Compositional interrelationships of mare basalts from bulk chemical and melt inclusion studies

Petrographic and electron microprobe data (355 new analyses) are presented on melt inclusions and their host phases found in a reexamination of the Apollo thin section collection. In addition, occurrences of early armalcolite and ilmenite are described and new data are presented on quench-pyroxene compositions and melt inclusions in chromian ulvospinel. Compositional differences between mare basalt types and their melt inclusions are illustrated with plots of compositions normalized to a terrestrial lava composition, that of the 1965 Makaopuhi lava lake. The plots emphasize the fact that mare basalts are not significantly differentiated relative to the compositions that are possible as defined by the melt inclusion data. Distribution coefficients for Fe and Mg partitioning between trapped melt and host olivine and ilmenite are calculated and show a range about probable equilibrium values. It is suggested that the crystallization sequence olivine-ilmenite-plagioclase-pyroxene defined by the melt inclusion data may be the actual sequence which obtained generally for Apollo 11 and 17 mare basalts just prior to eruption.

Intumescent coatings based on 4,4 prime-dinitrosulfanilide

Nitroaromatic amine-based intumescent coatings which offer improved thermal protection to a substrate by reducing the backface temperature rise have been developed. The intumescent monomer agent is 4,4 prime-dinitrosulfanilide. This agent has an intumescent temperature of 220 deg C, compared with 300 deg C for the ammonium salt of 1,4-nitroaniline-2-sulfonic acid and offers a twelve-fold reduction in water solubility over this compound. On the basis of differential thermal analysis and screening tests, a chlorinated polyolifin epoxy-reactive butadiene acrylonitrile rubber blend was selected as a flame quenching binder.

Modified chemiluminescent NO analyzer accurately measures NOX

Installation of molybdenum nitric oxide (NO)-to-higher oxides of nitrogen (NOx) converter in chemiluminescent gas analyzer and use of air purge allow accurate measurements of NOx in exhaust gases containing as much as thirty percent carbon monoxide (CO). Measurements using conventional analyzer are highly inaccurate for NOx if as little as five percent CO is present. In modified analyzer, molybdenum has high tolerance to CO, and air purge substantially quenches NOx destruction. In test, modified chemiluminescent analyzer accurately measured NO and NOx concentrations for over 4 months with no denegration in performance.

Effect of discontinuities as a means to alleviate thermal expansion mismatch damage in laminar composites

An investigation of Nichrome/tungsten laminar composites showed that intentionally introduced discontinuities, such as perforations through or grooves on the surface of the matrix laminae, improved thermal expansion mismatch damage resistance. It was found that specimens having smooth matrix laminate surfaces were virtually destroyed by delamination in 21 or fewer fast cool cycles in which they were water quenched from 981 C. Specimens having interior matrix laminae with discontinuities and relatively thin, nondiscontinuous, surface matrix laminae resisted 50 similar cycles without evident delamination damage.

Flight IV technical report for experiment 74-37 contained polycrystalline solidification in low-G

Experiments were performed to study the effect of a low-gravity environment on the columnar-to-equiaxed transition (CET) during polycrystalline solidification. Solutions of H2O-30 wt% NH4Cl and H2O-37 wt% NH4Cl were solidified in semicylindrical molds with radial heat extraction. Both solutions were quenched from the same soak temperature (90 C); the respective superheat temperatures were, therefore, approximately 57 and 23 C. The lower superheat resulted in a completely columnar structure, and the higher superheat resulted in a 1/3 columnar - 2/3 equiaxed microstructure; these results were independent of the relationship between heat flow direction and gravity. Grain multiplication mechanisms observed were showering, thermal inversion driven convection cells, and compositionally induced density inversion driven convection cells.

The effect of minor additions of titanium on the fracture toughness of Fe-12Ni alloys at 77K

Titanium additions ranging from 0.18 to 0.99 atomic percent and heat treatments of 2 hours at 550, 685 and 820 C respectively followed by a water quench were considered. Cubic and rectangular shaped inclusions were noted in the SEM fractographs of the alloys with the Ti additions. A fine precipitate was observed by TEM for the Fe-12Ni-0.18Ti alloys heat treated at 550 C; this precipitate was not observed for the 685 and 820 C heat treatments of the same alloy. Auger mappings of the fracture surfaces indicated a weak to moderate association of the interstitials C, N and O with Ti, the degree of which depended on the particular interstitial and the heat treatment temperature.

Preparation of amorphous ferromagnetic materials through containerless solidification

The work reported herein consists of: (1) the ground based experiments; (2) the analysis of the ground based specimens; (3) the flight experiment; (4) failure to melt analysis; and (5) recommendations and conclusions. The ground based experimental work yielded new results in terms of understanding the viscoelastic properties of ferromagnetic metallic glasses and the variation of viscosity through the glass transition temperature from metallic glass to crystalline solid. This last result was of importance in predicting what glass can be produced at lower quench rates.

The pumping mechanism for the neon-nitrogen nuclear excited laser

In order to determine the physical processes for pumping this laser, a detailed study of the afterglow system has been performed. The pumping mechanism has been found to be collisional-radiative electron-ion recombination. Microwave quenching of both the laser and spontaneous afterglow light have shown conclusively that a recombination process directly produces a nitrogen atom in either the upper laser level or, more likely, in a higher lying energy level which rapidly de-excites to the upper laser level.

Pressureless sintered beta prime-Si3N4 solid solution: Fabrication, microstructure, and strength

Si3N4, AlN, and Al2O3 were used as basic constituents in a study of the pressureless sintering of beta prime-Si3N4 solid solution as a function of temperature. Y2O3-SiO2 additions were used to promote liquid-phase sintering. The sintered specimens were characterized with respect to density, microstructure, strength, oxidation, and thermal shock resistance. Density greater than 98 percent of theoretical was achieved by pressureless sintering at 1750 C. The microstructure consisted essentially of fine-grained beta prime-Si3N4 solid solution as the major phase. Modulus of rupture strengths up to 483 MPa were achieved at moderate temperature (1000 C), but decreased to 228 MPa at 1380 C. This substantial strength loss was attributed to a glassy grain boundary phase formed during cooling from the sintering temperature. The best oxidation resistance was exhibited by a composition containing 3 mol % Y2O3-SiO2 additives. Water quench thermal shock resistance was equivalent to that of reaction sintered silicon nitride but lower than hot-pressed silicon nitride.

Redox equilibria of multivalent ions in silicate glasses

Experimental studies were made on the compositional dependence of the redox equilibrium of Eu in synthetic silicate liquids, together with an empirical model describing the observed compositional dependence. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) was used to measure the concentration ratio of Eu(2+) to Eu(3+) in various glasses formed by rapidly quenching silicate liquids. The compositional field studied comprised mixtures of SiO2, TiO2, Al2O3, CaO, MgO, and Na2O. The proposed model describes the Eu(2+)/Eu(3+) ratio over the entire compositional field in terms of parameters easily related to each glass composition. The general applicability and utility of the model is further demonstrated by its application to the Fe(2+)-Fe(3+), Ce(3+)-Ce(4+), and Cr(3+)-Cr(6+) redox reactions in binary alkali oxide silicate glasses of Li, Na, and K.

Model for premixed turbulent flames

Flame speed and mean degree of reaction profiles are determined for an ensemble mean one-dimensional premixed turbulent flame. Elementary closure models are employed to treat turbulence closure problems arising from the nonlinear convective and chemical reaction rate terms in the time-dependent fuel conservation equation; a constant eddy diffusivity is useed to model correlation terms derived from the convective term. An expression developed for fuel consumption is solved to obtain the turbulent flame speed and the variation of mean fuel mass fraction across the flame. Comparison of the numerical analysis with experimental data indicates the importance of the quenching of the combustion reaction in high-wavenumber eddies.

Effects of heat treating PM Rene' 95 slightly below the gamma-prime solvus

An investigation was performed on As-HIP Rene' 95 to obtain additional information on the variation of the amount of gamma-prime with solutioning temperatures near the gamma-prime solvus temperature and the resulting effects on tensile and stress rupture strengths of As-HIP Rene' 95. The amount of gamma-prime phase was found to increase at a rate of about 0.5% per degree Celsius as the temperature decreased from the solvus temperature to about 50 C below the gamma-prime solvus temperature. The change in the amount of gamma-prime phase with decreasing solutioning temperature was observed to be primarily associated with decreasing solubilities of Al+Ti+Nb and increasing solubility of Cr in the gamma phase. For As-HIP Rene' 95 solutioned at either 1107 or 1135 C and subsequently water-quenched and double aged for 4 hours at 815 C followed by 24 hours at 650 C, the higher solution temperature resulted in significantly greater yield strengths at room temperature and 650 C as well as a greater room-temperature ultimate strength. Also, longer stress rupture lives at 650 C were associated with the higher solution temperature.

Charge exchange of metastable 2D oxygen ions with N2 in the thermosphere

The charge exchange of metastable 2D oxygen ions with N2 in the thermosphere is investigated through analysis of N2 (+) measurements and related data obtained by the Atmosphere Explorer-C satellite. The rate coefficient for the charge exchange process is found to be 5 + or - 1.7 times 10 to the negative 10th power cu cm per sec. A rate coefficient is also developed for atomic oxygen quenching of the metastable 2D oxygen ions.

Diffusion of hydrogen through platinum membranes at high pressures and temperatures

The diffusion of hydrogen through platinum membranes has been measured at 450, 500, 550 and 600 C at 2000 bar pressure, using the hydrogen sensor technique. Ag + AgCl + 3M HCl was the starting solution inside the platinum tube. Hydrogen diffuses out of the platinum tube into a system containing Fe2O3 + Fe3O4 + H2O; that is, a solution with a fixed hydrogen fugacity. After quench, the drop in hydrogen fugacity inside the platinum tube was calculated from measurements of pH and chloride molality. The hydrogen fugacity is initially roughly proportional to the square root of time. Diffusion constants were calculated from these data by numerical integration.

Chemical structure of the deep atmosphere of Jupiter

Equilibrium abundances calculated for a system of over 500 compounds of 27 selected elements along a nominal Jupiter adiabat are reported. Several species predicted to be of negligible abundance in the visible upper troposphere if chemical equilibrium is exactly attained are found to be potential tracers of rapid vertical motions. Vertical mixing of certain species, especially CO, PH3, AsH3, GeS, and GeH4, may provide detectable quantities of these species near the visible cloudtops due to quenching and incomplete equilibration of the rapidly rising, rapidly cooling gas. Observational prospects for detecting such tracers of deep circulation are discussed in the light of the spectroscopic detection of CO in the 5-micron window on Jupiter and the confirmation of PH3 on both Jupiter and Saturn.

Tensile and compressive stress-strain behavior of heat treated boron-aluminum

An experimental study was conducted to assess the effects of heat treatment and cyclic mechanical loading on the tensile and compressive stress-strain behavior of six boron-aluminum composites having different laminate orientations and being subjected to different heat treatments. The heat treatments were as-fabricated, T6, and T6N consisting of T6 treatment followed by cryogenic quench in liquid nitrogen prior to testing. All laminates were tested in monotonic and cyclic compression, while the tensile-test data are taken from the literature for comparison purposes. It is shown that the linear elastic range of the T6- and T6N-condition specimens is larger than that of the as-fabricated specimens, and that cyclic loading in tension or compression strain hardens the specimens and extends the linear elastic range. For laminates containing 0-deg plies, the stress-strain behavior upon unloading is found to be nonlinear, whereas the other laminates exhibit a linear behavior upon unloading. Specimens in the T6 and T6N conditions show higher strain hardening than the as-fabricated specimens.

The O I /6300 A/ airglow

The production and destruction of O(D-1) atoms in the thermosphere are studied on the basis of observations conducted by the Atmosphere Explorer-C spacecraft. In particular, measurements of the O I transition at 6300 A provide a means of calculating the strength of the O2(+) dissociative recombination source of O(D-1), which amounts to 1.33. A value of 3 times 10 to the minus 11th power cu cm/sec is established for the quenching rate of O(D-1) by molecular nitrogen, while the photodissociation rate for O2 is set at three millionths per sec. These determinations are in agreement with the conventional theory of the day 6300-A airglow.

Space Shuttle SRM Ignition System

This paper presents the Space Shuttle SRM Ignition System, which consists of a large solid propellant main igniter, a small solid propellant initiating igniter and an electromechanical safety and arming device containing two NASA Standard Initiators and a B-KNO3 pyrotechnic booster charge. In development motors, the igniter also has a valve through which CO2 is injected for post-firing quench of the SRM. The igniter has redundant, testable seals at all pressurized joints and three major reusable components; the case, the adapter, and the S&A device. Two development problem areas are discussed. One problem area was transverse mode combustion instability in the main igniter with maximum amplitude of 340 psi peak-to-peak at a frequency of 1500 Hz, which was reduced by a propellant grain configuration change and a change from a 2% aluminum content propellant to a formulation containing 10% aluminum. The other problem area was an excessively rapid rise of thrust in the SRM, which was reduced by reducing the igniter mass flow rate. This mass flow rate reduction was accomplished by removing portions of the grain starpoints in the head end.
