The present disclosure relates to a composition that includes a first repeat unit that includes where x is between 1 and 1,000, inclusively, and R1 includes at least one of a first hydrocarbon chain and/or a first hydrocarbon ring. In some embodiments of the present disclosure, R1 may further include at least one of an oxygen atom, a nitrogen atom, a sulfur atom, and/or a phosphorus atom.
The disclosure provides products and methods of treating diseases and disorders involving microbial pathogens, such as intestinal microbial pathogens, e.g., Pseudomonas aeruginosa, by administering an effective amount of a phosphorylated polyethylene glycol compound of defined structural organization. Those diseases and disorders characterized by an epithelium attacked by a microbial pathogen are contemplated, including gastrointestinal infections and inflammation, e.g., treatment of intestinal or esophageal anastomosis or treatment or suppression of anastomotic leakage.
Cationic polymers are provided that comprise monomeric units of Formula (V). (V) Each asterisk (*) indicates an attachment position to another monomeric unit; R is hydrogen or methyl; each R 2 is each independently an alkyl, aryl, or a combination thereof; L is a linking group comprising an alkylene group; and +R 3</sup? is a cationic nitrogen-containing group free of any N—H bonds. Membranes formed from said cationic polymers, devices including such membranes, and methods of making such cationic polymers are also provided.
A self-healing polymer material that includes a multiphase copolymer, and a method of making the copolymer, are provided. The multiphase copolymer includes one or more hydrogen bond-forming copolymer segments, each segment including a polymerized acrylamide monomer and a polymerized acrylic monomer. The polymerized acrylamide monomer includes functional groups that form hydrogen bonds in the multiphase copolymer, and is present in the one or more copolymer segments in an amount sufficient for self-healing of the multiphase copolymer.
The blending of glassy copolymer-brush modified colloids with a viscoelastic linear copolymer featuring intrinsic self-healing enabled disordered hyperuniform hybrid materials that combined mechanical robustness with structural color, processability, environmental stability, and the ability to recover structure and properties after incurring physical damage via ‘integrated self-healing’. Symmetric linear n-butyl acrylate/methyl methacrylate (BA/MMA) were co-assembled with asymmetric glassy BA/MMA statistical copolymer brush (silica) particles. ‘Confinement-driven segregation’ resulted in a microphase-separated morphology in which the linear copolymer resided within the interstitial regions of a rigid (∼1 GPa) copolymer brush particle template with disordered hyperuniform microstructure. Diffusion of the self-healing copolymer additive into damage regions drove the recovery after damage, along with the restoration of structural color due to the materials hyperuniform microstructure. The synergistic action of intrinsic and extrinsic healing mechanisms could provide a versatile platform for the bottom-up fabrication of multifunctional hybrid materials with increased damage resistance and functional longevity.
The disclosure relates to a method for forming a low refractive index layer on a substrate. The method generally includes (a) applying a block copolymer layer on a substrate, the block copolymer including a polar polymeric block and a non-polar polymeric block; (b) swelling the block copolymer layer with a solvent to increase the block copolymer layer thickness; (c) depositing a metal oxide or metalloid oxide layer on polar polymeric blocks of the block copolymer layer; and (d) removing the block copolymer layer from the substrate, thereby forming a porous metal oxide or metalloid oxide layer on the substrate.
The present paper describes the design and evaluation of novel hydrophilic–hydrophobic poly(arylene ether sulfone) (PAES) multiblock copolymers for their synergistic effects upon transport properties and their potential use in proton exchange membrane water electrolysis. The multiblock copolymers are prepared via a coupling reaction between (i) a hydrophilic segment consisting of a disulfonated quinone fluorinated biphenyl group that contains fluorine moieties next to the sulfonated groups to increase the acidity, and (ii) hydrophobic segments composed of non-sulfonated biphenyl sulfone to provide dimensional stability. Two different lengths (molecular weights; 5k and 10k, where k represents 10 3 g mol -1 ) of hydrophobic segments are used to investigate the effects of the membrane properties compared with those of Nafion® and PAES random copolymer (i.e., BPSH40). Atomic force microscopy images of the BPSH40 and multiblock membranes are shown to agree closely with a mesoscale simulation, thus confirming the importance of the morphological effect upon the transport properties. Furthermore, the multiblock copolymer with a higher proportion of hydrophilic segments (10 k–5k) was shown to provide enhanced performance (3.41 A cm -2 at 1.9 V) compared to the multiblock copolymer with equal proportions of hydrophilic and hydrophobic segments (10 k–10 k) due to the greater continuity of nano-sized ionic channels.
