Changes in Thermospheric O/N2 Derived from UVI Auroral Images

A rigorous test of our understanding of the coupled ionosphere-thermosphere and its response to geomagnetic storms is the ability to reproduce observed storm effects as seen in the ionosphere and neutral atmosphere. The concept of compositional change is central to studies of thermosphere response to storm conditions. In particular, information about compositional change within the highly dynamic auroral region is limited. The Ultraviolet Imager (UVI) is designed to view the full auroral region using five filters to isolate emissions from atomic oxygen (1304 and 1356) and N2 LBH. This spectral resolution allows auroral energy characteristics to be derived by two separate methods from examining ratios of observed intensities (OI 1356/LBHL or LBHS/LBHL). The LBHS:LBHL ratio is typically used as the mean energy diagnostic since the OI 1356 emission is dependent on changes in the atomic oxygen density, and these changes relative to N2 can be large. However, once the mean energy has been specified by the LBH ratio, this variability in OI 1356 emission can be exploited as a direct diagnostic of total atomic oxygen column density. This opens the potential of using UVI images to monitor the temporal and spatial response of thermospheric O to high latitude forcing within the auroral regions. Initial results of this type of analysis will be presented along with discussion of its limitations and capabilities.

Separation of dilute plutonium(IV) from nitric acid solutions via Reillex HPQ anion exchange resin

Anion exchange is a common method for the separation of plutonium (Pu) in aqueous systems, providing high recovery and decontamination from impurities. Reillex HPQ anion exchange resin has been used around the Department of Energy complex in this application for decades but has typically been used for Pu feed concentrations greater than 1 g/L. It is desirable to recover Pu at more dilute concentrations from a dissolved used fuel or target element, for example. In this work, the performance of Reillex HPQ anion exchange resin was characterized with feed solutions of ca. 0.24 g/L Pu. A significant reduction in the performance of the resin was realized with this dilute concentration relative to a feed solution of 2.35 g/L Pu with similar feed flow rates and the same resin column, likely due to the increased driving force for mass transfer with a higher feed concentration. The maximum capacity of Reillex HPQ resin for Pu can be improved by reducing the flow rate and increasing the feed Pu concentration. Furthermore, the breakthrough point of Pu can be improved in the same manner and by increasing the resin bed height. Diffusion of Pu into the resin was illustrated to be the rate limiting step.

Free zone electrophoresis simulation of static column electrophoresis in microgravity on shuttle flight STS-3

Experiments were designed to replicate, as closely as possible in 1-G, the conditions of the STS-3 red blood cell (RBC) experiments. Free zone electrophoresis was the method of choice, since it minimizes the role of gravity in cell migration. The physical conditions of the STS-3 experiments were used, and human and rabbit RBC's fixed by the same method were the test particles. The effects of cell concentration, electroosmotic mobility, and sample composition were tested in order to seek explanations for the STS-3 results and to provide data on cell concentration effects for future zero-G separation on the continuous-flow zero-G electrophoretics separator.

Nonlinear response of graphite-epoxy wide columns subject to eccentric load

It is shown that including the effects of bend-twist coupling and material nonlinearity on the large displacement flexural response of graphite-epoxy wide columns is necessary to adequately model their response. Results from static tests on 0(30)T and (30/0/-30 sub 5)s laminated specimens under eccentric axial compression are compared to a nonlinear analysis. The analysis is based on a Kantrovich expansion of the displacements in the width coordinate and a finite element representation in the axial coordinate. An incremental, updated Lagrangian formulation and element corotational coordinates are employed. Nonlinear elastic material behavior was measured in a separate set of material characterization tests, and these data are used to compute tangent stillnesses in the updated configuration.

The pre-cataclysmic binary EUVE 2013+400

New optical spectroscopy shows a 0.706 d orbital period for Extreme Ultraviolet Explorer (EUVE) 2013+400 and confirms its membership in a class of close binary systems emerging from common-envelope evolution. This binary, like the prototype Feige 24, consists of an extreme ultraviolet (EUV) emitting hot white dwarf and a late-type dwarf. Bergeron et al.'s (1994) optical spectroscopy and ultraviolet spectrophotometry indicate that the white dwarf is hot (T(sub eff) approximately equals 50 000 K) and therefore very young (t(sub age) less than or equal 5 x 10(exp 6) yr), and extreme ultraviolet photometry places EUVE 2013+400 along a neutral hydrogen column density in the interstellar medium of n(sub H) approximately equal to 10(exp 19)/sq cm. The white dwarf is a DAO type and we obtained two independent estimates of the helium abundance from EUV photometric measurements (log(y) approximately equal to -3.2) and from the He II lambda-4686 line profile (log(y) approximately equal to -2.8). The data possibly indicate a level of heterogeneity expected in the context of on-going chemical separation in the photospheric layers. The Balmer lines show narrow emission that varies with binary phase with the equivalent widths of the emission trailing the radial velocities by 1/4 cycle: this phasing shows that most of the emission arises on the EUV-illuminated face of the red dwarf. A spectrophotometric decomposition shows that the secondary's spectral type is near M3 and that it contributes about 15%-25% of the total light near 6500 A; the resulting H-alpha emission is twice as strong as in Feige 24, with an equivalent width of 37-61 A with respect to the red dwarf continuum. EUVE 2013+400 is an important addition to the class of close binary stars discovered in EUV all-sky surveys.

Free-piston regenerative hot gas hydraulic engine

A displacer piston which is driven pneumatically by a high-pressure or low-pressure gas is included in a free-piston regenerative hydraulic engine. Actuation of the displacer piston circulates the working fluid through a heater, a regenerator and a cooler. The present invention includes an inertial mass such as a piston or a hydraulic fluid column to effectively store and supply energy during portions of the cycle. Power is transmitted from the working fluid to a hydraulic fluid across a diaphragm or lightweight piston to achieve a hydraulic power out-put. The displacer piston of the present invention may be driven pneumatically, hydraulically or electromagnetically. In addition, the displacer piston and the inertial mass of the present invention may be positioned on the same side of the diaphragm member or may be separated by the diaphragm member.

Microwave Imaging on Metal Objects

This final report for the project discusses the attempts to model, using different methods, microwave image reconstruction. Maximum Entropy Method was not successful. Attempts to use Singular Value Decomposition (SVD) got some good results after initial failure. SVD is based upon a theory of linear algebra, to the effect that any M X N Matrix A whose number of rows M is greater than or equal to its number of columns, N can be written as the product of an M X N column-orthogonal matrix U, an N X N diagonal Matrix, W, with m positive or zero elements (the singular values) and the transposition of an N X N orthogonal matrix V. In microwave imaging, the scattered fields can be expressed by the induced current distribution. The SVD method required more contiguous computer memory than was available. Work was also done on the Conjugate Gradient Method (CGM), which didn't work well when tried earlier. It was found that separation of the imaginary part and the real part during calculation may work. This work was considered incomplete as of the end of the grant period.

HarDWR - Water Management Area (WMA) Shapefiles

For a detailed description of the database of which this record is only one part, please see the HarDWR meta-record. Borders of all Water Management Areas (WMAs) across the 11 Western-most states of the continental United States are available filtered through a single source. The legal name for this set of boundaries varies state-by-state. The data is provided as two compressed shapefiles. One, stateWMAs, contains data for all 11 states. For 10 of those states, Arizona being the exception, the polygons represent the legal management boundaries used by those states to manage their surface and groundwater resources respectively. Arizona is unique among this collection of states in that surface and groundwater resources are managed using two separate sets of boundaries. During our followup analysis, due to technical reasons we decided to focus on one set of boundaries, those for surface water. Due to this, the Arizona surface WMAs are included within stateWMAs. The Arizona groundwater WMAs are provided as the second file azGroundWMAs as a companion to the first file for completeness and general reference, although the boundaries were no longer referenced in the analysis (Grogan et al., in review) past a certain point. The columns for both shapefiles are: basinNum: the state provided unique numerical ID basinName: the state provided English name of the area, where applicable state: the state name uniID: a unique identifier we created by concatenating the state name, and underscore, and the state numerical ID

Retrieval and Analysis of Stratospheric NO2 from GOME

In this paper we describe the retrieval of stratospheric NO2 from the GOME (Global Ozone Monitoring Experiment) spectrometer. For this retrieval the Differential Optical Absorption Spectroscopy (DOAS) is used and we describe the influence of the instrument s characteristics on this measurement technique. This analysis led to an improved version of the DOAS algorithm resulting in results with lower systematic errors. Subsequently these results were used to separate the tropospheric and stratospheric fraction of the measured NO;! in the atmosphere. This paper is focusing on the annual variations of the stratospheric distribution of nitrogen oxides. For this examination the satellite data from beginning of 1996 to the end of 2001 was used and has been visualized in a plot zonal means versus time of the year, a visualization which proved to be very useful for Ozone. Additionally the so called "Noxon Cliff", a drop of NO2 column densities Noxon measured in 1975-77 while traveling northwards towards the pole in Canada, is shown. Also its southern equivalent could be discovered in the GOME data.

Hard X-Ray Emission of the Luminous Infrared Galaxy NGC 6240 as Observed by Nustar

We present a broadband (approx.0.3−70 keV) spectral and temporal analysis of NuSTAR observations of the luminous infrared galaxy NGC 6240 combined with archival Chandra, XMM-Newton, and BeppoSAX data. NGC 6240 is a galaxy in a relatively early merger state with two distinct nuclei separated by approx.1.5. Previous Chandra observations resolved the two nuclei and showed that they are both active and obscured by Compton-thick material. Although they cannot be resolved by NuSTAR, we were able to clearly detect, for the first time, both the primary and the reflection continuum components thanks to the unprecedented quality of the NuSTAR data at energies >10 keV. The NuSTAR hard X-ray spectrum is dominated by the primary continuum piercing through an absorbing column density which is mildly optically thick to Compton scattering (tau approx. = 1.2, NH approx. 1.5×10(exp 24)/sq cm. We detect moderately hard X-ray (>10 keV) flux variability up to 20% on short (15−20 ks) timescales. The amplitude of the variability is largest at approx..30 keV and is likely to originate from the primary continuum of the southern nucleus. Nevertheless, the mean hard X-ray flux on longer timescales (years) is relatively constant. Moreover, the two nuclei remain Compton-thick, although we find evidence of variability in the material along the line of sight with column densities NH < or = 2×10(exp 23)/sq cm over long (approx.3−15 yr) timescales. The observed X-ray emission in the NuSTAR energy range is fully consistent with the sum of the best-fit models of the spatially resolved Chandra spectra of the two nuclei.

High-Speed Imaging of the First Kink Mode Instability in a Magnetoplasmadynamic Thruster

One of the biggest challenges to efficient magnetoplasmadynamic thruster (MPDT) operation is the onset of high-frequency voltage oscillations as the discharge current is increased above a threshold value. The onset regime is closely related to magnetohydrodynamic instabilities known as kink modes. This work documents direct observation of the formation and quasi-steady state behavior of an argon discharge plasma in a MPDT operating at discharge currents of 8 to 10 kA for a pulse length of approximately 4 ms. A high-speed camera images the quasi-steady-state operation of the thruster at 26,143 fps with a frame exposure time of 10 micro s. A 0.9 neutral density filter and 488-nm argon line filter with a 10-nm bandwidth are used on separate trials to capture the time evolution of the discharge plasma. Frame-by-frame analysis of the power flux incident on the CCD sensor shows both the initial discharge plasma formation process and the steady-state behavior of the discharge plasma. Light intensity levels on the order of 4-6 W/m2 indicate radial and azimuthal asymmetries in the concentration of argon plasma in the discharge channel. The plasma concentration exhibits characteristics that suggest the presence of a helical plasma column. This helical behavior has been observed in previous experiments that characterize plasma kink mode instabilities indirectly. Therefore, the direct imaging of these plasma kink modes further supports the link between MPDT onset behavior and the excitation of the magnetohydrodynamic instabilities.

High-speed imaging of transition from fluid breakup to phase explosion in electric explosion of tungsten wires in air

High-speed visible imaging of sub-microsecond electric explosion of wires at the low specific energy deposition threshold reveals three distinct modes of wire failure as capacitor charge voltage and energy deposition are increased. For 100 micron diameter gold-plated tungsten wires of 2 cm length, deposited energies of 1.9 eV/atom produces a liquid column that undergoes hydrodynamic breakup into droplets with radii of order of wire diameter on timescales of 200 μs. Instability growth, column breakup, and droplet coalescence follow classic Rayleigh-Plateau predictions for instability of viscous fluid column. Above 3.2 eV/atom of deposited energy, wires are seen to abruptly transition to an expanding mixture of micron scale liquid-droplets and vapor within one frame (less than 3.33 μs), which has been termed ‘phase explosion’ in literature. Between these two limits, at 2.5 eV/atom of deposited energy, wire radius is unchanged for the first 10 μs before the onset of a rapid expansion and disintegration that resembles homogenous nucleation of mechanically unstable bubbles. Here, thermodynamic calculations are presented that separate cases by temperature obtained during heating: below boiling point, near boiling point, and exceeding boiling point.

Optical imaging and high spatial resolution 21 cm H I observations of the peculiar galaxy NGC 2782 (Arp 215)

We have used the Very Large Array (VLA) B and C Arrays to make 21 cm H I observations of the peculiar galaxy NGC 2782 (Arp 215). These observations are complementary to previously published D Array VLA data, which revealed the presence of a long (5 min to 54 kpc) H I plume near the western side of this galaxy. We have also obtained BVRI H alpha images of the main body of this galaxy using the McDonald Observatory 30 inch telescope. The optical images of this galaxy show a strong stellar tail extending to the east, opposite the H I plume. Within the disk of NGC 2782, unsharp masking of the optical images at all 4 broadband wavelengths reveals three bright 'ripples', separated by approximately 15 sec. The light profiles across these ripples are symmetric, without a sharp outer edge. H alpha is strong at the starburst nucleus and along the northern and western sections of the inner ripple. The new higher resolution H I data show that the atomic gas is very clumpy. We have identified ten H I clumps in the long western plume, with H I masses of approximately 10(exp 8) solar mass, similar to those of dwarf galaxies, and column densities of approximately 10(exp 21) cm(exp -2) over surface areas of approximately 10 kpc(exp 2). No CO (1-0) emission has been detected from this plume, suggesting that it is material stripped from the outer edge of a disk galaxy. The H alpha peaks, in contrast, are generally not coincident with H I peaks. No H I is seen at the tip of the eastern extension. The H I distribution near this structure is ring-like rather than tail-like as in the optical data. We have detected redshifted H I absorption toward the central continuum source, indicating gas infall into the nuclear region. Using a restricted 3-body dynamical model, we have successfully reproduced the basic properties of NGC 2782 with an off-center collision between two galaxies, where a lower mass disk companion (M(sub 2)/M(sub 1) approximately 0.25) collides almost head-on with a larger disk galaxy. In this scenario, the companion becomes the eastern extension, and the long western tail is material pulled out from the larger galaxy. The lack of H I at the tip of the eastern tail may be due to stripping during the collision. Alternative formation scenarios include a merger or interaction between two disk galaxies, where the ripples may be due to a disturbed spiral density wave or galactic winds due to the central starburst.

The Relationship between Precipitation and Precipitable Water in CMIP6 Simulations and Implications for Tropical Climatology and Change

It is well documented that over the tropical oceans, column-integrated precipitable water (pw) and precipitation (P) have a nonlinear relationship. In this study moisture budget analysis is used to examine this P–pw relationship in a normalized precipitable water framework. It is shown that the parameters of the nonlinear relationship depend on the vertical structure of moisture convergence. Specifically, the precipitable water values at which precipitation is balanced independently by evaporation versus by moisture convergence define a critical normalized precipitable water, pw nc . This is a measure of convective inhibition that separates tropical precipitation into two regimes: a local evaporation-controlled regime with widespread drizzle and a precipitable water–controlled regime. Most of the 17 CMIP6 historical simulations examined here have higher pw nc compared to ERA5, and more frequently they operate in the drizzle regime. When compared to observations, they overestimate precipitation over the high-evaporation oceanic regions off the equator, thereby producing a ‘‘double ITCZ’’ feature, while underestimating precipitation over the large tropical landmasses and over the climatologically moist oceanic regions near the equator. The responses to warming under the SSP585 scenario are also examined using the normalized precipitable water framework. It is shown that the critical normalized precipitable water value at which evaporation versus moisture convergence balance precipitation decreases as a result of the competing dynamic and thermodynamic responses to warming, resulting in an increase in drizzle and total precipitation. Statistically significant historical trends corresponding to the thermodynamic and dynamic changes are detected in ERA5 and in lowintensity drizzle precipitation in the PERSIANN precipitation dataset.

Hilbert space fragmentation in a 2D quantum spin system with subsystem symmetries

We consider a 2D quantum spin model with ring-exchange interaction that has subsystem symmetries associated to conserved magnetization along rows and columns of a square lattice, which implies the conservation of the global dipole moment. The model is not integrable, but violates the eigenstate thermalization hypothesis through an extensive Hilbert space fragmentation, including an exponential number of inert subsectors with trivial dynamics, arising from kinetic constraints. While subsystem symmetries are quite restrictive for the dynamics, we show that they alone cannot account for such a number of inert states, even with infinite-range interactions. We present a procedure for constructing shielding structures that can separate and disentangle dynamically active regions from each other. Notably, subsystem symmetries allow the thickness of the shields to be dependent only on the interaction range rather than on the size of the active regions, unlike in the case of generic dipole-conserving systems.

A 30kpc Spatially Extended Clumpy and Asymmetric Galactic Outflow atz∼1.7

We image the spatial extent of a cool galactic outflow with fine-structure Fe ii* emission and resonant Mg ii emission in a gravitationally lensed star-forming galaxy at z = 1.70347. The Fe ii* and Mg ii (continuum-subtracted) emissions span out to radial distances of ∼14.33 and 26.5 kpc, respectively, with maximum spatial extents of ∼21 kpc for Fe ii* emission and ∼30 kpc for Mg ii emission. Mg ii emission is patchy and covers a total area of ∼184 kpc2, constraining the minimum area covered by the outflowing gas to be ∼13% of the total area. Mg ii emission is asymmetric and shows ∼21% more extended emission along the decl. direction. We constrain the covering fractions of the Fe ii* and Mg ii emission as a function of radial distance and characterize them with a power-law model. The Mg ii 2803 emission line shows two kinematically distinct emission components and may correspond to two distinct shells of outflowing gas with a velocity separation of Δv ∼ 400 km s−1. By using multiple images with different magnifications of the galaxy in the image plane, we trace the Fe ii* and Mg ii emissions around three individual star-forming regions. In all cases, both the Fe ii* and Mg ii emissions are more spatially extended compared to the star-forming regions traced by the [O ii] emission. These findings provide robust constraints on the spatial extent of the outflowing gas and, combined with outflow velocity and column density measurements, will give stringent constraints on mass-outflow rates of the galaxy.

Pilot Test of a Nanoporous, Super-hydrophobic Membrane Contactor Process for Post-combustion CO 2 Capture

GTI Energy and Air Liquide Advanced Separations (ALaS) have been developing a novel hollow fiber membrane contactor (HFMC) technology for post-combustion CO 2 capture. The process combines advantageous features of both absorption and membrane-based separation processes to separate CO 2 from flue gas cost-effectively. The key component of the HFMC technology is the super-hydrophobic, porous hollow fiber, which is made from polyether ether ketone (PEEK). Compared to conventional absorption/desorption technologies, the critical advantage of the HFMC process is the high contact surface area provided by the hollow fibers enabling an increased volumetric mass-transfer rate. In the PEEK HFMC process, the specific surface area has been increased by an order of magnitude over structurally packed or trayed columns, resulting in compact systems with small footprints.
