Onboard/Origin-Destination Survey - Phoenix - 2007

In 2007, the Valley Metro Regional Public Transportation Authority, with consultant support, conducted an origin and destination survey of Valley Metro riders. The self-administered surveys were conducted among riders of fixed-route bus service: Local, Circulator, Limited, Rural, Express, and RAPID bus. Data collection was performed from October 8 through December 18, 2007. The objectives of the survey were to examine the demographics and travel behavior characteristics of Valley Metro riders. The survey data used for this analysis were appropriately weighted and expanded to represent the unlinked trips made by Valley Metro riders.

2017 National Household Travel Survey - Arizona Add-On

# 2017 National Household Travel Survey – Arizona Add-On The Arizona add-on survey supplements the 2017 National Household Travel Survey (NHTS) with additional household samples and detailed travel behavior for an assigned travel day. ## Data Collection Agency The Federal Highway Administration conducted the NHTS and corresponding add-on surveys. ## Methodology This survey documents the demographic, attitudinal, and travel behavior for all members of 2,987 households, as collected from April 2016 to April 2017. Daily travel details provide insight into work and school commutes, non-emergency medical trips, shopping trips, and even how travel differs in the summer and on weekends as compared to a typical weekday when school is in session. When statistically weighted to adjust for survey biases, the data demographically represents all Americans and is appropriate for analysis at the national and census region levels. ## Survey Records Survey records include a total of 6,081 participants. ## Transportation Data The NHTS Arizona add-on data package contains a demographic and socioeconomic composition of 6,081 people from 2,987 households in Arizona, as well as detailed information on the travel behavior of each household for a designated 24-hour period. The survey logged more than 258,000 vehicle miles of travel by participants during 19,779 trips. Design Assessment of Brayton Cycles for Combined Heat and Power from Nuclear Power Plants

Brayton cycles (BCs) are gaining renewed interest for use in high-temperature nuclear reactors for power production. This study explores the potential of nuclear Brayton systems in industrial combined heat and power (CHP) production. After a review of the historical deployment and technical development of BC systems for nuclear and cogeneration applications several BCs in CHP configurations are assessed when applied to representative high-temperature reactor types. The analysis emphasizes process heat delivery options, electrical efficiency, and component performance for the case of a direct cycle—Helium BC in a high temperature gas reactor, and an open-air Brayton cycle with a high temperature gas reactor. The results highlight thermodynamic trade-offs in cogeneration operation, particularly in recuperated configurations, and compare BC-based CHP with conventional Rankine cycle (RC) performance. Key findings suggest Helium BCs offer viable CHP performance primarily at lower process heat temperatures, with open air cycles being less efficient. The work also demonstrates trade-off between CHP performance and power production performance with a detailed comparison to where steam RC has better performance. The work is designed to be used as a reference work when cogeneration is proposed from high temperature reactors alongside the use of BCs.

"Soiling, Cleaning, and Abrasion: The Results of the Five-Year Photovoltaic Glass Coating Field Study" [Slides]

External contamination ("soiling") of the incident surface is a major limiting factor for solar technologies. A 5-year field glass coupon study was conducted to better understand external contamination and its effects; compare cleaning methods and the use of preventative coatings; and explore the abrasion resulting from cleaning to advise on accelerated abrasion testing. Test sites included the cities of Dubai (UAE), Kuwait City (Kuwait), Mesa (AZ), Mumbai (India), and Sacramento (CA). Through the 5-year cumulative study, dry brush, water spray, and wet sponge and squeegee cleaning methods were compared to no cleaning. Optical microscopy was used to obtain images, including representative color images, grayscale images for object analysis, and oblique images for coating integrity assessment. A thresholding protocol was developed to analyze and distinguish specimens using the ImageJ software. Optical performance was quantified using a spectrophotometer, including comprehensive optical characterization (transmittance, reflectance, and absorptance in addition to forward- and back-scattering). Atomic force microscopy was used to verify the abrasion damage morphology, including the width and depth of surface scratches. Analysis of the results included correlation of optical performance and particle area coverage, rank order (by coating or location), and the acceleration factor for abrasion damage. The efficacy of external cleaning was more readily distinguished from the effectiveness of antisoiling coatings. The acceleration factor for dry brush cleaning of a porous silica coating was found to be on the order of unity.

Cost of Wind Energy Review: 2024 Edition [Slides]

The primary elements of this analysis include: Estimated LCOE for (1) a representative land-based wind energy project installed in a moderate wind resource in the United States, (2) a representative fixed-bottom offshore wind energy project installed in the U.S. North Atlantic, and (3) a representative floating offshore wind energy project installed off the U.S. Pacific Coast. It also updates the LCOE estimates for representative residential-, commercial-, and large-scale distributed wind projects installed in a moderate wind resource in the United States. A sensitivity analyses is included that shows the range of effects that basic LCOE variables could have on the cost of wind energy for land-based and offshore wind projects and provides updated Fiscal Year 2024 values for land-based and offshore wind energy used for Government Performance and Results Act (GPRA) reporting and illustrated progress toward established GPRA targets.

Basic parameters for low thrust mission and system analysis.

Development of a basic set of normalized parameters to represent low-thrust system characteristics. The conditions which must be met to obtain trajectory and performance data which are invariant with the launch vehicle characteristics, the selected power, the specific mass of the low-thrust vehicle, and the efficiency of the ion propulsion system are derived. This normalized representation of mission characteristics frees the analyst from having to rerun the trajectories if any of the aforementioned parameters are varied. Examples pertaining to a low-thrust Jupiter flyby and comet Encke rendezvous are given to demonstrate the utility of the method of presentation.

Tracking system analytic calibration activities for the Mariner Mars 1971 mission

This report describes the functions of the Tracking System Analytic Calibration activity for Mariner Mars 1971 (MM'71), its objectives for this and future missions, and the support provided to the MM'71 Navigation Team during operations. The support functions encompass calibration of tracking data by estimating physical parameters whose uncertainties represent limitations to navigational accuracy, and detailed analysis of the tracking data to uncover and resolve any anomalies. Separate articles treat the activities and results of producing calibrations for the various error sources: Deep Space Station Locations, timing and polar motion, charged particles, and the troposphere. Two other articles are also included dis- - cussing the effects of the media error sources on orbit determination and the merits of the smoothing technique used for DRIVID.
