Thermal buckling and post-buckling of symmetric composite plates

The thermally induced buckling and postbuckling behavior of square and rectangular simply supported composite plates is examined using the Rayleigh-Ritz method in conjunction with the second variations of the total potential energy. Spatially uniform and nonuniform temperatures and laminates with material axes that are not aligned with the plate edges (skewed material axes) are considered. Results of the analysis are presented in graphic form.

Extension-bend-twist coupling behavior of thin-walled advanced composite beams with initial twist

An analytical model is developed for assessing the extension-bend-twist coupling behavior of nonhomogeneous anisotropic beams with initial twist. The model is formulated as a coupled two-dimensional boundary value problem, where the displacement solutions are defined with pretwist-dependent functions that represent the extension, bending, and torsion, and unknown functions that represent local in-plane deformations and out-of-plane cross-section warping. The unknown deformation functions are determined by applying the principle of minimum potential energy to a discretized representation of the cross section. Numerical results are presented that fully verify this approach and illustrate the strong extension-twist coupling behavior present in pretwisted beams with thin-wall laminated composite cross sections as a function of ply angle, initial twist level, and initial twist axis location. Cross-sections analyzed include; thin laminated rectangles with either asymmetric or symmetric ply stacking sequences and a thin-wall single cell D-section composed of a graphite/epoxy woven cloth.

Theoretical study of the spectroscopy of B2

A study is made of the singlet, triplet, and quintet states of B2 below 45,000/cm at the multireference configuration-interaction level. The stronger bonding in B2, as compared with Al2, manifests itself in the potential energy curves. In B2, five of the six states dissociating to the ground state atoms are bound, compared with only two for Al2. Radiative lifetimes are reported for the lowest vibrational level of many of the bound triplet states of B2.

Gravitational spreading of Danu, Freyja and Maxwell Montes, Venus

The potential energy of elevated terrain tends to drive the collapse of the topography. This process of gravitational spreading is likely to be more important on Venus than on Earth because the higher surface temperature weakens the crust. The highest topography on Venus is Ishtar Terra. The high plateau of Lakshmi Planum has an average elevation of 3 km above mean planetary radius, and is surrounded by mountain belts. Freyja, Danu, and Maxwell Montes rise, on average, an additional 3, 0.5, and 5 km above the plateau, respectively. Recent high resolution Magellan radar images of this area, east of approx. 330 deg E, reveal widespread evidence for gravity spreading. Some observational evidence is described for gravity spreading and the implications are discussed in terms of simple mechanical models. Several simple models predict that gravity spreading should be an important process on Venus. One difficulty in using remote observations to infer interior properties is that the observed features may not have formed in response to stresses which are still active. Several causes of surface topography are briefly examined.

Theoretical study of the low-lying bound states of O2

It is demonstrated that a complete-active-space self-consistent-field (CASSCF) (2p)/MRCI + Q (multireference configuration interaction with a Davidson correction) description in a (13s8p6d 4f2g)/((5s4p3d 2f1g) atomic natural orbits (ANO) basis set supplemented with diffuse functions provides a quantitative description of the six lowest states of O2. The calculated potentials are within 0.05 eV (1.2 kilocal/mol) of accurate experimental results. The importance of substantially expanding the primitive basis set has been investigated, and it is demonstrated that such expansions yield insignificant improvement in the spectroscopic constants. Potential energy curves have also been reported for the weakly bound states of O2. The 5Pi(g) state is estimated to have a D(e) of 0.16 +/- 0.03 eV. The upper bound of D(e) is found to be sufficiently large that the importance of this state as a precursor for the formation of O2 (b 1Sigma(t)(+)) and O(1S) should be reconsidered.

Space Shuttle launch pad rescue plan

The final preparation of the Space Shuttle Orbiter for flight involves the loading of large quantities of hazardous propellants. Additionally, many pyrotechnially operated mechanical joints are armed and ready for flight. The personnel manning at the pad is minimized during these operations to reduce the risk. Upon completion of propellant loading, the flight crew must be boarded onto the vehicle which at this point has tremendous potential energy. Plans have been made to safely and quickly evacuate the crew should some unforeseen contigency occur. Both aided and unaided egress scenarios have been planned. Personnel protective equipment is an important consideration to assure the highest chance for survival. Rapid movement of personnel is enhanced by the use of the slidewire system and specially prepared armored personnel carriers. The end result is a system that provides a reasonable chance of survival should an emergency occur during late countdown at the pad.

Buckling of imperfect, anisotropic, ring-stiffened cylinders under combined loads

The objectives of this study is to develop an analysis to predict loads of ring-stiffened anisotropic cylinders subject to axial compression, torsion and internal pressure. This structure is modeled as a branched shell. A nonlinear axisymmetric prebuckling equilibrium state is assumed which is amenable to exact solution within each branch. Axisymmetric geometric imperfections are included. Buckling displacements are represented by a Fourier series in the circumferential coordinate and the finite element method in the axial coordinate. Application of Trefftz criterion to the second variation of the total potential energy leads to a nonlinear eigenvalue problem for the buckling load and mode. Results are presented for both unstiffened and ring-stiffened cylinders in the form of buckling interaction diagrams. Imperfections can cause an unexpected buckling mode in the ring web which would not occur for the perfect structure, and pressurization diminishes the benefit of adding rings to the unstiffened shell to increase the buckling load. The implementation of the analysis methodology into a structural sizing algorithm is discussed.

Combined compressive and shear buckling analysis of hypersonic aircraft sandwich panels

The combined-load (compression and shear) buckling equations were established for orthotropic sandwich panels by using the Rayleigh-Ritz method to minimize the panel total potential energy. The resulting combined-load buckling equations were used to generate buckling interaction curves for super-plastically-formed/diffusion-bonded titanium truss-core sandwich panels and titanium honeycomb-core sandwich panels having the same specific weight. The relative combined-load buckling strengths of these two types of sandwich panels are compared with consideration of their sandwich orientations. For square and nearly square panels of both types, the combined load always induces symmetric buckling. As the panel aspect ratios increase, antisymmetric buckling will show up when the loading is shear-dominated combined loading. The square panel (either type) has the highest combined buckling strength, but the combined load buckling strength drops sharply as the panel aspect ratio increases. For square panels, the truss-core sandwich panel has higher compression-dominated load buckling strength. However, for shear dominated loading, the square honeycomb-core sandwich panel has higher shear-dominated combined load buckling strength.

Dynamics of phase separation of binary fluids

The results of molecular-dynamics studies of surface-tension-dominated spinodal decomposition of initially well-mixed binary fluids in the absence and presence of gravity are presented. The growth exponent for the domain size and the decay exponent of the potential energy of interaction between the two species with time are found to be 0.6 +/- 0.1, inconsistent with scaling arguments based on dimensional analysis.

Delamination analysis of tapered laminated composites under tensile loading

A study was conducted to analyze tapered composite laminates under tensile loading. A tapered construction made of S2/SP250 glass/epoxy laminate was used to achieve a thickness reduction using three consecutive dropped plies over a distance of 60 ply thicknesses. The principle of minimum complementary potential energy was used to determine interlaminar stresses. The interlaminar peel stress distribution shows a higher tensile intensity at the taper/thin portion juncture. The total strain energy release rate is determined using a simplified membrane model. Results are compared with a finite element simulation.

Comment on broadening of water microwave lines by collisions with helium atoms

Earlier theoretical descriptions of interaction forces and collision dynamics in the H2O-He system (Palma et al., 1988; Green et al., 1991) are improved by calculating the interaction at additional orientations and by including diffuse functions in the molecular orbital expansion basis set. The improvements make substantial changes to the potential energy surface, but make only small changes in predicted microwave pressure broadening coefficients. The qualitative temperature dependence and relative widths of different lines appear to be converged with respect to successive improvements to the theoretical description of this system. Remaining discrepancies with available data must reflect problems with the experimental values.

A variational approach to three-dimensional elasticity solutions of laminated composite plates

The displacements in a laminated composite are represented as products of two sets of unknown functions, one of which is only a function of the thickness coordinate and the other is a function of the in-plane coordinates (i.e., separation of variables approach), and the minimization of the total potential energy is reduced to a sequence of iterative linear problems. Analytical solutions are developed for cross-ply and angle-ply laminated composite rectangular plates. The solution for simply-supported cross-ply plates under sinusoidal transverse load reduces to that of Pagano. Numerical results for stresses and is placements for antisymmetric angle-ply laminates are presented. The three-dimensional elasticity solutions developed are important because they can be used to study the behavior of composite laminates, in addition to serving as reference for approximate solutions by numerical methods and two-dimensional theories.

The solution of coupled Schroedinger equations using an extrapolation method

In this paper, extrapolation to the limit in a finite-difference method is applied to solve a system of coupled Schroedinger equations. This combination results in a method that only requires knowledge of the potential energy functions for the system. This numerical procedure has several distinct advantages over the more conventional methods. Namely, initial guesses for the term values are not needed; assumptions need be made about the behavior of the wavefunctions, such as the slope or magnitude in the nonclassical region; and the algorithm is easy to implement, has a firm mathematical foundation, and provides error estimates. Moreover, the method is less sensitive to round-off error than other methods since a small number of mesh points is used and it can be implemented on small computers. A comparison of the method with another numerical method shows results agreeing within 1 part in 10 exp 4.

The time-dependent response of 3- and 5-layer sandwich beams

Simple sandwich beam models have been developed to study the effect of the time-dependent constitutive properties of fiber-reinforced polymer matrix composites, considered for use in orbiting precision segmented reflectors, on the overall deformations. The 3- and 5-layer beam models include layers representing the face sheets, the core, and the adhesive. The static elastic deformation response of the sandwich beam models to a midspan point load is studied using the principle of stationary potential energy. In addition to quantitative conclusions, several assumptions are discussed which simplify the analysis for the case of more complicated material models. It is shown that the simple three-layer model is sufficient in many situations.

State-to-state rates for the D + H2(v = 1, j = 1) yield HD(v-prime, j-prime) + H reaction - Predictions and measurements

A fully quantal wavepacket approach to reactive scattering in which the best available H3 potential energy surface was used enabled a comparison with experimentally determined rates for the D + H2(v = 1, j = 1) yield HD(v-prime = 0, 1, 2; j-prime) + H reaction at significantly higher total energies (1.4 to 2.25 electron volts) than previously possible. The theoretical results are obtained over a sufficient range of conditions that a detailed simulation of the experiment was possible, thus making this a definitive comparison of experiment and theory. Good to excellent agreement is found for the vibrational branching ratios and for the rotational distributions within each product vibrational level. However, the calculated rotational distributions are slightly hotter than the experimentally measured ones.

Theoretical characterization of the reaction CH3 +OH yields CH3OH yeilds products: The (1)CH2 + H2O, H2 + HCOH, and H2 + H2CO channels

The potential energy surface (PES) for the CH3OH system has been characterized for the (1)CH2 + H2O, H2 + HCOH, and H2 + H2CO product channels using complete-active-space self-consistent-field (CASSCF) gradient calculations to determine the stationary point geometries and frequencies followed by CASSCF/internally contracted configuration-interaction (CCI) calculations to refine the energetics. The (1)CH2 + H2O channel is found to have no barrier. The long range interaction is dominated by the dipole-dipole term, which orients the respective dipole moments parallel to each other but pointing in opposite directions. At shorter separations there is a dative bond structure in which a water lone pair donates into the empty a" orbital of CH2. Subsequent insertion of CH2 into an OH bond of water have barriers located at -5.2 kcal/mol and 1.7 kcal/mol, respectively, with respect to CH3 + OH. From comparison of the computed energetics of the reactants and products to known thermochemical data it is estimated that the computed PES is accurate to plus or minus 2 kcal/mol.

Cloud radiative forcing effects on observed and simulated global energetics

The research objectives are the following: (1) to examine how cloud-radiation processes generate/destroy available potential energy by altering both meridional and zonal temperature gradient; (2) to investigate how the atmospheric dynamic fields respond to the cloud-altered mass distributions through the energy conversion circuit; and (3) to examine how the improved version of CCM1 simulates observationally obtained cloud-radiative forcing and its associated energetics and circulations. Significant accomplishments in the past year towards obtaining these objectives and the focus of current research and plans for next year are discussed.
