The open porosity of wear-resistant modified coatings is investigated, and their macrostructure is analyzed. A statistical method is proposed for describing the formation of porosity in the laminar structure of a powder coating. The matrix of transition probabilities is determined for a uniform Markov chain. The porosity of a coating on a smooth substrate is calculated.

In one embodiment, a product includes a plurality of carbon nanotubes and a fill material in interstitial spaces between the carbon nanotubes for limiting or preventing fluidic transfer between opposite sides of the product except through interiors of the carbon nanotubes. Moreover, the longitudinal axes of the carbon nanotubes are substantially parallel, where an average inner diameter of the carbon nanotubes is about 20 nanometers or less. In addition, the ends of the carbon nanotubes are open and the fill material is impermeable or having an average porosity that is less than the average inner diameter of the carbon nanotubes.
The present invention relates to a construct including a porous core, a cargo, and a spacer disposed between the core and the cargo. In some examples, the construct further includes an outer layer composed of a lipid, a polymer, or a combination thereof. Methods of making and employing such constructs are also described herein.
According to one embodiment, a composition of matter includes: a first system of continuous voids arranged in a three-dimensional matrix; a second system of continuous voids arranged in the three-dimensional matrix; and a nanoporous barrier separating the first system of continuous voids and the second system of continuous voids. The first system of continuous voids and the second system of continuous voids are interwoven but independent so as to form a plurality of channels through the three-dimensional matrix. Corresponding methods for forming the composition of matter are also disclosed.
Numerical simulations of multiphase transport in porous media using a geometric domain from computed tomography scanning.
In one embodiment, a method includes acquiring a three-dimensional printed template created using an additive manufacturing technique, infilling the template with an aerogel precursor solution, allowing formation of a sol-gel, and converting the sol-gel to an aerogel. In another embodiment, a product includes an aerogel having inner channels corresponding to outer walls of a three-dimensional printed template around which the aerogel was formed.
