Enhancement of harmonic generation by an intense driving laser with high-order waveguide modes in a high-pressure gas-filled hollow waveguide

High-order harmonics have been widely used as reliable tabletop coherent radiation sources recently, but their applications have often been limited by the available pulse energy. Here, we report that by using an overdriven intense laser in a long waveguide with high-pressure gas, phase matching can be achieved in three distinct “regimes”. In the third regime, favorable phase matching is achieved at near-axis positions to enhance harmonic yields. Our results are supported by a full theoretical analysis, and we demonstrate that coupling of the driving laser with the high-order waveguide modes (instead of the fundamental mode used in most prior experiments) is responsible for achieving phase matching. Furthermore, we establish that this phase matching (and harmonic enhancement) is robust, and a scaling relation is derived for the necessary waveguide and gas parameters, allowing our predictions to be tested immediately in any laboratory today.

Comparative study of spectral broadening and few-cycle compression of Yb:KGW laser pulses in gas-filled hollow-core fibers

While industrial-grade Yb-based amplifiers have become very prevalent, their limited gain bandwidth has created a large demand for robust spectral broadening techniques that allow for few-cycle pulse compression. In this work, we perform a comparative study between several atomic and molecular gases as media for spectral broadening in a hollow-core fiber geometry. Exploiting nonlinearities such as self-phase modulation, self-steepening, and stimulated Raman scattering, we explore the extent of spectral broadening and its dependence on gas pressure, the critical power for self-focusing, and the optimal regime for few-cycle pulse compression. Using a 3-mJ, 200-fs input laser pulses, we achieve 17 fs, few-cycle pulses with 80% fiber energy transmission efficiency. The optimal parameters can be scaled for higher or lower input pulse energies with appropriate gas parameters and fiber geometry.

Filling gaps in bacterial catabolic pathways with computation and high-throughput genetics

To discover novel catabolic enzymes and transporters, we combined high-throughput genetic data from 29 bacteria with an automated tool to find gaps in their catabolic pathways. GapMind for carbon sources automatically annotates the uptake and catabolism of 62 compounds in bacterial and archaeal genomes. For the compounds that are utilized by the 29 bacteria, we systematically examined the gaps in GapMind’s predicted pathways, and we used the mutant fitness data to find additional genes that were involved in their utilization. We identified novel pathways or enzymes for the utilization of glucosamine, citrulline, myo-inositol, lactose, and phenylacetate, and we annotated 299 diverged enzymes and transporters. We also curated 125 proteins from published reports. For the 29 bacteria with genetic data, GapMind finds high-confidence paths for 85% of utilized carbon sources. In diverse bacteria and archaea, 38% of utilized carbon sources have high-confidence paths, which was improved from 27% by incorporating the fitness-based annotations and our curation. GapMind for carbon sources is available as a web server ( http://papers.genomics.lbl.gov/carbon ) and takes just 30 seconds for the typical genome.

Development of Long Fiber Filled Materials for Fused Filament Fabrication (FFF) (Phase 2)

ORNL worked with 3D Platform to develop new hardware and systems for their largest product, a medium format pellet system known as the WorkCenter 500. 3D Platform provided an Alpha version of the system for ORNL to begin development and systems integration. ORNL focused efforts on integrating a new dryer, safety enclosure, extruder, and build table for improved operation of the system.
