Theory and Practical Design of Phase-locked Receivers, Volume I

This is Volume I of a two-volume work on the theory, of phase-locked receivers, with pertinent reference material on practical receiver design. Volume I is primarily devoted to the performance of carrier-tracking loops, including a rigorous treatment of narrow-band systems having IF limiters. The bulk of the work is based on a theoretical linear model, but a nonlinear method is also presented to predict behavior near the threshold. The emphasis throughout the work is toward completeness, simplicity, and internal consistency of the material assembled. Part I of this Volume is an exposition of the theory, the resulting equations, and the design philosophy that have enabled the phase-lock concept to evolve into the basic principle underlying the most sensitive receivers il, the world today. Part II is a condensed version of Part I, intended as a quick reference to formulas, definitions, and salient design considerations.

A practical method of determining water current velocities and diffusion coefficients in coastal waters by remote sensing techniques

A simplified procedure is presented for determining water current velocities and diffusion coefficients. Dye drops which form dye patches in the receiving water are made from an aircraft. The changes in position and size of the patches are recorded from two flights over the area. The simplified data processing procedure requires only that the ground coordinates about the dye patches be determined at the time of each flight. With an automatic recording coordinatograph for measuring coordinates and a computer for processing the data, this technique provides a practical method of determining circulation patterns and mixing characteristics of large aquatic systems. This information is useful in assessing the environmental impact of waste water discharges and for industrial plant siting.

Contamination threats to critical surfaces from handling and storage practices.

Review of the procedures and results of a program designed to remove the threat of sources of molecular and particulate contamination of critical optical, electrical, and mechanical elements in spacecraft. The results of recent contamination-probing thermal-vacuum tests indicate that some of the materials and practices commonly used to protect critical surfaces from molecular or particulate contamination can themselves represent significant threats. These contamination sources include clean-room and clean-tent materials, gloves, tissues, and covering or packaging materials. Mass and infrared spectral analyses of these materials and the environments and instruments exposed to them show that the contaminants are mostly plasticizers, slip or antistatic agents, and binders used in the manufacture of these products. Products of particular threat include vinyl gloves, boots, clean-tent walls, and some polyethylene sheets and bags. Techniques for reducing these threats are discussed.
