Symbol error rate performance evaluation of the LM37 multimegabit telemetry modulator-demodulator unit

The LM37 multimegabit telemetry modulator-demodulator unit was tested for evaluation of its symbol error rate (SER) performance. Using an automated test setup, the SER tests were carried out at various symbol rates and signal-to-noise ratios (SNR), ranging from +10 to -10 dB. With the aid of a specially designed error detector and a stabilized signal and noise summation unit, measurement of the SER at low SNR was possible. The results of the tests show that at symbol rates below 20 megasymbols per second (MS)s) and input SNR above -6 dB, the SER performance of the modem is within the specified 0.65 to 1.5 dB of the theoretical error curve. At symbol rates above 20 MS/s, the specification is met at SNR's down to -2 dB. The results of the SER tests are presented with the description of the test setup and the measurement procedure.

On the group delay effect of DSN microwave components on multimegabit telemetry

When the gain and phase shift characteristics of the overall system between the modulator and demodulator are given, the group delay effect for the intended data rate can be assessed by examining the equation for the recovered signal for several rectangular pulse inputs with different duty cycles. For example, the group delay loss of 30 Mbit/sec telemetry with only a Block II X-band maser is less than 0.2 dB even with a 10-MHz center frequency offset.

Starprobe - Coronal plasma turbulence effects on tracking and telemetry

The telemetry and tracking problems expected for Starprobe, a solar flyby with a perihelion of 4 solar radii, are discussed. The Starprobe is intended to obtain measurements of the solar quadrupole moment within an accuracy of 1/100,000,000, allowing more accurate modelling of the solar interior. Obstacles are perceived for Doppler velocity measurements due to RF signal amplitude and phase scintillations created by the solar corona. Model calculations are presented for the propagation effects in the maximum disturbance area, and an open loop two-way Doppler system is described. The system comprises X-band and S-band uplinks and downlinks to eliminate the plasma-induced phase scintillations, means of correcting unfolding errors caused by S-band amplitude scintillations, and a new method of estimating the Doppler frequency.

A single-frequency multitransmitter telemetry technique

A telemetry technique for a special data collection system being developed for use on general aviation aircraft involved in aeronautical research programs is described. The system consists of a number of sensor-transmitter units at different locations on the aircraft, with individual signal conditioning and logic, which send sampled data signals to a single receiver in the airplane. The transmitters operate independently on the same frequency and are not synchronized to the receiver. The problem of reception of multiple samples simultaneously is treated by discarding such samples. An overlap detection technique for the frequency shift keyed modulation system is described. The amount of predicted data loss due to overlap is presented and compared with results obtained with a circuit implementation; the effects of discarded data on accuracy is discussed.

A compact presentation of DSN array telemetry performance

The telemetry performance of an arrayed receiver system, including radio losses, is often given by a family of curves giving bit error rate vs bit SNR, with tracking loop SNR at one receiver held constant along each curve. This study shows how to process this information into a more compact, useful format in which the minimal total signal power and optimal carrier suppression, for a given fixed bit error rate, are plotted vs data rate. Examples for baseband-only combining are given. When appropriate dimensionless variables are used for plotting, receiver arrays with different numbers of antennas and different threshold tracking loop bandwidths look much alike, and a universal curve for optimal carrier suppression emerges.

A microprocessor application in the MTV telemetry data processor

An engineering model of the Telemetry Data Processor monitoring and display system used by the Maneuverable Television (MTV) employed in remote inspections of the Space Shuttle has been developed, incorporating the MC 6809 microprocessor. The system acquires analog and digital signals from the MTV flyer and converts them into engineering units, formatting them in several pages according to their function. Upon request, a data page can be superimposed on the video signal from the MTV camera. In addition, the system monitors key parameters for out-of-limit conditions and flashes caution and warning messages on the selected page.

Single-Frequency Multitransmitter Telemetry

Telemetry technique for data collection on general aviation aircraft involved in aeronautical research consists of many sensor/transmitter units at different locations on aircraft. Individual signaling and logic at each sensor/transmitter send signals to single receiver in airplane. Transmitters operate independently on same frequency and are not synchronized to receiver, eliminating erroneous data resulting from two-transmitter overlap.

A proposed technique for the Venus balloon telemetry and Doppler frequency recovery

A technique is proposed to accurately estimate the Doppler frequency and demodulate the digitally encoded telemetry signal that contains the measurements from balloon instruments. Since the data are prerecorded, one can take advantage of noncausal estimators that are both simpler and more computationally efficient than the usual closed-loop or real-time estimators for signal detection and carrier tracking. Algorithms for carrier frequency estimation subcarrier demodulation, bit and frame synchronization are described. A Viterbi decoder algorithm using a branch indexing technique has been devised to decode constraint length 6, rate 1/2 convolutional code that is being used by the balloon transmitter. These algorithms are memory efficient and can be implemented on microcomputer systems.

Command and telemetry in autonomous spacecraft design

Some major steps are summarized in the evolution of autonomous design features for planetary exploration spacecraft. The control and data architectures for the Viking, Voyager, and Galileo spacecraft are considered. Telemetry and command capabilities are fundamental features of spacecraft design that have been successfully used for autonomous control. Also discussed is the Autonomous Redundancy and Maintenance Management Subsystem (ARMMS) concept. The software approach to autonomous control provides for modifications to the control process or the addition of new operating features during flight operations.

Antenna arraying of Voyager telemetry signals by symbol stream combining

Telemetry signals received from the Voyager 2 spacecraft at Deep Space Stations at Parkes and Canberra, Australia, on February 6, 1986, were combined by the method of symbol stream combining. This second demonstration of symbol stream combining followed the International Cometary Explorer (ICE) demonstration at Giacobini-Zinner encounter in September 1985. The Voyager demonstration was at a symbol rate of 43.2 ksymb/s, compared to 2 ksymb/s for ICE. Recording, playback, and combining at this higher rate were demonstrated. The average symbol signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of the combined data was 2.84 dB, or 0.23 dB less than the sum of the SNRs of the two imput symbol streams. This 0.23 loss from ideal combining was due to use of 4-bit quantization of the input symbol stream and imperfect scaling. A practical implementation with 8-bit quantization could achieve combining losses of under 0.05 dB over a wide dynamic range of input signal levels.

Relative performance of 8.5-GHz and 32-GHz telemetry links on the basis of total data return per pass

The performance of X-band (8.5-GHz) and 32-GHz telemetry links is compared on the basis of the total data return per DSN station pass. Differences in spacecraft transmitter efficiency, transmit circuit loss, and transmitting antenna area efficiency and pointing loss are not considered in these calculations. Thus, the performance differentials calculated in this memo are those produced by a DSN 70-m station antenna gain and clear weather receiving system noise temperature and by weather. These calculations show that, assuming mechanical compensation of the DSN 70-m antenna for 32-GHz operation, a performance advantage for 32 GHz over X-band of 8.2 dB can be achieved for at least one DSN station location. Even if only Canberra and Madrid are used, a performance advantage of 7.7 dB can be obtained for at least one DSN station location. A system using a multiple beam feed (electronic compensation) should achieve similar results.

Software development for the VLA-GDSCC telemetry array project

Software for the VLA-GDSCC Telemetry Array (VGTA) Project is being developed in a new manner. Within the Radio Frequency and Microwave Subsystems Section, most microprocessor software has been developed using Intel hardware and software development systems. The VGTA software, however, is being developed using IBM PCs running consumer-oriented software. Utility software and procedures have been generated which allow the software developed on the IBM PCs to be transferred and run on a multibus 8086 computer.

Single frequency multitransmitter telemetry

The invention relates to a single frequency multitransmitter telemetry system that will deliver a substantial amount of data at low cost. The invention consists essentially of a plurality of sensor transmitter units at different locations, with individual signal conditioning and logic, which send sampled data signals to a single receiver. The transmitters operate independently on the same frequency in a frequency shift keying modulation system and are not synchronized to the receiver. The problem of reception of data from more than one transmitter simultaneously is solved by discarding the data - when there is overlap of data from two or more transmitters, the data is discarded and when there is no overlap the data is retained. The invention utilizes a unique overlap detection technique to determine if data should be retained or discarded. When data is received from a transmitter, it goes into a shift register.

Method and apparatus for telemetry adaptive bandwidth compression

Methods and apparatus are provided for automatic and/or manual adaptive bandwidth compression of telemetry. An adaptive sampler samples a video signal from a scanning sensor and generates a sequence of sampled fields. Each field and range rate information from the sensor are hence sequentially transmitted to and stored in a multiple and adaptive field storage means. The field storage means then, in response to an automatic or manual control signal, transfers the stored sampled field signals to a video monitor in a form for sequential or simultaneous display of a desired number of stored signal fields. The sampling ratio of the adaptive sample, the relative proportion of available communication bandwidth allocated respectively to transmitted data and video information, and the number of fields simultaneously displayed are manually or automatically selectively adjustable in functional relationship to each other and detected range rate. In one embodiment, when relatively little or no scene motion is detected, the control signal maximizes sampling ratio and causes simultaneous display of all stored fields, thus maximizing resolution and bandwidth available for data transmission. When increased scene motion is detected, the control signal is adjusted accordingly to cause display of fewer fields. If greater resolution is desired, the control signal is adjusted to increase the sampling ratio.
