment. It is therefore interesting to obtain data-driven estimates for the light-quark-connected and strange-plus-disconnected components of this window quantity, allowing for a more detailed comparison between the lattice and data-driven approaches. The aim of this paper is to provide these estimates, extending the analysis to several other window quantities, including two windows designed to focus on the region in which the two-pion contribution is dominant. Clear discrepancies are observed for all light-quark-connected contributions considered, while good agreement with lattice results is found for strange-plus-disconnected contributions to the quantities for which corresponding lattice results exist. The largest of these discrepancies is that for the RBC/UKQCD intermediate window, where, as previously reported, our data-driven result, a μ W 1 , lqc = 198.9 ( 1.1 ) × 10 − 10 , is in significant tension with the results of 8 different recent lattice determinations. Our strategy is the same as recently employed in obtaining data-driven estimates for the light-quark-connected and strange-plus-disconnected components of the full leading-order hadronic vacuum polarization contribution to the muon anomalous magnetic moment. Updated versions of those earlier results are also presented, for completeness. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Electronic Structure and Related Band Parameters of Hexagonal Wurtzite Zn{sub 1−x}Mn{sub x}O Magnetic Semiconducting Alloys

The electronic band structure and related band parameters such as, lattice parameters, energy band gaps, density of states and magnetic moment of Zn{sub 1−x}Mn{sub x}O ternary system in the hypothetical hexagonal wurtzite structure have been investigated. The calculations are performed using a full-potential linearized augmented plane wave method based on density functional theory in the generalized gradient approximation of Perdew-Burke-Ernzerhof. The evolution of the features of interest with increasing the Mn doping concentration from 0 to 1 in the ZnO structure has been examined and discussed. Our findings show that the behaviour of all studied band parameters with respect to the alloy composition x is consistent with those reported experimentally in the literature. The present study may be useful for spintronics applications.

Ab Initio Investigation on Electronic, Magnetic, Mechanical, and Thermodynamic Properties of AMO{sub 3} (A = Eu, M = Ga, In) Perovskites

The structural, electronic, magnetic, elastic, and thermodynamic properties of cubic AMO{sub 3} perovskites (A = Eu, M = Ga, In) have been successfully studied within density functional theory using full-potential linearized augmented plane wave (FP-LAPW). The structural study reveals that both the compounds are stable in ferromagnetic states. The GGA + U calculated spin-polarized electronic band and density of states present the half-metallic nature of both the compounds. The magnetic moments calculated with different approximations were found to be approximately 6 μ{sub B} for EuGaO{sub 3} and approximately 7 μ{sub B} for EuInO{sub 3}. From elastic calculation, the three independent elastic constants (C{sub 11}, C{sub 12}, C{sub 44}) have been acquired to yield the mechanical properties like Young modulus (Y ), shear modulus (G), Poisson ratio (ν), and anisotropic factor (A). The calculated values of B/G show that both the compounds are ductile in nature. The thermodynamic study was also accomplished by exploring the thermodynamic parameters like specific heat, heat capacity, thermal expansion, Grüneisen parameter, Debye temperature, etc. within the temperature range 0 to 900 K and pressure range 0 to 50 GPa.

The Structural, Electronic, Magnetic, and Optical Properties of Mn{sub 2}ZrGa{sub 1−x}Ge{sub x} Heusler Alloys: First-Principles Calculations

The structural, electronic, magnetic, and optical properties of Mn-based Heusler Mn{sub 2}ZrGa{sub 1−x}Ge{sub x} (x = 0, 0.25, 0.5, 0.75, and 1) alloys are calculated by first-principles full-potential linearized augmented plane wave plus local orbital (FP-LAPW+lo) method. It is found that Mn{sub 2}ZrGa{sub 1−x}Ge{sub x} alloys are half-metallic ferrimagnetic and their magnetic moments are in good agreement with the Slater–Pauling relationship. The calculations reveal that all alloys have a pseudo-gap in the majority-spin channel except for x = 0.75 and x = 1 which have a real gap in the majority-spin channel. The spin polarization is quite large for whole series, and it reaches to a value of 100% for x = 0.75 and x = 1. Our calculated results clearly show that with the Ge substitution, the lattice parameter linearly decreases while the bulk modulus increases. Moreover, the calculated formation energies confirm that these alloys are stable chemically. The optical properties, including the real and imaginary parts of the dielectric function, reflectivity, and absorption spectra, were also investigated. The results show that the dominant behavior, at energy below 1 eV, is due to interactions of free electrons in the system. The increment of Ge concentration leads to an increase in the plasma frequency of metallic spin channel.
