Cerium hydride has a variety of interesting properties, including a known lattice contraction and densification with increasing hydrogen content. However, precise stoichiometric control is not experimentally straightforward and ab initio approaches are not computationally feasible for many properties such as melting and low temperature diffusion. Therefore, we develop a machine-learned interatomic potential for cerium hydride that is valid for H to Ce ratios from 2.0 to 3.0. A query-by-committee active learning approach is used to develop the training set. Leveraging classical molecular dynamics simulations, we assess a range of properties and provide fundamental mechanisms for the trends with stoichiometry. Finally, a majority of the properties follow the trend of lattice contraction, being governed by the stronger lattice binding induced by adding octahedral atoms.
Ligand-passivated ErOCl nanocrystals have been synthesized using a non-hydrolytic sol–gel method. Anisotropic sintering of ErOCl nanocrystals enhances 2D chloride-ion diffusion along theabplane, yielding a promising candidate for halide batteries.
Firestone Walker Brewing Company (FWBC), Paso Robles, California, owns a 1-million-barrel (BBL) brewery that requires up to 5 MW of process heat in form of saturated steam. Firestone Walker Brewery has set a goal of reducing carbon emissions by 50% for our 1 million BBL brewery.

Spin-orbit coupling (SOC) governs many physical phenomena. Through ab initio molecular dynamics simulations, Lu and Sun demonstrated that structural disorder at elevated temperatures substantially reduces the effective SOC contribution that stabilizes band inversion, driving a topological-to-normal-insulator transition in Bi2Se3. Their work identifies temperature as a meaningful control parameter for SOC-mediated topology and other properties.
Here, we develop a quantitative theory of phonon magnetic moment in doped Dirac semimetals. Our theory is based on an emergent gauge field approach to the electron-phonon coupling, applicable to gapless systems. We find that the magnetic moment is directly proportional to the electrical Hall conductivity through the phonon Hall viscosity. Our theory is combined with the first-principles calculations, allowing us to quantitatively implement it to realistic materials. Magnetic moments are found to be of the order of a Bohr magneton for Raman-active phonon modes in graphene and Cd 3 As 2 . Our results provide practical guidance for the dynamical generation of large magnetization in quantum materials.
