Modular Integrated Gas High Temperature Reactor (MIGHTR) is being designed by a multidisciplinary team of nuclear, mechanical, and structural engineers under the support of a DOE-NE Advanced Reactor Demonstration Program’s Advanced Reactor Concepts-20 (ARC-20) award. The objective of this ARC-20 project is to deliver a conceptual design for the proposed MIGHTR in 3 years and support its commercialization as a safe and low-cost HTGR. Argonne National Laboratory is responsible for the design and analysis of the reactor cavity cooling system (RCCS) as a safety system for passive decay heat removal of the reactor concept. Work performed by Argonne also includes the thermal hydraulics analysis of the primary heat transport system including reactor pressure vessel (RPV) internals for normal operation, shutdown, and accident conditions. This first semi-annual report summarizes the progress made at Argonne on the two tasks since the start of the project. For the RCCS design task, high-level design work was performed including identification of design requirements for the conceptual MIGHTR RCCS and initial design calculations. The baseline dimensions of the MIGHTR RCCS were derived from scoping analysis results and preliminary steady state performance was estimated. At the initial stage of the primary system analysis task, the primary system thermal fluids model for the MIGHTR core was outlined to use a simplified two-dimensional model to predict the temperature distribution and coolant pressure losses in the fuel assembly blocks.

Modular Wide-bandgap String Inverters for Low-cost Medium-voltage Transformerless PV Systems

The proposed technology combines advances in wide-bandgap power electronics with breakthroughs in distributed and decentralized control to produce ultra-low-cost medium-voltage transformerless PV inverters that are composed of stackable lightweight blocks. Taken together, the proposed circuit designs and accompanying control strategies will yield integrated control+circuit (C2) blocks, each comprising a converter and local controller, that can be assembled in a modular fashion to obtain distributed conversion interfaces for next-generation commercial and utility-scale PV systems. We will utilize SiC devices to obtain C2 blocks that can individually operate at a voltage and power in excess of 1 kV and 100 kW, respectively, such that ensembles of series-connected blocks perform direct dc to three-phase ac conversion at medium voltages (e.g., 12 kV–35 kV) and at multi-MW power levels.

Modular Design of High Temperature and Pressure Heat Exchangers Using 3D Printing

Functionally graded material (FGM), leveraged by latest additive manufacturing (AM) technologies, can add significant values to high temperature applications such as the HTR in supercritical sCO2 Brayton cycles. The project was focused on fabricating FGMs with complex geometries such as flow channels using DED and L-PBF technologies to support the modular design concept in achieving high-performance and low-cost high temperature recuperators for the sCO2 Brayton cycle. Samples printed from the base materials including both SS 316 and Inconel 625 have mostly met the material standards. L-PBF samples have achieved the fine feature sizes with good geometrical accuracy. In addition, DED has demonstrated its printability on LPBF part with both direct transition and using 50/50 mixed powders. Despite various challenging, the project helped advance the current state-of-the-art of DED technology in terms of printing fine geometries.

Artificial Intelligence-Enhanced, Multi-Level, Modular System Design

As Moore’s Law and Dennard Scaling come to an end, it is becoming increasingly important to develop non-von Neumann computing architectures that can perform low-power computing in the domains of scientific computing, artificial intelligence, embedded systems, and edge computing. Next-generation computing technologies, such as neuromorphic computing and quantum computing, have the potential to revolutionize computing. However, in order to make progress in these fields, it is necessary to fundamentally change the current computing paradigm by codesigning systems across all system level, from materials to software. Because skilled labor is limited in the field of next-generation computing, we are developing artificial intelligence-enhanced tools to automate the codesign and co-discovery of next-generation computers. Here, we develop a method called Modular and Multi-level MAchine Learning (MAMMAL) which is able to perform analog codesign and co-discovery across multiple system levels, spanning devices to circuits. We prototype MAMMAL by using it to design simple passive analog low-pass filters. We also explore methods to incorporate uncertainty quantification into MAMMAL and to accelerate MAMMAL by using emerging technologies, such as crossbar arrays. Ultimately, we believe that MAMMAL will enable rapid progress in developing next-generation computers by automating the codesign and co-discovery of electronic systems.

Securing Small Modular Reactors in Urban Environments

Current small modular reactor (SMR) deployment use cases consider both rural and urban deployments, depending on the operational in-country needs for clean and reliable sources of energy. Many studies have been conducted analyzing security in rural and remote deployment locations, but this study looks at the physical security implications of an SMR placed in an urban environment and its uses for electricity production, district heating, and process heating. SMRs used for electricity production, district heating, and process heating may be key sources of both energy infrastructure and commercial infrastructure within a city and a State. As a result, long-term shutdowns could have a serious impact on a State’s overall energy or commercial production. Therefore, operators may consider further security applications to protect an SMR plant from physical attacks against both radiological sabotage and sabotage acts that could result in the SMR facility being offline for a significant amount of time. In this study, the team designed and analyzed a physical protection system (PPS) for securing an urban SMR facility against acts of radiological sabotage and sabotage acts that could disrupt the facility’s long-term operation. Additionally, this work analyzed the nuanced security issues related to siting an SMR near an urban environment (versus in a rural environment). The result of these analyses includes recommendations for PPSs for urban SMR facilities used for energy production, district heating, and process heating.

Small Modular Reactor and Microreactor Security-by-Design Lessons Learned: Integrated PPS Designs

U.S. nuclear power facilities face increasing challenges in meeting dynamic security requirements caused by evolving and expanding threats while keeping costs reasonable to make nuclear energy competitive. The past approach has often included implementing security features after a facility has been designed and without attention to optimization, which can lead to cost overruns. Incorporating security into the design process can provide robust, cost-effective, and sufficient physical protection systems. The purpose of this report is to capture lessons learned by the Advanced Reactor Safeguards and Security (ARSS) program that may be beneficial for other advanced and small modular reactor (SMR) vendors to use when developing security systems and postures. This report will capture relevant information that can be used in the security-by-design (SeBD) process for SMR and microreactor vendors.
