Review of Canadian experience in precise gravimetry

Results of gravity observations made in Canada from 1974 to 1978 reviewed, in order to estimate the true accuracy of present-day gravimetry and thereby assess the potential capability of the method for detecting crustal movements. The standard error of the mean of ties is 15-20 nm/s squared. Inter-instrument comparisons and other tests show, however, that a more realistic estimate of D meter accuracy is 30-40 nm/s squared. This accuracy can only be maintained over the long term where uncertainties in gravimeter calibration curves are minimized by resetting to the same dial reading on the resurveys. A further deterioration in accuracy to 40-50 nm/s squared occurs where reliance is placed on presently available D meter calibration curves. Despite the present accuracy limitations significant time variations in gravity of 100-150 nm/s squared are seen over spatial scales of 10-100 kilometers in Canada over a period of several months.

Review of coaxial flow gas core nuclear rocket fluid mechanics

Almost all of the fluid mechanics research associated with the coaxial flow gas core reactor ended abruptly with the interruption of NASA's space nuclear program because of policy and budgetary considerations in 1973. An overview of program accomplishments is presented through a review of the experiments conducted and the analyses performed. Areas are indicated where additional research is required for a fuller understanding of cavity flow and of the factors which influence cold and hot flow containment. A bibliography is included with graphic material.

A review of the meteorological parameters which affect aerial application

The ambient wind field and temperature gradient were found to be the most important parameters. Investigation results indicated that the majority of meteorological parameters affecting dispersion were interdependent and the exact mechanism by which these factors influence the particle dispersion was largely unknown. The types and approximately ranges of instrumented capabilities for a systematic study of the significant meteorological parameters influencing aerial applications were defined. Current mathematical dispersion models were also briefly reviewed. Unfortunately, a rigorous dispersion model which could be applied to aerial application was not available.

A review of composite material applications in the automotive industry for the electric and hybrid vehicle

A review is made of the state-of-the-art in regard to the use of composite materials for reducing the structural mass of automobiles. Reduction of mass provides, in addition to other engineering improvements, increased performance/range advantages that are particularly needed in the electric and hybrid vehicle field. Problems encountered include the attainment of mass production techniques and the prevention of environmental hazards.

A review of satellite lightning experiments

Over the past five years a series of satellite optical experiments were conducted to investigate terrestrial lightning. These experiments were designed to gather statistical information about the optical waveform of lightning, measure occurrence rates, demonstrate the feasibility of detecting lightning from space platforms, and study possible applications for satellite lightning sensors. These experiments are reviewed. Some of the results are presented, and some ideas for future satellite systems are discussed.

Measurement techniques for trace metals in coal-plant effluents: A brief review

The strong features and limitations of techniques for determining trace elements in aerosols emitted from coal plants are discussed. Techniques reviewed include atomic absorption spectroscopy, charged particle scattering and activation, instrumental neutron activation analysis, gas/liquid chromatography, gas chromatographic/mass spectrometric methods, X-ray fluorescence, and charged-particle-induced X-ray emission. The latter two methods are emphasized. They provide simultaneous, sensitive multielement analyses and lend themselves readily to depth profiling. It is recommended that whenever feasible, two or more complementary techniques should be used for analyzing environmental samples.

Liquid-cooling technology for gas turbines - Review and status

After a brief review of past efforts involving the forced-convection cooling of gas turbines, the paper surveys the state of the art of the liquid cooling of gas turbines. Emphasis is placed on thermosyphon methods of cooling, including those utilizing closed, open, and closed-loop thermosyphons; other methods, including sweat, spray and stator cooling, are also discussed. The more significant research efforts, design data, correlations, and analytical methods are mentioned and voids in technology are summarized.

Pressure instrumentation for gas turbine engines - A review of measurement technology

Many types and designs of pressure measuring instrumentation are used during the development and testing of gas turbine engines. This paper provides an overview of more commonly available pressure transducers and their characteristics. Probe designs for use in both steady-state and dynamic pressure measurement systems are reviewed. Techniques used to qualify instrument probes and the methods used to calibrate pressure transducers during engine testing are described.

A review of the consequences of fluid and electrolyte shifts in weightlessness

This review describes the renal-endocrine mechanisms related to the early losses of fluid-electrolytes from the body during weightlessness as well as their contribution to longer term adaptation of fluid-electrolyte balance. The hypotheses presented were generated by a systematic analysis of body fluid and renal dynamics observed under conditions of actual and simulated spaceflight. These have increased our understanding of the effects of acute headward fluid shifts on renal excretion, the factors promoting excess sodium excretion and the regulation of extracellular fluid composition.

Flutter suppression and gust alleviation using active controls - Review of developments and applications based on the aerodynamic energy concept

The state of the art of the aerodynamic energy concept, involving the use of active controls for flutter suppression, is reviewed. Applications of the concept include the suppression of external-store flutter of three different configurations of the YF-17 flutter model using a single trailing edge control surface activated by a single fixed-gain control law. Consideration is also given to some initial results concerning the flutter suppression of the 1/20 scale low speed wind-tunnel model of the Boeing 2707-300 supersonic transport using an activated trailing edge control surface.

A review of electrostatic wave measurements on auroral magnetic field lines

The review emphasizes experimental evidence for electrostatic waves on auroral zone magnetic field lines. Data were obtained from radar, balloon, rocket, and satellite observations. The paper is organized around three topics: (1) the turbulent density and velocity fields of the magnetospheric flow, (2) instabilities associated with the convection electric field and its interactions with the neutral atmosphere, and (3) waves and discontinuities in the dynamic region at about one earth radius above the auroral zone. Measurements of both the electric field and density fluctuation component of such waves are included. Although this is not a theoretical study, an attempt is made to organize the measurements about the existing theoretical framework.

Status review of PMR polyimides

In the NASA developed PMR (polymerization of monomer reactants) the reinforcing fibers are impregnated with a solution containing a mixture of monomers dissolved in a low boiling point alkyl alcohol solvent, with the monomers reacting in situ at elevated temperatures to form a thermo-oxidatively stable polyimide matrix. The current status of first and second generation PMR polyimides is reviewed, considering synthesis and properties, processing, and applications. It is concluded that the PMR approach offers various significant advantages, especially superior high temperature properties and processing versatility, to fabricators and users of polyimide/fiber composites.

A review of Curtiss-Wright rotary engine developments with respect to general aviation potential

Aviation related rotary (Wankel-type) engine tests, possible growth directions and relevant developments at Curtiss-Wright have been reviewed. Automotive rotary engines including stratified charge are described and flight test results of rotary aircraft engines are presented. The current 300 HP engine prototype shows basic durability and competitive performance potential. Recent parallel developments have separately confirmed the geometric advantages of the rotary engine for direct injected unthrottled stratified charge. Specific fuel consumption equal to or better than pre- or swirl-chamber diesels, low emission and multi-fuel capability have been shown by rig tests of similar rotary engine.

A review of helicopter control-display requirements for decelarating instrument approach

This paper reviews research and operational test programs that have dealt with control and display requirements for helicopters performing decelerating approaches in the terminal area under instrument flight conditions. A survey of literature concentrating on flight programs resulted in approximately 50 applicable references which were summarized and classified according to the type of stability/control augmentation that was emphasized. On this basis, display information requirements for each control system type were hypothesized consistent with documented results of these programs. Nine control-display combinations that appear to warrant further ground simulation and flight testing are defined and discussed.
