Buckling Testing and Analysis of Space Shuttle Solid Rocket Motor Cylinders

A series of full-scale buckling tests were performed on the space shuttle Reusable Solid Rocket Motor (RSRM) cylinders. The tests were performed to determine the buckling capability of the cylinders and to provide data for analytical comparison. A nonlinear ANSYS Finite Element Analysis (FEA) model was used to represent and evaluate the testing. Analytical results demonstrated excellent correlation to test results, predicting the failure load within 5%. The analytical value was on the conservative side, predicting a lower failure load than was applied to the test. The resulting study and analysis indicated the important parameters for FEA to accurately predict buckling failure. The resulting method was subsequently used to establish the pre-launch buckling capability of the space shuttle system.

Pulsed Lidar Performance/Technical Maturity Assessment

This report describes the results of investigations performed by the Georgia Tech Research Institute (GTRI) and the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) under a task entitled 'Pulsed Lidar Performance/Technical Maturity Assessment' funded by the Crew Systems Branch of the Airborne Systems Competency at the NASA Langley Research Center. The investigations included two tasks, 1.1(a) and 1.1(b). The Tasks discussed in this report are in support of the NASA Virtual Airspace Modeling and Simulation (VAMS) program and are designed to evaluate a pulsed lidar that will be required for active wake vortex avoidance solutions. The Coherent Technologies, Inc. (CTI) WindTracer LIDAR is an eye-safe, 2-micron, coherent, pulsed Doppler lidar with wake tracking capability. The actual performance of the WindTracer system was to be quantified. In addition, the sensor performance has been assessed and modeled, and the models have been included in simulation efforts. The WindTracer LIDAR was purchased by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) for use in near-term field data collection efforts as part of a joint NASA/FAA wake vortex research program. In the joint research program, a minimum common wake and weather data collection platform will be defined. NASA Langley will use the field data to support wake model development and operational concept investigation in support of the VAMS project, where the ultimate goal is to improve airport capacity and safety. Task 1.1(a), performed by NCAR in Boulder, Colorado to analyze the lidar system to determine its performance and capabilities based on results from simulated lidar data with analytic wake vortex models provided by NASA, which were then compared to the vendor's claims for the operational specifications of the lidar. Task 1.1(a) is described in Section 3, including the vortex model, lidar parameters and simulations, and results for both detection and tracking of wake vortices generated by Boeing 737s and 747s. Task 1.1(b) was performed by GTRI in Atlanta, Georgia and is described in Section 4. Task 1.1(b) includes a description of the St. Louis Airport (STL) field test being conducted by the Volpe National Transportation Systems Center, and it also addresses the development of a test plan to validate simulation studies conducted as part of Task 1.1(a). Section 4.2 provides a description of the Volpe STL field tests, and Section 4.3 describes 3 possible ways to validate the WindTracer lidar simulations performed in Task 1.1(a).

Proposed Plan for Adopting Updated Range Reference Atmospheres

The Terrestrial and Planetary Environments Team at Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC) proposes to facilitate validation, documentation, and adoption of updated Range Reference Atmospheres (RRAs). This viewgraph presentation describes the plan, focusing on seven tasks: 1) Document data sources; 2) Document analytical models; 3) Document data processing procedures; 4) Compare updates to 1983 versions; 5) Compile written documentation; 6) Obtain approval for final volumes; 7) Publish new RRA datasets/documents.

Shell Buckling Design Criteria Based on Manufacturing Imperfection Signatures

An analysis-based approach .for developing shell-buckling design criteria for laminated-composite cylindrical shells that accurately accounts for the effects of initial geometric imperfections is presented. With this approach, measured initial geometric imperfection data from six graphite-epoxy shells are used to determine a manufacturing-process-specific imperfection signature for these shells. This imperfection signature is then used as input into nonlinear finite-element analyses. The imperfection signature represents a "first-approximation" mean imperfection shape that is suitable for developing preliminary-design data. Comparisons of test data and analytical results obtained by using several different imperfection shapes are presented for selected shells. Overall, the results indicate that the analysis-based approach presented for developing reliable preliminary-design criteria has the potential to provide improved, less conservative buckling-load estimates, and to reduce the weight and cost of developing buckling-resistant shell structures.

Solutions Network Formulation Report. Reducing Light Pollution in U.S. Coastal Regions Using the High Sensitivity Cameras on the SAC-C and Aquarius/SAC-D Satellites

Light pollution has significant adverse biological effects on humans, animals, and plants and has resulted in the loss of our ability to view the stars and planets of the universe. Over half of the U.S. population resides in coastal regions where it is no longer possible to see the stars and planets in the night sky. Forty percent of the entire U.S. population is never exposed to conditions dark enough for their eyes to convert to night vision capabilities. In coastal regions, urban lights shine far out to sea where they are augmented by the output from fishing boat, cruise ship and oil platform floodlights. The proposed candidate solution suggests using HSCs (high sensitivity cameras) onboard the SAC-C and Aquarius/SAC-D satellites to quantitatively evaluate light pollution at high spatial resolution. New products modeled after pre-existing, radiance-calibrated, global nighttime lights products would be integrated into a modified Garstang model where elevation, mountain screening, Rayleigh scattering, Mie scattering by aerosols, and atmospheric extinction along light paths and curvature of the Earth would be taken into account. Because the spatial resolution of the HSCs on SAC-C and the future Aquarius/SAC-D missions is greater than that provided by the DMSP (Defense Meteorological Satellite Program) OLS (Operational Linescan System) or VIIRS (Visible/Infrared Imager/Radiometer Suite), it may be possible to obtain more precise light intensity data for analytical DSSs and the subsequent reduction in coastal light pollution.

Condenser Microphone Protective Grid Correction for High Frequency Measurements

Use of a protective grid on small diameter microphones can prolong the lifetime of the unit, but the high frequency effects can complicate data interpretation. Analytical methods have been developed to correct for the grid effect at high frequencies. Specifically, the analysis pertains to quantifying the microphone protective grid response characteristics in the acoustic near field of a rocket plume noise source. A frequency response function computation using two microphones will be explained. Experimental and instrumentation setup details will be provided. The resulting frequency response function for a B&K 4944 condenser microphone protective grid will be presented, along with associated uncertainties

The Synergistic Engineering Environment

The Synergistic Engineering Environment (SEE) is a system of software dedicated to aiding the understanding of space mission operations. The SEE can integrate disparate sets of data with analytical capabilities, geometric models of spacecraft, and a visualization environment, all contributing to the creation of an interactive simulation of spacecraft. Initially designed to satisfy needs pertaining to the International Space Station, the SEE has been broadened in scope to include spacecraft ranging from those in low orbit around the Earth to those on deep-space missions. The SEE includes analytical capabilities in rigid-body dynamics, kinematics, orbital mechanics, and payload operations. These capabilities enable a user to perform real-time interactive engineering analyses focusing on diverse aspects of operations, including flight attitudes and maneuvers, docking of visiting spacecraft, robotic operations, impingement of spacecraft-engine exhaust plumes, obscuration of instrumentation fields of view, communications, and alternative assembly configurations. .

Large-Scale Weibull Analysis of H-451 Nuclear- Grade Graphite Specimen Rupture Data

A Weibull analysis was performed of the strength distribution and size effects for 2000 specimens of H-451 nuclear-grade graphite. The data, generated elsewhere, measured the tensile and four-point-flexure room-temperature rupture strength of specimens excised from a single extruded graphite log. Strength variation was compared with specimen location, size, and orientation relative to the parent body. In our study, data were progressively and extensively pooled into larger data sets to discriminate overall trends from local variations and to investigate the strength distribution. The CARES/Life and WeibPar codes were used to investigate issues regarding the size effect, Weibull parameter consistency, and nonlinear stress-strain response. Overall, the Weibull distribution described the behavior of the pooled data very well. However, the issue regarding the smaller-than-expected size effect remained. This exercise illustrated that a conservative approach using a two-parameter Weibull distribution is best for designing graphite components with low probability of failure for the in-core structures in the proposed Generation IV (Gen IV) high-temperature gas-cooled nuclear reactors. This exercise also demonstrated the continuing need to better understand the mechanisms driving stochastic strength response. Extensive appendixes are provided with this report to show all aspects of the rupture data and analytical results.

Material Property Characterization of AS4/VRM-34 Textile Laminates

Several material properties (modulus, strengths, and fracture toughness) of a textile composite have been evaluated to provide input data to analytical models of Pultruded Rod Stiffened Efficient Unitized Structure (PRSEUS). The material system is based on warp-knitted preforms of AS4 carbon fibers and VRM-34 epoxy resin, which have been processed via resin infusion and oven curing. Tensile, compressive, shear, and fracture toughness properties have been measured at ambient and elevated temperatures. All specimens were tested in as-fabricated (dry) condition. Specimens were tested with and without through-thickness stitching.

Notched Strength Allowables and Inplane Shear Strength of AS4/VRM-34 Textile Laminates

Notched and unnotched strength allowables were developed for a textile composite to provide input data to analytical structural models based on the Pultruded Rod Stiffened Efficient Unitized Structure (PRSEUS) concept. Filled-hole tensile strength, filled-hole compressive strength, and inplane shear strength along stitch lines have been measured. The material system evaluated in this study is based on warp-knitted preforms of AS4 carbon fibers and VRM-34 epoxy resin, which have been processed via resin infusion and oven curing. All specimens were tested in as-fabricated (dry) condition. Filled-hole strengths were evaluated with and without through-thickness stitching. The effects of scaling on filled-hole tensile strength were evaluated by testing specimens in two widths, but with identical width / hole-diameter ratios. Inplane shear specimens were stitched in two configurations, and two specimen thicknesses were tested for each stitch configuration.

Loftid Aeroshell Engineering Development Unit Structural Testing

NASA’s Hypersonic Inflatable Aerodynamic Decelerator (HIAD) technology was selected for a Technology Demonstration Mission under the Space Technology Mission Directorate in 2017. HIAD is an enabling technology that can facilitate atmospheric entry of heavy payloads to planets such as Earth and Mars using a deployable aeroshell. The deployable nature of the HIAD technology allows it to avoid the size constraints imposed on current rigid aeroshell entry systems. This enables use of larger aeroshells resulting in increased entry system performance (e.g. higher pay-load mass and/or volume, higher landing altitude at Mars). The Low Earth Orbit Flight Test of an Inflatable Decelerator (LOFTID) is currently scheduled for late-2021. LOFTID will be launched out of Vandenberg Air Force Base as a secondary payload on an Atlas V rocket. The flight test features a 6m diameter, 70-deg sphere-cone aeroshell and will provide invaluable high-energy orbital re-entry flight data. This data will be essential in supporting the HIAD team to mature the technology to diameters of 10m and greater. Aeroshells of this scale are applicable to potential near-term commercial applications and future NASA missions. Currently the LOFTID project has completed fabrication of the engineering design unit (EDU) inflatable structure (IS) and the flexible thermal protection system (F-TPS). These two components along with the rigid nose and center body comprise the HIAD aeroshell system. This EDU aeroshell is the precursor to the LOFTID aeroshell that will be used for flight. The EDU was built to verify the design given the subtle differences between the LOFTID aeroshell and past aeroshell designs that have been fabricated under the NASA HIAD project. To characterize the structural performance of the LOFTID aeroshell design, three structural tests will be performed. The first test to be conducted is static load testing, which will induce a uniform load across the forward surface of the aeroshell to simulate the expected pressure forces during atmospheric entry. The IS integrated with the rigid center body will first be tested alone to provide data for analytical model correlation, and then the F-TPS will be integrated for a second series of static load testing of the full aeroshell system. Instrumentation will be employed during the test series to measure component loads during testing, and a laser scanner will be used to generate a 3D map of the aeroshell surface to verify that the shape of the structure is acceptable at the simulated flight loads. After static load testing, pack and deployment testing will be conducted multiple times on the integrated system to demonstrate the aeroshell’s ability to fit within the required packed volume for the LOFTID mission without experiencing significant damage. Finally, the aeroshell will undergo modal testing to characterize its structural response. This presentation will discuss the setup and execution of each of the three tests that the EDU aeroshell will undergo. In addition, initial results of the testing will be presented outlining key findings as LOFTID moves for-ward with fabrication of the flight aeroshell.

Generalized Predictive Control for Active Stability Augmentation and Vibration Reduction on an Aeroelastic Tiltrotor Model

Tiltrotor aircraft are defining the state-of-the-art in vertical lift technology as they have the potential to greatly expand rotary-wing operational boundaries. However, they are often limited in forward flight speed due to complex coupled rotor and wing dynamic instabilities. The U.S. Army and NASA have been developing a new wind tunnel model, the TiltRotor Aeroelastic Stability Testbed(TRAST), to test proprotors in the NASA Langley Research Center Transonic Dynamics Tunnel (TDT) to investigate aeroelastic stability in cruise. The test is intended to provide high-quality research data for analytical tool development and validation. In addition, the TRAST model will support, develop, and mature new technologies for the design of advanced proprotor aircraft. Stability augmentation and vibration reduction during testing is planned with the use of an active control methodology known as Generalized Predictive Control(GPC). GPC is an autoregressive control law that experimentally acquires a system identification to derive the input-output relation of controls and corresponding sensors. This type of control law is especially useful for complex dynamic interactions that are difficult to explicitly model such as proprotor pylon instability, often referred to as whirl flutter. GPC has been successfully employed on other tiltrotor vehicles to suppress whirl flutter instabilities and vibrations. To aid in the characterization of the wind-tunnel model and in tool development, an analytical representation of the wind-tunnel model was developed using the rotorcraft comprehensive analysis system (RCAS) that simulates structural dynamics and aerodynamics. RCAS was used to derive state-space estimates of the physical plant at various flight conditions to test control law effectiveness. This paper will present an overview of the test article development, a description of RCAS, an explanation of the GPC methodology, and results of GPC being applied to state-space plant estimates of the TRAST model. In these simulations, GPC was effective at stabilizing the aircraft beyond the whirl-flutter boundary while simultaneously reducing vibrations across the flight regime. Additionally, a modern advancement to GPC, termed advanced GPC (AGPC), is introduced that enables a self-adapting system identification. Preliminary results show that AGPC is successful at self-correction as the plant changes from what was used for system identification.

What (and How) MERRA-2 Reanalysis Data are Used in Applied Sciences

The Modern Era Retrospective-analysis for Research and Applications, Version 2 (MERRA-2) is the global atmospheric data reanalysis for the satellite era produced by NASA’s Global Modeling and Assimilation Office (GMAO), using the Goddard Earth Observing System Model (GEOS)version 5.12.4. The data are officially distributed by the NASA Goddard Earth Sciences Data and Information Services Center (GES DISC). MERRA-2 data have been widely used by the Earth sciences and application community. Since MERRA-2 data were released in early 2016, the number of registered data users has grown steadily from 1,252 in 2016 to 6477 in 2020. By the end of October 2021, ~16 petabytes (over 360 million files) of data have been distributed to more than 18,900 users. Searching in Google Scholar (https://scholar.google.com/), we have found over 7,000 articles, published between January 2017 and May 2021, involving the use ofMERRA-2 data. The figure shows the numbers for various application areas in which theMERRA-2 data have been used, covering almost all of the application areas defined in NASA Applied Sciences (http://appliedsciences.nasa.gov). The largest number of articles are found in disaster research, with the subcategories ordered in flood, wildfires, hurricanes and cyclones, and other forms of severe weather. In this presentation, we will discuss the preliminary findings from a review of the selected literature that uses MERRA-2 data in applied sciences. The current analytic and interoperable data services at GES DISC are listed, such as the on-the-fly subset and analysis service, NASA Giovanni; THREDDS Data Server(TDS); and Python Jupyter notebooks. In addition, we will introduce two new services for supporting the open sciences: My Dashboard and Related Publications.

Strategy for Developing Technologies for Megawatt-class Nuclear Electric Propulsion Systems

A strategy for maturing the technologies required for a megawatt-class nuclear electric propulsion (NEP) system is presented. The effort is responsive to recent non-advocate reviews stating high-power NEP technologies were relatively immature and significant maturation was required before contemplating the use of NEP on a flight mission. The maturation strategy presented accomplishes this through hardware test and evaluation at the sizes, scales, and conditions expected during high-power NEP missions. The development effort is accompanied by modeling of such a system to demonstrate thorough understanding and verification of the performance, lifetime, and failure modes. The proposed effort uses a building-block approach, maturing technologies for a 1 MWe block under the assumption that a future high-power NEP mission will have requirements that can be met either through straightforward scaling of this building block to the levels required or through the use of multiple blocks to meet the overall power needs. The plan is outlined for maturation to technology readiness level 5, characterized by test and evaluation using brassboard-fidelity hardware in a relevant environment and by demonstration of agreement between test data and analytical predictions.

Full Lunar Surface Visualization and Simulation Platform

This project created a visualization and simulation software platform for the entire lunar surface. Given the polar Artemis landing targets, the challenging terrain, lighting, and associated integrated crew / vehicle risk assessment, a more integrated approach to mission safety certification, potentially impacting equipment design and crew activity is required. This integrated capability will enable Safety and Mission Assurance (SMA), Flight Operations (FOD), and EVA to effectively collaborate to reduce human lunar exploration operational risk utilizing the identical tools to perform mission planning, rehearsal simulations, and providing the Safety Review Panel with integrated risk analysis capability.

Composites From in-Situ Consolidation Automated Fiber Placement of Thermoplastics for High-Rate Aircraft Manufacturing

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) project Hi-Rate Composites Aircraft Manufacturing (HiCAM) aims to significantly increase commercial aircraft composite structures manufacturing rate. Thermoplastic composites offer attractive solutions to rapid manufacturing due to their ability to be formed and consolidated quickly. NASA has a particular interest in assessing composite structure manufacturing utilizing an in-situ consolidation automated fiber placement (AFP) of thermoplastics (ICAT) process employing current state-of-the-art laser heating systems. Three semi-crystalline polyaryletherketone (PAEK) thermoplastic tape materials were characterized to ascertain the ICAT process parameters. The required laser power settings were determined at Electroimpact, Inc., measuring material temperatures utilizing a forward looking infrared (FLIR) thermal imaging camera and thermocouples. The material temperature, tool temperature, and placement speed were varied for resulting consolidation quality assessment. The resulting temperature data were also utilized to calibrate thermal analysis models under development at NASA. The experimental temperature data confirmed analytical results. The quality of the resulting test panels was evaluated by both non-destructive evaluation as well as destructively by photo-microscopy. The effect on interlaminar strength was determined by short beam strength testing. Test results of carbon fiber laminates fabricated by ICAT using polyetheretherketone (PEEK), polyetherketoneketone (PEKK), and low-melt polyaryletherketone (LM-PAEK) at various placement temperatures and placement speeds are presented.
