Cassini Camera Contamination Anomaly: Experiences and Lessons Learned

We discuss the contamination 'Haze' anomaly for the Cassini Narrow Angle Camera (NAC), one of two optical telescopes that comprise the Imaging Science Subsystem (ISS). Cassini is a Saturn Orbiter with a 4-year nominal mission. The incident occurred in 2001, five months after Jupiter encounter during the Cruise phase and ironically at the resumption of planned maintenance decontamination cycles. The degraded optical performance was first identified by the Instrument Operations Team with the first ISS Saturn imaging six weeks later. A distinct haze of varying size from image to image marred the images of Saturn. A photometric star calibration of the Pleiades, 4 days after the incident, showed stars with halos. Analysis showed that while the halo's intensity was only 1 - 2% of the intensity of the central peak of a star, the halo contained 30 - 70% of its integrated flux. This condition would impact science return. In a review of our experiences, we examine the contamination control plan, discuss the analysis of the limited data available and describe the one-year campaign to remove the haze from the camera. After several long conservative heating activities and interim analysis of their results, the contamination problem as measured by the camera's point spread function was essentially back to preanomaly size and at a point where there would be more risk to continue. We stress the importance of the flexibility of operations and instrument design, the need to do early infight instrument calibration and continual monitoring of instrument performance.

Invited: uPSP Launch Vehicle Demonstration Test at NASA Ames Research Center

The Unsteady Pressure-Sensitive Paint (uPSP) Development Team outof NASA Ames Research Center (ARC) has spent the past five yearsimproving the systems and processes to advance the uPSP technology for production-level wind tunnel testing. Already considered turnkey for small-scale and research applications, development in acquisition, calibration, data transfer, and data processing were needed to be useful to customers testing at NASA wind tunnels. This development focused at ARC at the Unitary Plan Wind Tunnel (UPWT) 11-by 11-ft Transonic Wind Tunnel due to the large optical access of the test section and the NASA Advanced Supercomputer(NAS), also located at ARC. A Launch Vehicle Demonstration Test (LVDT) at the UPWT represents a milestone of this initial phase of development where several new improvements were demonstrated in a production wind tunnel environment for the first time. LVDT was conducted in April 2024 and used a 4% forebody Space Launch System (SLS) Block 1B model as the test article. Both a crew and cargo configuration were tested, with varying Mach numbers, pressures, model positions, and camera magnifications. This paper summarizes the details of the test and is part of a collection with four additional papers that provide greater detail on: high-speed lifetime methodology, spectral proper orthogonal decomposition analysis, quality of high-resolution data compared to Corcos model, and data quality, calibration, and uncertainty.

Noise Reduction and Calibration for Aeroacoustic Loads from Unsteady Pressure-Sensitive Paint

Unsteady pressure-sensitive paint (uPSP) is a significant new technology for high spatial resolution measurement of complex dynamic surface pressure loading on a wind tunnel model, to better define flight vehicle buffet and aeroacoustic loads. Compared with the very sparse surface pressure measurements of traditional sensors, the pressure sensitivity of uPSP light reflectivity provides a visual measure of surface pressure fluctuations over a wide area illuminated by high intensity light, captured by a high-speed digital camera. Panda et al (AIAA Journal, May 2019) have shown good data is recoverable up to 10 kHz. In cases where available uPSP luminescence is low for a painted wind tunnel test model, significant noise levels have been observed primarily due to the discrete photon arrival variability of low intensity light (termed “shot noise”). In this case, uPSP measurements can exhibit unusually low signal to noise ratio (SNR of 0.1 or less). This paper will report on latest work to recover calibrated uPSP measurements which are noise free over a useful dynamic range of 10-15 dB. It will be shown how the distinct spatial correlations of both the shot noise and the underlying aeroacoustic surface pressure play an important role in obtaining a reliable measurement.

Redshifts of high-temperature emission lines in the far-ultraviolet spectra of late-type stars. II - New, precise measurements of dwarfs and giants

Results are presented from an IUE SWP camera investigation of the occurrence of gasdynamic flows, analogous to the downdrafts of 10 to the 5th K material observed over magnetic active regions of the sun, among stars of late spectral type. The SWP calibration spectra study conducted documents the existence of local, small, persistent distortions of the echelle wavelength scales that are of unknown origin. Attention is given to the enormous widths of the stellar high-excitation emission lines in both the dwarfs and the giants, with respect to the comparatively small, subsonic Doppler shifts; the widths are typically an order of magnitude greater than the redshifts.

Method for measuring surface shear stress magnitude and direction using liquid crystal coatings

A method is provided for determining surface shear magnitude and direction at every point on a surface. The surface is covered with a shear stress sensitive liquid crystal coating and illuminated by white light from a normal direction. A video camera is positioned at an oblique angle above the surface to observe the color of the liquid crystal at that angle. The shear magnitude and direction are derived from the color information. A method of calibrating the device is also provided.

MRO High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment (HiRISE): Instrument Development

The primary functional requirement of the HiRISE imager is to allow identification of both predicted and unknown features on the surface of Mars to a much finer resolution and contrast than previously possible. This results in a camera with a very wide swath width, 6km at 300km altitude, and a high signal to noise ratio, >100:1. Generation of terrain maps, 30 cm vertical resolution, from stereo images requires very accurate geometric calibration. The project limitations of mass, cost and schedule make the development challenging. In addition, the spacecraft stability must not be a major limitation to image quality. The nominal orbit for the science phase of the mission is a 3pm orbit of 255 by 320 km with periapsis locked to the south pole. The track velocity is approximately 3,400 m/s.

NICMOS Calibration Challenges in the Ultra Deep Field

The reduction of NICMOS observations in the Hubble Ultra Deep Field required unique reduction and calibration techniques, not required for images containing brighter sources. This paper describes some of these techniques which may be useful in the reduction of other fields containing extremely faint sources. These techniques apply to NICMOS camera 3 which was the only NICMOS camera utilized in the observations. The absolute accuracy of the NICMOS camera 3 photometry was also investigated using the observations of the solar analog star P330-E. As a result the sensitivity of the camera in the F110W and F160W was found to be less than the sensitivities used in the construction of the Version 2.0 NICMOS Treasury catalog for the observations in the Hubble Ultra Deep Field. The catalog fluxes are too low by between 8 and 9%.

Legacy Survey of Space and Time Data Preview 1

The Legacy Survey of Space and Time Data Preview 1 (DP1) is the first release of data from the NSF-DOE Vera C. Rubin Observatory. It consists of raw and calibrated single-epoch images, co-adds, difference images, detection catalogs, and other derived data products. DP1 is based on 1792 science-grade optical/near-infrared exposures acquired over 48 distinct nights by the Rubin Commissioning Camera, LSSTComCam, on the Simonyi Survey Telescope at the Summit Facility on Cerro Pachón, Chile during the first on-sky commissioning campaign in late 2024. DP1 covers a total of approximately 15 sq. deg. over seven roughly equally-sized non-contiguous fields, each independently observed in six broad photometric bands, ugrizy, spanning a range of stellar densities and latitudes and overlapping with external reference datasets.
