Pyridine Complexes of Iodobismuthate(III) Anions

We report a rare family of pyridine-coordinated iodobismuthate(III) salts supported by alkyltriphenylphosphonium and tetraphenylphosphonium cations. Reactions of BiI 3 with Ph 3 PR + I − (R = Me, Et, n Pr, n Bu, Ph) in neat pyridine, followed by crystallization, yield structurally tunable bismuth-halide-pyridine anions dictated by reagent stoichiometry. Combination of BiI 3 and Ph 3 PR + I − in 2:1 ratio produced [Ph 3 PR] 2 [BiI 5 Py], 1 (R = Me, Et, n Pr, Ph), while combination in 1:1 ratio resulted in three compounds: [Ph 3 PR][cis-BiI 4 Py 2 ], 2 (R = n Pr, Ph), [Ph 3 PR][trans-BiI 4 Py 2 ], 3 (R = Me, Et, Ph), and [Ph 3 PR] 2 [transoid-Bi 2 I 8 Py 2 ], 4 (R = Me, Et, n Pr, n Bu, Ph). In many cases, the compounds were isolated as Py or Et 2 O solvates, and in some cases, multiple degrees of solvation or polymorphism were encountered. Hirshfeld analysis of 1–4 showed the major anion–cation/anion/solvent interactions to be H⋯I, H⋯H, and C⋯H. Diffuse reflectance measurements of representative compounds, all of which were yellow-orange to red-orange, revealed bandgaps in the range of 1.9–2.2 eV, where density-of-states KS-DFT calculations attribute the absorption to metal-centered charge transfer within the anionic unit. NLMO and QTAIM analyses further indicate predominantly ionic Bi(III)–I/pyridine bonding with robust inner-sphere coordination that is insensitive to anion speciation.

Thermal analysis of M552 experiment for materials processing in space

Analytical and experimental studies made of heat flow in the exothermic brazing unit in the M552 experiment are described. The emphasis of the studies was placed on heat flow in the tube and the sleeve during a period from ignition to the time when the brazing alloy solidifies. Experiments were made of three specimens tested in a ground-based laboratory. Heat flow was determined by thermocouples. The analytical study covered two phases: (1) the effect of reduced gravity on heat flow in the exothermic brazing unit; and (2) the development of analytical models. The major mode of heat transfer was conduction and the effect of gravity was minimal. Good agreements were obtained between experimental and analytical results indicating the soundness of the analytical models.

Techniques for using diazo materials in remote sensor data analysis

The use of data derived from LANDSAT is facilitated when special products or computer enhanced images can be analyzed. However, the facilities required to produce and analyze such products prevent many users from taking full advantages of the LANDSAT data. A simple, low-cost method is presented by which users can make their own specially enhanced composite images from the four band black and white LANDSAT images by using the diazo process. The diazo process is described and a detailed procedure for making various color composites, such as color infrared, false natural color, and false color, is provided. The advantages and limitations of the diazo process are discussed. A brief discussion interpretation of diazo composites for land use mapping with some typical examples is included.

Analysis and assessment of film materials and associated manufacturing processes for a solar sail

Candidate resin manufacturers and film producers were surveyed to determine the availability of key materials and to establish the capabilities of fabricators to prepare ultrathin films of these materials within the capacity/cost/time constraints of the Halley program. Infrared spectra of three candidate samples were obtained by pressing each sample against an internal reflection crystal with the polymer sandwiched between the crystal and the metal backing. The sample size was such that less than one-fourth of the surface of the crystal was covered with the sample. This resulted in weak spectra requiring a six-fold expansion. Internal reflection spectra of the three samples were obtained using both a KRS-5 and a Ge internal reflection crystal. Subtracted infrared spectra of the three samples are presented.

Deployable antenna technology development for the Large Space Systems Technology program

The critical technologies associated with the development of deployable reflector antenna technology for the LSST program will be derived from NASA mission models and the subsequent requirements will be related to the classes of missions involved. The approach formulated for the development of reflector technology is based on the development of specific reflector concepts that have been identified as leading candidates for future applications. The development approach will be augmented by supporting technology disciplines such as controls, materials, electromagnetic analysis, as well as the capability of analytically predicting the overall performance of the large space system.

A method of predicting the performance deterioration of a compressor cascade due to sand erosion

Performance deterioration due to sand erosion is a well known phenomena for aircraft engines operating in particulate flow environments. A method for predicting this performance deterioration is developed and applied to a two dimensional compressor cascade. The locations of the particles impacts are computed by analyzing the trajectories of the individual particles. From this analysis, the material removed, the changes in the airfoil shape, and the roughness development over the surface are estimated as a function of time. The resulting airfoil profiles are analyzed for predicting performance by using an inviscid-viscous interaction technique. The analytical solution is compared with experimental results.

Sublimation measurements and analysis of high temperature thermoelectric materials and devices

High temperature thermoelectric device sublimation effects are compared for rare earth sulfides, selenides, and state-of-the-art Si-Ge alloys. Although rare earth calcogenides can potentially exhibit superior sublimation characteristics, the state-of-the-art Si-Ge alloy with silicon nitride sublimation-inhibitive coating has been tested to 1000 C. Attention is given to the ceramic electrolyte cells, forming within electrical and thermal insulation, which affect leakage conductance measurements in Si-Ge thermoelectric generators.
