Experimental Effects of Scaling on the Performance of Ion Rockets Employing Electron-Bombardment Ion Sources

A scaling program was undertaken to establish the relations between performance parameters and the size of the electron bombardment ion source. The experimental results of this investigation are the subject of this paper. Two geometrically similar sources, a 5- and a 20-cm-diameter beam source, were scaled from a 10-cm-diameter source to allow a performance comparison to be made. The three ion sources are compared for ion chamber characteristics and overall engine efficiency. The results of the chamber investigations are compared with scaling variations indicated by simple plasma theory. The effects of size on operating limits are also discussed. Mercury was used as the propellant in this investigation.

Riddles About the Origin and Thermal History of the Moon

Analyses of lunar rocks have confirmed that the interior of the Moon has been subjected to magmatic differentiation, as has been determined by calculation of the thermal history of the Moon. However, it appears that differentiation occurred so early that it could not have been related to heating by long-lived radioactive elements, but rather indicates a high initial temperature of the Moon. The reasons for the high initial temperature remain unknown. The presence of a central, partially melted area revealed by seismic observations forces us to reject convective models of the Moon, while the dimensions of this area, together with the measured heat fluxes from the interior, serve as "boundary conditions" for any new calculations of the thermal history for a two-layered differentiated model of the Moon operative over the past 3.5 billion years. If we start with the early differentiation of the Moon and the high content of long-lived radioactive elements in it, explanation of its current thermal properties represents no difficulty. But these prerequisites themselves remain unexplained. Due to the continuing controversy concerning the true nature of the process of magmatic differentiation of the Moon, estimation of the composition of the entire Moon on the basis of analyses of surface rock remains unreliable, and use of these estimates to clarify the origin of the Moon is premature. Existing hypotheses concerning the origin of the Moon encounter dynamic difficulties, as well as difficulties with explanation of the high initial temperature, to say nothing of the difficulty involved in explaining the proposed differences in the composition of the Earth and Moon.

The works of k. e. tsiolkovskiy on rocket technology

K. E. Tsiolkovskiy devoted a rather substantial portion of his works to the problem of flight by means of various reactive devices. We may state without exaggeration that Tsiolkovskiy considered his efforts in this direction to be of prime importance. Up to the time of his death Tsiolkovskiy continuously published articles; notes_ and calculations devoted to a comprehensive analysis of the possibilities and methods of interplanetary communications.

Experimental Investigations of Low-Energy (4 to 40 eV) Collisions of O - ( 2 P) Ions and O( 3 P) Atoms With Surfaces

Using a newly-developed, magnetically confined source, low-energy, ground state oxygen negative ions and neutral atoms are generated. The energy range is variable, and atom and neutrals have been generated at energies varying from 2 eV to 40 eV and higher. It was found that the interaction of these low-energy species with a solid magnesium fluoride target leads to optical emissions in the (at least) visible and infrared regions of the spectrum. Researchers describe y details of the photodetachment source, and present spectra of the neutral and ion glows in the wavelength range 250 to 850 nm (for O - ) and 600 to 850 nm (for O), and discuss the variability of the emissions for incident energies between 4 and 40 eV.

Operational Correction for the Temperature Dependence of A Class of Hyperspectral Radiometers

The correction for temperature response of optical radiometers implies access to their working temperature (i.e., either the internal or ambient one with the radiometers in thermal equilibrium). With specific reference to a class of widely used hyperspectral radiometers lacking a thermistor to measure the internal temperature, this work investigated the potential for operational corrections relying on the ambient temperature derived from the radiometer dark digital counts. With the objective to keep within approximately 1% the uncertainty for radiometric corrections in the 400–800-nm spectral range, findings showed the applicability of the method for ambient temperatures higher than approximately 30°C. The alternative use of an ambient temperature proxy, determined from the air temperature incremented by a few degrees Celsius, was shown a valid solution to constrain the uncertainty of radiometric corrections to within 1% over the entire 0°–40°C interval.

An analysis was made of current heat flow data and thermal models of lunar evolution which satisfy the diverse information that has accumulated on internal processes.
