Performance improvements in silicon flat-plate cells and modules

This paper reports the development of a flat-plate module based on highly efficient ion-implanted silicon solar cells. The cells developed in this work are 53 sq cm in area and have exhibited AM 1.5 efficiencies of over 18 percent. The use of back surface reflectors to reduce module operating temperature is discussed. A comparison of various approaches to cell design is made, and module test data for these designs are presented. A comparison of float zone and Czochralski silicon is made. Module efficiency of over 15 percent (at 25 C) is reported.

Response of a Fabry-Perot cavity to phase modulated light

A solution to the lock-in detection method, which is valid for arbitrary values of the modulation frequency, is described. The theory for determining frequency modulation of a single frequency laser is presented. The theoretical predictions for the optimum modulation index are compared to experimental solutions for the quasi-static regime. Signal line shapes for first, second, and third harmonic generations are derived and examined. It is noted that there is good correlation between experimental and quasi-static theory data for the relation between small modulation frequency and resonance linewidth.

Fast autotuning of a hydrogen maser by cavity Q modulation

A new fast autotuner for the hydrogen maser was implemented. By modulating the cavity, a phase shift in the maser output signal is induced which is proportional to the cavity tuning error. The phase shift is detected and fed back to a varactor tuner to stabilize the cavity against long-term drifts. Also, a PIN-diode cavity modulator which gives no incidental frequency shift over a very wide range of operation was developed. Modulated at over 200 Hz, it allows variations in maser cavity frequency to be compensated with a loop gain greater than 1000. Compensation of incidental amplitude modulation of the output was demonstrated.

A concatenated coded modulation scheme for error control

A concatenated coded modulation scheme for error control in data communications is presented. The scheme is achieved by concatenating a Reed-Solomon outer code and a bandwidth efficient block inner code for M-ary PSK modulation. Error performance of the scheme is analyzed for an AWGN channel. It is shown that extremely high reliability can be attained by using a simple M-ary PSK modulation inner code and relatively powerful Reed-Solomon outer code. Furthermore, if an inner code of high effective rate is used, the bandwidth expansion required by the scheme due to coding will be greatly reduced. The proposed scheme is particularly effective for high speed satellite communication for large file transfer where high reliability is required. Also presented is a simple method for constructing block codes for M-ary PSK modulation. Some short M-ary PSK codes with good minimum squared Euclidean distance are constructed. These codes have trellis structure and hence can be decoded with a soft decision Viterbi decoding algorithm.

Advanced EMU electrochemically regenerable CO2 and moisture absorber module breadboard

The applicability of the Electrochemically Regenerable Carbon Dioxide and Moisture Absorption Technology to the advanced extravehicular mobility unit was demonstrated by designing, fabricating, and testing a breadboard Absorber Module and an Electrochemical Regenerator. Test results indicated that the absorber module meets or exceeds the carbon dioxide removal requirements specified for the design and can meet the moisture removal requirement when proper cooling is provided. CO2 concentration in the vent gas stream was reduced from 0.52 to 0.027 kPa (3.9 to 0.20 mm Hg) for the full five hour test period. Vent gas dew point was reduced from inlet values of 294 K (69 F) to 278 K (41 F) at the outlet. The regeneration of expended absorbent was achieved by the electrochemical method employed in the testing. An absorbent bed using microporous hydrophobic membrane sheets with circulating absorbent is shown to be the best approach to the design of an Absorber Module based on sizing and performance. Absorber Module safety design, comparison of various absorbents and their characteristics, moisture absorption and cooling study and subsystem design and operation time-lining study were also performed.

InGaAs/GaAs multiquantum-well electroabsorption modulator with integrated waveguide

A monolithically integrated guided-wave modulator has been realized by using molecular-beam epitaxial regrowth and ion-milling techniques. The guiding and modulating regions consist, respectively, of In-doped GaAs and GaAs/In(0.34)Ga(0.66)As strained-layer multiquantum wells. Modulation is achieved by field-enhanced electroabsorption in the multiquantum wells. The insertion loss of the modulator is 0.9 dB, and the transmission loss in the guides is less than or equal to 1 dB/cm. The temporal response of similar GaAs/InGaAs as-grown photodiodes to pulsed laser excitation is characterized by a rise time of 115 psec.

The performance of Schottky diodes as far-infrared modulators

The performance as a THz-frequency modulator of a small-area Schottky diode mounted in a corner-cube antenna is evaluated, including the effects of carrier inertia and dielectric relaxation. Calculations are performed for a 1.4-micron diameter diode operating at a carrier frequency of 2.252 THz and a modulation frequency of 8 GHz. The phase modulation is found to completely dominate the amplitude modulation. The performance is shown to be degraded well below the plasma frequency in the undepleted epilayer due to the presence of a second resonance caused by the interaction of the barrier capacitance and the effective inductance due to carrier inertia. An increase in epilayer doping (reducing the diode radius) may improve the single-sideband conversion efficiency by about 20 dB.

Recent achievements in module reliability research

After 10 years of extensive research on crystalline-silicon flat-plate photovoltaic modules, the emphasis of recent reliability research has shifted to the emerging first-generation thin-film amorphous-silicon modules. These modules share much in common with their crystalline precursors, but also include many materials and processes that demand the development of reliability technologies. Key research thrusts include light-induced effects, cell corrosion, thermal diffusion, hot-spot heating, and electrical isolation of the cells from the module exterior. Research goals and recent achievements are described in each of these areas.

Space station architecture, module, berthing hub, shell assembly, berthing mechanism and utility connection channel

A Space Station includes a plurality of modules, and berthing hubs, joined by interconnections which are sideways connectable. The modules and hubs are fastened together in a trianglar configuration in three dimensions. The interconnections include a pair of opposed, axially aligned, flanged ports, and a clamp latch formed from a plurality of sections hinged along their length and extending circumferentially around the flanged ports. A utilities connection channel extends between ports. The channel has a shell with utilities connectors movable between an extended position to mating connectors in the modules and a withdrawn position. Assembly sequence and common module shell structure is detailed.

Advanced modulation technology development for earth station demodulator applications

The purpose of this contract was to develop a high rate (200 Mbps), bandwidth efficient, modulation format using low cost hardware, in 1990's technology. The modulation format chosen is 16-ary continuous phase frequency shift keying (CPFSK). The implementation of the modulation format uses a unique combination of a limiter/discriminator followed by an accumulator to determine transmitted phase. An important feature of the modulation scheme is the way coding is applied to efficiently gain back the performance lost by the close spacing of the phase points.

A lower bound on the minimum Euclidean distance of trellis-coded modulation schemes

A lower bound on the minimum free Euclidean distance of trellis-coded modulation (TCM) is derived that guarantees the existence of good TCM codes of any complexity. The bound is used to compare trellis codes combined with phase-shift keying, pulse amplitude modulation, and quadrature amplitude-shift keying modulation. This random coding bound is the first lower bound on the free distance of trellis codes, is tighter than any upper bound for large constraint lengths, and predicts the asymptotic performance of TCM when the complexity of the code becomes large. The bound can be used with any code rate and any modulation scheme and shows that the free distance increases linearly with the constraint length for large values of the constraint length.

Multiple-Trellis-Coded Modulation

Theoretical gain over simple multiple-phase-shift keying at least 2 to 3 decibels. Multiple-trellis-coded modulation scheme combined with M-ary modulation shows theoretically to yield asymptotic gains in performance over uncoded multiple-phase-shift keying, while employing symmetric multiple-phase-shift signal constellations and avoiding code catastrophe. Suitable for satellite and terrestrial-mobile/satellite communications or other communications requiring burst-error correction. Extended to such higher dimensional modulations as quadrature amplitude modulation.
