Satellite altimeters after Skylab and GEOS-C - should they utilize a single transmitter or an array of pulsed amplifiers?

An attempt was made to determine if future satellite altimeters, operating at K-band, should use a single transmitter or an array of pulsed amplifiers. The two systems were compared as a function of reliability, power, service life, system requirements, and weight. Preliminary results indicate the modular system to be superior in service life and reliability although it requires more power and is substantially heavier than the single system. No concrete conclusions were reached as to which system should be used.

Radiation and particle detector and amplifier

A radiation or charged particle detector is described which incorporates a channel multiplier structure to amplify the detected rays or particles. The channel multiplier structure has a support multiplying element with a longitudinal slot along one side. The element supports a pair of plates positioned contiguous with the slot. The plates funnel the particles or rays to be detected into the slotted aperture and the element, thus creating an effectively wide aperture detector of the windowless type.

Broadband power amplifier tube: Klystron tube 5K70SK-WBT and step tuner VA-1470S

The design concept, the fabrication, and the acceptance testing of a wide band Klystron tube and remotely controlled step tuner for channel selection are discussed. The equipment was developed for the modification of an existing 20 KW Power Amplifier System which was provided to the contractor as GFE. The replacement Klystron covers a total frequency range of 2025 to 2120 MHz and is tuneable to six (6) each channel with a band width of 22 MHz or greater per channel. A 5 MHz overlap is provided between channels. Channels are selected at the control panel located in the front of the Klystron magnet or from one of three remote control stations connected in parallel with the step tuner. Included in this final report are the results of acceptance tests conducted at the vendor's plant and of the integrated system tests.

Design, construction and evaluation of a 12.2 GHz, 4.0 kW-CW high efficiency klystron amplifier

An analytical and experimental program is described, for studying design techniques for optimizing the conversion efficiency of klystron amplifiers, and to utilize these techniques in the development and fabrication of an X-band 4 kW cw klystron, for use in satellite-borne television broadcast transmitters. The design is based on a technique for increasing the RF beam current by using the second harmonic space charge forces in the bunched beam. Experimental analysis was also made of a method to enhance circuit efficiency in the klystron cavities. The design incorporates a collector which is demountable from the tube to facilitate multistage depressed collector experiments employing an axisymmetric, electrostatic collector for linear beam microwave tubes.

Three-dimensional evaluation of energy extraction in output cavities of klystron amplifiers

Description of an accurate three-dimensional mathematical model and computer program for calculating electronic interaction, electron trajectories, beam interception, and efficiency in the output cavity of a klystron amplifier. The highest computed efficiency for an optimally bunched beam was 80.3% with 6% ideal interception. Efficiency is shown to increase initially with interception.

Research on fluidics, valves, and proportional amplifiers

Research and development being conducted at the Systems and Controls Laboratory is reviewed. Static characteristics (supply, input, transfer, output, and noise characteristics) of laminar proportional amplifiers were investigated. Other topics discussed include velocity profiles for laminar fluidic jets, speed control systems employing a jet pipe valve, and power amplification with a vortex valve.

Charge-sensitive amplifier with notched frequency response

Charge sensitive amplifier outputs bipolar pulse with maximum peak of 5 volts. This is applied to negative inputs of two high-speed comparators. These change output states only if pulse applied to negative inputs exceeds dc bias on their positive inputs. Output is transferred to digital event counter.

The practical operational-amplifier gyrator circuit for inductorless filter synthesis

A literature is reported for gyrator circuits utilizing operational amplifiers as the active device. A gyrator is a two port nonreciprocal device with the property that the input impedance is proportional to the reciprocal of the load impedance. Following an experimental study, the gyrator circuit with optimum properties was selected for additional testing. A theoretical analysis was performed and compared to the experimental results for excellent agreement.

The use of TWT amplifiers in M-ary amplitude and phase shift keying systems

A great deal of research is presently being conducted to study modulation schemes in order to reduce the bandwidth of digital communications. These M-ary amplitude and phase shift keying (MAPSK) modulation systems place new requirements on TWT amplifiers in space applications in that the various signal sets usually include two or more discrete output power levels as well as discrete phases at each power level. This paper presents a variety of predistortion schemes to circumvent the TWT problems of AM distortion and AM-to-PM conversion in order to produce MAPSK signal sets. A feedback scheme is presented to correct for long-term phase and amplitude drifts in the transmitter. A complete transmitter is proposed using predistortion to produce the desired MAPSK signal set at very high data rates including the possible use of a feedback stabilization scheme.

A frequency doubled pressure-tunable oscillator-amplifier dye laser system

A tunable high-repetition-rate oscillator-amplifier dye-laser system is reported. The dye laser described was longitudinally pumped with the second harmonic of a Nd-YAG laser operating at 10 Hz. Using three Faraday-Perot etalons and pressure tuning, a maximum fundamental output power of the order of 6 MW with a corresponding spectral width of less than 0.003 nm at 564 nm was obtained. The fundamental at 564 nm was frequency doubled to give a maximum power level of 0.6 MW of second-harmonic output power with a spectral width less than 0.0015 nm at 282 nm. Frequency stability could be maintained to within approximately 15% of the line-width.

An interpretation of Jupiter's decametric radiation and the terrestrial kilometric radiation as direct amplified gyroemission

Direct amplified gyroemission due to an anisotropic distribution of suprathermal electrons is proposed as the most plausible emission mechanism for Jupiter's decametric radiation (DAM) and the terrestrial auroral kilometric radiation (AKR). It is suggested that the required electron distribution could be produced by electrons, initially with small pitch angles, precipitating from the magnetosphere. A quasi-linear treatment of the proposed mechanism is outlined, including satisfaction of the Doppler condition, calculation of the growth rate, conditions for quasi-linear relaxation, and generation of the anisotropy. The mechanism is applied to the Jovian DAM, emphasizing the growth rate, the power radiated, and the elliptical polarization of the radiation. It is found that the theory can account for the gross features of the DAM, provided the number density in the precipitating electron streams exceeds 20 per cu cm. Application of the theory to the AKR shows that the requirements concerning the properties of the precipitating electrons appear to be satisfied by the observed properties of those inverted V events which correlate with the emission of AKR.
