Structural origin of recovered ferroelectricity in BaTi O 3 nanoparticles

Nanoscale BaTiO 3 particles (≈10 nm) prepared by ball-milling a mixture of oleic acid and heptane have been reported to have an electric polarization several times larger than that for bulk BaTiO 3 . In this work, detailed local, intermediate, and long-range structural studies are combined with spectroscopic measurements to develop a model structure of these materials. The X-ray spectroscopic measurements reveal large Ti off-centering as the key factor producing the large spontaneous polarization in the nanoparticles. Temperature-dependent lattice parameter changes reveal the sharpening of the structural phase transitions in these BaTiO 3 nanoparticles compared to the pure nanoparticle systems. In conclusion, sharp crystalline-type peaks in the barium oleate Raman spectra suggest that this component in the composite core-shell matrix, a product of mechanochemical synthesis, stabilizes an enhanced polar structural phase of the BaTiO 3 core nanoparticles.

Helimagnetism in the candidate ferroelectric CrI 2

CrI 2 is a van der Waals (vdW) layered material that exhibits helimagnetism that propagates along ribbon chains. This is determined from neutron time-of-flight diffraction measurements. Be low T N = 17 K in the orthorhombic structure, a screw-like helimagnetic order develops with an incommensurate wavevector of q ≈ (0.2492, 0, 0) at 8 K. Using density functional theory (DFT)+U calculations, the J 1 -J 2 model is leveraged to describe the helimagnetism, where J 1 (> 0) and J 2 (< 0) correspond, respectively, to a ferromagnetic nearest neighbor (NN) and antiferromagnetic next nearest neighbor (NNN) intrachain interaction. In conclusion, the DFT+U calculations suggest that orthorhombic CrI 2 satisfies conditions that favor formation of helimagnetic order.

Enhanced Thermal Hall Effect in Nearly Ferroelectric Insulators

In the context of recent experimental observations of an unexpectedly large thermal Hall conductivity, $κ_H$, in insulating $La_2CuO_4$ (LCO) and $SrTiO_3$ (STO), in this paper we theoretically explore conditions under which acoustic phonons can give rise to such a large $κ_H$. Both the intrinsic and extrinsic contributions to $κ_H$ are large in proportion to the dielectric constant, $ε$, and the “flexoelectric” coupling, $F$. While the intrinsic contribution is still orders of magnitude smaller than the observed effect, an extrinsic contribution proportional to the phonon mean-free path appears likely to account for the observations, at least in STO. We predict a larger intrinsic $κ_H$ in certain insulating perovskites.

Behavior of strain stripe networks in barium titanate nanocrystals on crossing its ferroelectric phase transition

Nanoscale strain networks are reported in BaTi O 3 (BTO) crystals of 300 nm size using Bragg coherent diffractive imaging. BTO nanocrystals with clear facets were chosen to identify the crystallographic directions, allowing the strain field direction and periodicity to be studied in detail. Stripes of strain were observed, which were both stable and preserved in tetragonal and cubic phases at elevated temperatures, above the tetragonal-to-cubic phase transition. A finite element analysis approach was used to simulate the domain structures inside a BTO crystal and to understand the origins of the strain stripes as piezoelectric blocks. A 180 ∘ domain model gives a better qualitative match to the experimental images. Published by the American Physical Society 2024
