Distributed-Flap Layout Trade Study on a Highly Flexible Common Research Model

The results of a layout trade study of a full-span, trailing-edge flap system for the NASACommon Research Model (CRM) are presented. Previously developed analysis and design tools areused to determine the potential performance benefits of several flap layouts on a highlyflexible version of the aircraft wing. The wing is first re-twisted for optimal aerodynamicperformance at the design cruise condition while addressing aeroelastic effects. Several flaplayouts are then installed on the new baseline wing. The deflection of each segment on allflap layouts is then optimized for aerodynamic performance at an overspeed flight conditionto ascertain the effectiveness of each flap system. The results indicate that employing two-segmentflaps greatly improves overspeed performance as compared to using no or justsingle-segment flaps. The study also showed that additional segments offer only incrementalimprovements in performance. The results also show that using only four spanwise flaps canproduce meaningful performance gains. Overall, the trade study results suggest a simpledistributed flap system (four spanwise flaps with two segments each) can reduce the drag ofthe Common Research Model by 13 counts at a Mach number that is 3.5 percent higher than thedesign cruise point.

Space tools and support equipment - Current technology and future requirements.

Space tools and supporting equipment developed for past and current missions are summarized, along with projected tool and powered maneuvering aid requirements for future earth orbital missions. These tools, designed for functions such as general maintenance, replacement and repair, are reviewed and classified according to their intended application. A synopsis of the Skylab on-orbit maintenance requirements is presented, and the tools necessary for accomplishing the maintenance functions are listed. The proposed missions for future Earth Orbital Systems are summarized, and the potential functions (e.g., Remove/Replace, Cargo Transfer, etc.) are outlined. The current tool and support technology status is compared with future requirements for crew equipment to determine if these future requirements can be adequately satisfied. Of particular interest is a discussion of the augmentation of the astronaut with teleoperators (remote manipulator systems).

Probabilistic Unsteady Aerodynamic Analysis

Probabilistic CFD design is needed because we are asked to do more with less. To cost effectively accomplish the design task, we need to formally quantify the effect of uncertainties (variables) in the design. Probabilistic design is one effective method to formally quantify the effect of uncertainties. Our objective is to establish a revolutionary new early design process, by developing non-deterministic physics-based probabilistic design tools, which will include all the life cycle processes. This work was concerned with the usefulness of parametric optimization method coupled with a Navier-Stokes analysis code for the aero-thermodynamic design of turbomachinery combustor liner. The interconnection between the CFD code and NESSUS codes will facilitate the coupling between the thermal profiles and structural design. We have developed new concepts for reducing the computational cost of unsteady, three-dimensional, compressible aerodynamic analyses for multistage turbomachinery flows. The flow was modeled by the three-dimensional Favre-Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations using the k-E turbulence closure, which was integrated using an implicit third-order upwind solver. The methodology developed in this work is expected to lead to the design optimization of turbomachinery blades.

Additively Manufactured Low Cost Upper Stage Combustion Chamber

Over the past two years NASA's Low Cost Upper Stage Propulsion (LCUSP) project has developed Additive Manufacturing (AM) technologies and design tools aimed at reducing the costs and manufacturing time of regeneratively cooled rocket engine components. High pressure/high temperature combustion chambers and nozzles must be regeneratively cooled to survive their operating environment, causing their design fabrication to be costly and time consuming due to the number of individual steps and different processes required. Under LCUSP, AM technologies in Sintered Laser Melting (SLM) GRCop-84 and Electron Beam Freeform Fabrication (EBF3) Inconel 625 have been significantly advanced, allowing the team to successfully fabricate a 25k-class regenerative chamber. Estimates of the costs and schedule of future builds indicate cost reductions and significant schedule reductions will be enabled by this technology. Characterization of the microstructural and mechanical properties of the SLM-produced GRCop-84, EBF3 Inconel 625 and the interface layer between the two has been performed and indicates the properties will meet the design requirements. The LCUSP chamber is to be tested with a previously demonstrated SLM injector in order to advance the Technology Readiness Level (TRL) and demonstrate the capability of the application of these processes. NASA is advancing these technologies to reduce cost and schedule for future engine applications and commercial needs.
