Battery cell with safety layer

A battery cell comprising a composite water-responsive safety layer and/or composite water- and pH-responsive safety layer to protect against tissue damage and/or electrolysis, when the battery cell is exposed to aqueous solution or tissue, is provided. The composite water-responsive safety layer and/or composite water- and pH-responsive safety layer is adapted to change from a non-electronically conducting state to an electronically conducting state.

Multiaxis sensing system for detection of airborne molecules and radionuclides

Various technologies presented herein relate to a method and equipment for detecting both airborne radioisotope and molecular effluent gases. Multi-Axis Sensing can be conducted by utilizing a pressurized MOF sorbent, such as a scintillating Metal-Organic Frameworks (S-MOFs). These MOFs are crystalline nanoporous materials that have synthetic versatility that allow adjustment of pore size, chemical environment, and luminescence properties. A method for detecting an analyte in a fluid sample is provided that comprises: loading a sorbent with a sample fluid, wherein the sorbent comprises a MOF material; pressurizing the sample fluid to increase the fluid in the sorbent thereby making a pressurized sorbent; and detecting ionizing radiation or a chemical property of the analyte in the pressurized sorbent.

Enhanced electronic sensors

A micro-structured device that can improve sensitivity and signal-to-noise for electronic sensor materials is embedded in electrically resistive materials. The technology includes a three-dimensional embedded electrode structure and fabrication methods for making the device for electronic sensing in bulk resistive materials. Embedded electrode structures address issues in conventional sensors by allowing independent control of sensitive material thickness, area, electric field intensity, and field direction.

A comparison of plastic and visco-plastic constitutive models for accurate predictions in PM-HIP

Powder metallurgy hot isostatic pressing (PM-HIP) is an advanced manufacturing process that can efficiently produce near net shape parts with high material utilization and uniform microstructures. While the PM-HIP process is used frequently to produce small-scale components, its application to large-scale components is still limited due to inadequate understanding of its complex processes that cause unpredictable post-HIP shape distortions. A computational model can be a cost-effective alternative to exhaustive experimentation required to understand the PM-HIP process fully. Therefore, we present a comparison of plastic and visco-plastic models that are frequently used to model the PM-HIP process. We show that the predictions of powder densification behavior and shape distortions obtained from both the models are similar under most conditions and agree well with experimental observations.
