Measurement of the degree of anisotropy of the cosmic radiation using the IMP space vehicle

The detector and data reduction techniques used in connection with the cosmic ray experiments designed for and flown on Explorer 34 and 41 satellites are described. A history of the program development and the present status of data processing are briefly summarized. The instrument to measure the anisotropy and energy spectra of cosmic ray electrons and protons, and X-rays of solar and galactic origin is discussed. The main characteristics of the detectors and the stability during 23 months of operation are described. The method of analysis of the angular distribution of solar cosmic ray particles in the ecliptic plane is given. It is shown that the anisotropy of low energy particles of solar origin decreases sharply to a very small value when the satellite penetrates the magnetosphere.

Compositional variations in lunar spinels.

Electron probe data for spinels from Apollo 11, 12, and 14 are presented and analyzed. A modified Johnstone spinel prism showing the data distribution is given. Three projections of this prism are then presented which illustrate the variations of simple ratios that are present in the prism and permit three different perspectives of the data. The results are summarized as fO2 isobars on the spinel prism.

Relative motion of orbiting particles under the influence of perturbing forces. Volume 2: Analytical results

The mathematical developments carried out for this investigation are reported. In addition to describing and discussing the solutions which were acquired, there are compendia of data presented herein which summarize the equations and describe them as representative trace geometries. In this analysis the relative motion problems have been referred to two particular frames of reference; one which is inertially aligned, and one which is (local) horizon oriented. In addition to obtaining the classical initial values solutions, there are results which describe cases having applied specific forces serving as forcing functions. Also, in order to provide a complete state representation the speed components, as well as the displacements, have been described. These coordinates are traced on representative planes analogous to the displacement geometries. By this procedure a complete description of a relative motion is developed; and, as a consequence range rate as well as range information is obtained.

U-Th-Pb systematics on lunar rocks and inferences about lunar evolution and the age of the moon

The investigation reported continues a study conducted by Tera et al. (1974). An attempt is made to summarize all of the data currently available in the literature on terra materials and to discuss the implications of the upper intersection with the concordia curve. Data on total rocks and some plagioclase separates are presented in a graph. The data appear to give further support to a model of a terminal lunar cataclysm associated with intense global bombardment at about 3.9 aeons.

NASA teleconference pilot project evaluation for 1975

Tabular data were given to summarize the results of the NASA teleconferencing network pilot project for 1975. The 1,241 evaluation reports received indicate that almost 100,000 man-hours of teleconferences took place. The travel funds reported saved total about $1.44 million, which is about 10% of the NASA travel costs. Subtracting the cost of providing the teleconferencing networks, the net savings reported are $1.28 million (about 9% of the travel costs). The teleconferencing network has proved to be successful in conducting many management meetings and reviews within NASA and its contractors. In spite of difficulties caused by inexperience in teleconferencing and some equipment and circuit problems, the evaluation reports indicated the system was satisfactory in an overwhelming majority of cases.

Study of T53 engine vibration

Vibration characteristics for overhauled T53 engines, including rejection rate, principal sources of vibration, and normal procedures taken by the overhaul center to reduce engine vibration are summarized. Analytical and experimental data were compared to determine the engine's dynamic response to unbalance forces with results showing that the engine operates through bending critical speeds. Present rigid rotor balancing techniques are incapable of compensating for the flexible rotor unbalance. A comparison of typical test cell and aircraft vibration levels disclosed significant differences in the engine's dynamic response. A probable spline shift phenomenon was uncovered and investigated. Action items to control costs and reduce vibration levels were identified from analytical and experimental studies.

Comparison of ozone concentrations obtained from Skylab eclipse and ozonesonde measurements

The satellite eclipse technique of ozone measurement is evaluated to determine its accuracy and resolution. The method of obtaining ozone concentrations from ground-based observations of eclipsing satellites is described, the theory of this method is outlined, and the data reduction procedure is summarized. It is shown that the satellite eclipse technique successfully measures the vertical distribution of ozone from 15 to 40 km with precisions ranging from + or - 12% between 20 and 35 km and + or - 25% at both 15 and 40 km. The ozone profile is found to be in good agreement with in situ measurements obtained from an ozonesonde launched near the eclipse tangent point at local sunset, the percent differences being less than 14% from 20 to 40 km.

Demand and supply of hydrogen as chemical feedstock in USA

Projections are made for the demand and supply of hydrogen as chemical feedstock in USA. Industrial sectors considered are petroleum refining, ammonia synthesis, methanol production, isocyanate manufacture, edible oil processing, coal liquefaction, fuel cell electricity generation, and direct iron reduction. Presently, almost all the hydrogen required is produced by reforming of natural gas or petroleum fractions. Specific needs and emphases are recommended for future research and development to produce hydrogen from other sources to meet the requirements of these industrial sectors. The data and the recommendations summarized in this paper are based on the Workshop 'Supply and Demand of Hydrogen as Chemical Feedstock' held at the University of Houston on December 12-14, 1977.

Tropospheric CO measurement experiment from the second Space Shuttle flight

The MAPS experiment was designed to remotely measure the mixing ratio of carbon monoxide in the middle and upper troposphere using a gas filter radiometer as the sensing instrument. The asymmetrical worldwide distribution of CO is discussed as background, and the experimental scientific and technical objectives are briefly stated. The gas filter radiometer is described in detail, and the second Shuttle mission is summarized. Auxiliary and correlative data were obtained in order to evaluate the performance of the measurement system, to assess the effect of stratospheric ozone on the radiometer signals, and to determine the effect of the underlying surface. The experiment acquired about 32 hours of data between 38 deg N and 38 deg S, signal-to-noise ratios were as predicted and the instrument achieved satisfactory stability in spite of large temperature variations. Data reduction is in progress.
